A good book to read to explain a hive mind that works similar to the nids is "Enders Game"
It is believed that there is a synapse link between all the tyranids, and their "thoughts" come from a being that is sitting in the void between galaxies. The bigger nids tend to have a stronger link, normaly, hence the imperial thought of "shoot the bigger ones".
Being that they gettheir directives from one mind, they move like one organism, more organised and faster than any unit with many organisms having thier own free thought.

Think of the Borg from Star Trek, then add in a much more animalistic and devious nature and you're there.

That's exactly what I was gonna say! :D Billions and Billions of creatures all connected by one animalistc, exceptionally hungry, malevolent intelligence.

Just remember: No emotions! I don't even know if the hive mind has "self-awareness" in the way we do. The Borg had a "we" metality, while the Zerg overmind had an "I" mentality, to use two famous hives intellects as an example. The Hive mind has neither. It is an animal, pure and simply; albiet very intelligent.

Think of the hivemind as your brain, it tells all the stuff in your body what to do, and it just does it how it is supposed to (according to the brain)
The 'nids species could be seen as one giant organism, each 'nid being a different organ of that organism, the brain of which is the hivemind.
