i think you're a bit mixed-up on how the platoon system works... an infantry platoon consists of;
1 command squad (junior officer + 4 guardsmen)
2-5 infantry squads (1 sergeant + 9 guardsmen/each)

also, a squad can only take 0-1 special weapon... (so you can choose only 1 flamer/grenade launcher/plasma gun/meltagun.) you may not take a grenade launcher if you already have flamer!

taking a demolisher at 500pts will not earn you any friends!!!

re-read your codex 2-3 times. it helps as the guard has a unique and sometimes confusing organisation...

cheers!

Yes as experiment said..

plus: I think at 500pts its best to just focus on building the core units of your army. HQ and 2 troop choices. Now small point games for IG can be tricky if you are sticking with the FoC which is often the case, (hey IG werent really designed for small battles) because the platoons take up a few points when kitted out.though it can be done.

worry bout taking tanks later on when you get over 750 at least

Problem is, when you buy the Cadian Battle force box, you get a tank. So not much I can do but add the tank to my small skirmishes.

No but then you have to buy a command squad for the platoon still

drop the demolisher for bigger battles and get yourself some conscripts lead by a commisar so they dont run. Us e them like you should use imperial gaurd. Make your enemy quake in fear as you put 50 conscripts out in front of them for the same cost as that demolisher!!!! use them as a meat sheild to cover your more vital squads. Ussually doesn't fail when u do it right.
