ok so ive been thinking for awhile about creating my own wargame. it probably will end up shelved with the rest of my projects, but i was wondering what sort of bases should i use?
round
square
hexagonal
ect.
also stuff like the edging
flat
rounded
beveled
ect.
the game wont be a rank-and-fie game like WHFB
any thoughts/suggestions?

It would depend on whether your intention is for the models to come into base contact with eachother, I would reckon.
Perhaps you could explain a bit more about this project of yours? That would make it a lot easier to come up with suggestions :)

I'd say round because they're more aestheticly pleasing and they work better when you move single models into B2B contact, as incubus said.

Extending ^this, I would also go for round bases, since I reckon that squares og polygon shapes aren't as easy to move around individually as round ones :) (that is if you don't lift the models from the table surface of course)

thaks guys.
ok so i want it to be a simple yet fun game with a good balance of shooting/cc.
i like the round and bevelled idea but doesnt that breach GWs copyright?

I wouldn't have thought that GW have copyrighted round 25 mm plastic shapes, but then again, with GW you never know

unfortunately they have, look under any base it will say "games workshop (c)" and then a date.

isnt that technically "damaging the image of the queen" or something?

if you're worried about 25mm round, use 30mm round. the same bases as warmachine, malifaux, and many other games these days.

If you're making small amounts just for you...you can't be sued.
If you make them differently than how GW makes them...you can't be sued.
Make them solid, or put a cruciform groove to indicate forward and such...this doesn't break any current copyrights...
