Hello, I have a guard and space marines army, and was thinking of an eldar army.
When i first started the game i didn't want them becuase eldar are harder to play with than marines (i have only recently started guard) and because i liked the emporor's finest more.
I was wondering whether the eldar units could out-shoot/fight other armies if they were played right. Mainly because i've been playing a lot of DOW2 and sorta got the hang of it.
My friend has given me a battleforce, and I've read in a lot of places that I'll need to buy another one, but what should i get after that

A farseer. Its the central figure in most eldar armies. Also, you cant really change his wargear that much, its changing his psychic powers that can alter the way your whole army plays. It means its somthing you can change from game to game adn still keep it wysiwyg.
Fire dragons. Fire dragons are so rocking awsome i couldnt imagine an eldar force without them.

The only problem I have with Farseers is that they are never any different from the next one - it's always DOOOOOOOOOOOM and GUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE. The other powers may as well not exist.

Depnds really, through my time playing Eldar i have used a few differeent Farseer configs... i used to have the old Doom and Guide combo but in my new force i use guide and Fortune to boost both the Survivablility and Combat Effectiveness for Pathfinders... and 1 plan i have in the future is to take a 4 man warlock squad with 2 seers, one armed with Doom and Eldritch Storm and the othe riwth Fortune and Mind war, these guys jump out of a Falcon and rape any squad it touches...

Doom+Fortune+Banshee squad=raped enemy unit, especially with new rules for counter attack.
Guide and doom are also kick ass (makes bladestorm even more scary) but mind war is only fun for occasional popping of heads and storm is too unpredictable to justify its points, I only ever use them when I'm taking eldrad otherwise its fortune and doom for me

Eldritch storm isnt that unpredictable. You usualy have your forces spead pretty far, combined with the flat 33% chance of choosing which direction you face a tank, odds should be high that you expose rear armour to at least 1 of your units. Often, just exposing side armour can make a significant difference. Eldritch storm was my favourite eldar power in 3rd edition (because with augment it had 36" range). Its real problem is its short range. Anyone who says its too unpredictable hasnt really used it and is just assuming it is.

Well, somehow I find that the question is perhaps being answered in a round-about way? Yes, you are going to need a Farseer but overall I would say to you that YES, they are a very playable army and they can shoot and they can fight depending on the unit.
No, they are not all around beings like the Space Marines but they have specialist units that can utterly devastate an army. For your tank hunting you have Bright Lances, which reduce armor, Fire Prisms, which can be strength 10 AP1 twin linked, and probably the greatest tank busting unit in the game, Fire Dragons.
For troop slaughtering at range.. you have the Dire Avengers, which can fire like mad.. and well.. the war walkers can light things up with those multi-laser shots. S6 rocks about everything.
Up close you have Harlequins (Probably some of the coolest GW models if painted nicely), Banshees, which have mad initiative and bonuses to fighting, and then striking scorpions, which are somewhat more balanced as far as shooting and cc (I believe)
Overall I'd say that they are extremely playable, and in the right hands almost unstoppable. If you ever face a mech Eldar army (A guy at Ard Boyz had one, 6 wave serpants and 3 Prisms. Needless to say, he was good, and he decimated everyone he played, the perfect score) then you'll realize true fury if the guy knows how to play it.

There is alot wrong with that army you posted. It has 3 HQs. It has spirit stones on a war walker squadren, infact the whole weapons combo on the war walkers isnt good, they dont compliment each other. Thats just at a glance.
When you make an army you need to think how the units are going to work together.

Actually, the first thing that is wrong with that list is the point cost, which seems a little odd to me. >.>
He doesn't have three HQs, though. Avatar and Eldrad with an attached Warlock squad, just like a conventional Farseer.

Yes, he does.
Eldrad Ulthran 210
farseer + rune arm + ghelm + ROWitnessing + sprt stnes + SngSpr 163+ sprt stnes 290And you don't need to include things like ghost helms and rune armor; they are items the Farseer always has, and don't cost any points.

no just double checked you have to buy them, and the warlock is attached to eldrad, scrap the avatar

The only thing you buy on a seer is runes, powers, jetbike or spear. Things like his ghosthelm are included and you don't need to buy them

You've got four Heavy choices. Happily, one of them is worthless so you can just drop it.
