View Full Version : War Walkers Effectiveness

So I tried a 1k battle with some war walkers, I had a squadron of 3 of them with 2 scatter lasers each and they were very, very effective. I had tried it in a friendly setting with 2 opponents and we did a 3 way objective battle so that's where I wanted to ask you guys something. With 2 scatter lasers each a war walker squad of 3 costs 180 pts and that's 24 shots at strength 6. They have BS 3 so that's 4's to hit but also it has strength 6 so it can mow down infantry squads or a light vehicle such as a rhino or anything else if your other Anti-tank weapons missed or if they just weren't enough. Are war walkers worth it in a larger scale game such as 1750, also how do you use them in your lists?

I use them
they are effective to a point; but don't rely on them. being armor 10 means they are fragile so if your opponent wants to, they are easy to destroy. alternating how you deploy war walkers from match to match helps to keep your opponents from focusing their attention on them as soon as they touch the board.
i.e.
deploy and scout move as normal in one match, out-flank in another, hold them back as regular reserves etc...

They are generally better when used as a firebase - so they just stand behind some cover, in a position which gives them a fairly good arc of fire. Then they just stand there and use their 36" to out-range basic weapons such as bolters. Meaning your enemy has to dedicate some heavy weapon to them. This way they can kill stuff and either survive or just take up the enemies better weapons.

on vassal i often run a squad of 3 with Dual EML's they can tear apart squads of light infantry as they have AP4 Blasts, and can lay down anti tank just as effectively... normally i use them in a static fashion, but occasionally i will outflank them to hit big vehicles in the rear

Hmmm, so they can be a good choice in an army for anti infantry and anti tank? I might try out that EML idea myself it sounds great :D

I like using them to flank, with long enough range on thier weapons it doesn't really matter what side them come on and if you get to choose then thats just awesomer.

nothing wrong with dropping 6 str4 ap4 PINNING templaters on an unsuspecting ork horde or blasting a tank to shit using the krak variant.

I probs would prefer the scatter lasers to keep cost down but they can be very versatile and the only way to stop them shooting is by blowing them up or taking them apart a weapon at a time. All we need now is some av14 walkers and we will be laughing ;)

I use my single walker cheap, with any fairly long range weapons (ie not Shuricannons). It is very good at annoying enemies, because of its impressive weaponry and tendency to lurk at long range so it gets shot a lot, protecting more important units that cost more.
It also dies very rarely, because I never let opponents into range to use things like melta/close combat, which merely makes the enemies waste more of their precious long range firepower.
And if it dies, no problem, it costs very little.

I would reccomend war walkers only as fire support platforms or counter charge units.

Perfect advice.

A slightly more deadly combo is a farseer with guide and fortune. 4+ cover save and twin-linked weapons on vehicles? lol Pure Eldar.
