Guys,
I was an Ork player years ago and recently, thanks to sales, and ebay I am the proud owner of an unpainted Ork army. Along with my purchase I got a unit of 20 of the new Gretchin. The question is: are they worth the effort to paint?
I see the cheap, cheap points paying off in possibly 2 ways:
1. They provide cover saves to Burnaz, Nobz, etc. (possibly paying off)
2. They hold, by some miracle, some rearward objective.
What do you think?
Thanks,
Back to the green Jeff

If your a footslogging force and not using the zorg oldy but goldy Kustom Force Field, then Grotz are the meat shield for you!
I say use them as they are written to be used, Fodder.

nice and cheap to hold an objective hidden in cover while the boyz run off to hit things, seen them win many games that way.

Don't forget a runtherder can lower an enemy's attack...3 of them or even more can seriously drain an MC or walker, thus tying up units in combat.

Meatshield, plus you can use them to tie up pesky monstrous creatures/walkers!
Well worth the effort imo.

plus they are just hands down awesome fluff wise.
I plan to build up a grot army..but it's hard to win with them in the age of tanks...so be prepared to fill the gaps

^^ I've been in this situation, my generic summoned greater daemon arrived from reserve but i've inaccurately guessed how far a squad of gretchin was and failed to assault, next round 30 happy grots accompagnied by 3 runtherds charge my GD and allmost managed to kill it (took 3 wounds out of 4) next round i made 3 4+ saves and killed 2 making them lose combat, failed ld, failed a reroll and they ran of the table but it would have been hilaric if they managed to kill my big dude.
I haven't used my gretchin yet with my ork armie besides as crew for my big gunz battery wich i find an excellent alternative if you don't go dreadmob or battlewagon heavy with your heavy support choices.

they are an excellent meatshield especially if you cybork them and their runtherd however do keep in mind they are not "weedy enough for a proper Waagh"
excellent for cover but remember in shooting at your oppenent if they are between your opponent and the shooting forces they are just as much as a cover for your shooting forces as they are for your opponents models

Remember that there aren't that many armies with a 4+ or worse armour save. When the most common armies out there are some variation or another of the Space Marines, giving your opponent a cover save doesn't usually help them.

Oh my god I LOVE THE FIFTH ELEMENT!!!!!
Gary Oldman really is quite... one of those rare amazing actors that never breaks into hollywood (probably by choice)
and I <3 grots, anything that costs practically no points that you can give cover saves to is fantastic.

true and some weapons ignore armour just like some ignore cover saves it's all on how you want to play and your tactics involving whom you are playing

Y'know when grits are in the forcefield, what does that make their save?

Wow...
No one even had fun with this one?
Battlewagon - 4 Rokkit Launchas, Kannon, Deff Rolla, 'Ard Case, Armour Plates
10 Gretchin+Runtherd. (19+1 if you wanna spare the points, I generally never did.)
Grots go inside the wagon.
So we got a 5 Str 8 Shot Gunwagon (BS 2, but still 5 Str 8 is at least decent even with that horrid BS 2.)
Made the thing live a bit longer with no-longer being Open-Topped. (Doesn't save you vs. Melta/Railguns but hey, try killing those first Mork/Gork help you!)
Got a Deff Rolla so if it wants, it can go with the rest of your Battlewagon Brigade and help try to get shots off of other Wagons. (Honestly who's gonna shoot at the Grot Wagon, though?)
And we got a AV 14 Scoring vehicle that has some utility support.

The Kustom Force Field gives the Grots a 5+ cover save. If they go to ground within range of the KFF, they get a 4+ cover. Best bet is to put them on or near an objective in cover and have them go to ground for the 3+ cover save.
