I recently came up with a list that seemed to have a very effective tactic, yet for some reason even though the rules say its legal, I want to get the forums opinion on the tactic... Have you seen it before? Was is effective?

So the idea of the tactic is to be already in the enemy's face before they even realize what's happening.

1500 Points Space Marine Drop Podding/Teleport Army

HQ (1)405 Libarian w/ Force Dome & Gate of Infinity
Attached to 10 Sternguard Veterans w/ 4 Combi-Meltas, 2 Combi-Flamers, Power Fist

HQ (2)405 Libarian w/ Force Dome & Gate of Infinity
Attached to 10 Sternguard Veterans w/ 4 Combi-Meltas, 2 Combi-Flamers, Power Fist

Troops 230 10 Tactical Marines w/ Flamer, Multi-Melta, Power Weapon
Transport: Drop Pod w/ Lacator Beacon

Troops 230 10 Tactical Marines w/ Flamer, Multi-Melta, Power Weapon
Transport: Drop Pod w/ Lacator Beacon

Troops 230 10 Tactical Marines w/ Flamer, Multi-Melta, Power Weapon
Transport: Drop Pod w/ Lacator Beacon

Total 1500

So the tactic is to use the Drop Pod assault and drop two troops on the enemy within 24' of the Sternguard Veterans so that the libarian can teleport them using the gate of infinity and not worry about scatter due to the locator beacon.

Thoughts? Should I start a cheese buffet?

Granted you're investing a tremendous number of points into a few units, but they'll do what you want them too well.

I think that a few Carnifex (who can't be melta'd to death easily) could give you some pause. There's enough ways around the list to make it not too cheesy, but it sounds fun and potentially effective.

Go for it.

T-sons march up gun you down and walk away *tips hat* good day sir

I just think you are riding on very few models

Actually, he isn't. 52 Marines at the table, not-including the Drop-Pods.
I think you should cut points on your Librarians & Sternguard so you can slide in a Vindicator for support.

hum yeah I guess im wrong he has a good number but al being 3+ save and jumping around in tight telipot formations is asking for battle cannon and plasma cannon death

The point of the army is to attack a balanced list and find it's weakness. If it is indeed T-sons, nearly 80 bolter rounds, 40 of them with special aumminition should put a large dent in a enemy's blast template or AP 3 or higher weapons. Maybe reducing the squad's size and putting another 50 points in the libarian so he could teleport and give his squad a 5+ invul save will help against any plasma cannons or similar weapons.

I think the list is a good idea, I would defiantly try it if I played SM, but I can see it turning ugly VS those AP tempalte weapons

One problem is that you only have five units which are all infantry, and none are dedicated assault. As marines, they'll hold their own, but the enemy can engage you with assault/tar pit units, letting them pull back tanks and ranged units outta range of you're heavy and special weapons. You win the combat, stand there, they blast you.

The point about the large template blast weapons is a great one, actually.

My normal IG opponent always fills the three heavy support slots with a combination of Russes and Basilisks, all of which will kill 5/6 of those Stermguard units with a hit on the targeted model.

My Tyranids would just bog down those units in CC (because they actually moved closer to me) and annihilate them pretty quickly.

My Tau opponent, however, would get one round of shooting in before you ravaged him. That would be fun. Normal marines are more than enough for Tau, plus you have enough firepower to not wasting the turn in which you drop onto the board.

it doesn't help that you need to bunch up to teleport. My mech SM army packs enough plasma cannons to take this list apart. one direct shot from a plasma cannon would kill most of the squad, in one shot...

Maybe one sternguard squad like this, combined with some more conventional stuff would do the trick. This way you would have one awesome punch, but more ordinary guys to hold the line.
