View Full Version : Can you defeat Pox? just CJB left now...
Pox
4th February 2011, 10:17
Pox is loose from his swamp and seeking to destroy the forums and only 7 brave forumites stand any chance of stopping him. Could it be you?
game mechanic works just like old style D&D books, and you can see the beta test in operation: http://www.40kforums.com/vb/showthread.php/27267-Pox-s-Swampp-challenge-Beta-testa-Drakon-eaten-by-spiders
basic rules:
there are seven players maximum, once the first player either kills Pox or is dead themself then the next player gets to start and see if they can do better (might be a good idea to see where the other person went wrong.)
the three stats for the game will be:
Fight value: 6+D6
Health: 2D6+12
Pure Luck: D6+6
combat is your fight value +2D6 against the opponent's fight value +2D6 - looser drops by 2 health - continue till something dies.
you have a sword, some leather armour, 5 meals worth of food and can call upon the mods 9 times to help you during the game (Except in a battle unless prompted.) the mods can also restore your fight value back to full once per game OR your luck to it's full value +1. Eating a meal restores 4 health, if you collect fuel and cook your food you may heal an extra 2 health on top as well.
Their are seven champions of Pox and make a note of when you kill one.
that's it try not to die too quickly - oh and if you don't post at least once in 24 hours you charecter is found by the Pox assassin and you die and the next player starts their quest.
so sign ups (once you are signed up it is up to you to sort out what order you want to play.)
1. Baragash - run to exhaustion fleeing from a horde of orcs then shot with a siege crossbow.
2. Pyro - crushed by a giant iron slab
3. Drakon - lost his footing on a stone bridge and fell to his death
4. CJB
5. Beeva - killed by falling rocks
6. Sneggy - Eaten alive by a beast of nurgle.
7. Doohicky - Devoured by a horde of nurglings
good luck.

indeed ye can bara.

I'm in. I was keeping a keen eye on the BETA test :P
So just to clarify, we each play through one at a time until we die, and then the next player steps in, yes?
For example, Bara goes first and goes through his quest over 4 days until he's gobbled up. Then the next player, say Drakon then begins his quest through the next 7 days until he's decapitated. Then the next player...so on and so forth?

that is the idea at present, but if that runs too SLOW then i might change it to everyone at once. I will ponder but that will be quite hard to keep track of.

Yep that seems to be it, Pyro.
I AM BACK! DEATH TO THE SPIDERS!

4th February 2011, 12:18
umm three players already - well since the game is staggered I have plenty of time to get more players if any of you three are feeling brave enough to be the first to try and banish Pox.

not a problem you can watch someone else die whilst you wait your turn to take on the Pox. suppose I should mention it, that I roll for the initial stats (not that i don't trust you lot....)
PyroSikTh
4th February 2011, 12:51
Do we only get one go? :P
Xarboth
4th February 2011, 12:52
I'll give this a go, please Pox.
Pox
4th February 2011, 12:55
Xarboth is in and Pyro to answer your question yes you only get 1 go. If you die that is it (though others may learn from your mistakes/success) if in total someone in this lot stops me and kills my champions then i lose, if you lot all die then i win and we go to challenge 2 set in a different realm/story setting so as not give you lot infinite chances to complete 1 storyline or you would always win given enough time.
EDIT: if i get to seven players before anyone decides to go first then i will randomly allocate you up.

4th February 2011, 13:06
I can go first if you want as I have net access for 3-4 hours now, late this evening and am basically at home all weekend :)

Go Baragash!!!
Pox
4th February 2011, 13:17
lol - i'm actually away for the weekend and a couple of days after that - but we can start the game certainly. I will be posting inbetween doing jobs around the house so might not be quite as quick as was with Drakon.
Well with a challenger ready to go, lets see if the devils gamer can outplay the devious Poxy.
"A huge earthquake rips through the forum and a mighty chasm appears filled with a rather noxious smell, something devious is underfoot *pun intended* and Baragash is called by Andy to discover that the mystical firewall that kept Pox in place has been stolen and he has moved from his swamp to the mighty chasm where he is working to bring down the entire forum. Armed with some provisions, leather armour and a magic sword Andy wishes you well before doing dreadfully important mod stuff. he calls back "oh yeah watch out for the traitor whom stole the firewall they will surely not be pleased if...sorry when you return." you descent into the chasm and find three paths ahead of you:
1. the left path
2. the narrow middle path
3. the larger right path
(Baras stats - VERY good fighter and DAMNED lucky but not a lot of health there bara...)
Fight:12
Health: 16
Luck: 12
Baragash
4th February 2011, 13:23
Lol, actually health is the least important in most of the books..... *suspects that won't be true here*
2. the narrow middle path
Pox
4th February 2011, 13:30
yeah who needs health
Bara you make your way skillfully across the narrow path until you enter a cavern covered in skins and sharp tools, their is a small metal trap which seems to have caught a rabbit and some firewood neatly stacked in the corner (add 2 provisions for the rabbit and 2 fuel for the wood) you decide to leave by the only other exit and as you carry on you hear a piercing shriek behind you and begin to run only to find yourself in front of a chasm crossed only by a narrow stone bridge - across the other side is an evil looking elf what do you do?
try to cross the chasm?
or wait for your pursuer?
Baragash
4th February 2011, 13:36
yeah who needs health
Well most of the damage comes from CC or traps (test luck to avoid) and it's much better just to avoid the damage to begin with!
or wait for your pursuer?
*gulps*
Pox
4th February 2011, 13:43
the running sounds get closer and closer along with a deep growl reverberating throught the tunnel - you ready yourself for trouble and a nurgling comes running out the tunnel towards you - seeing your sword it's eyes widen and it curls up into a ball and rolls back to where it came from, as you turn to face the evil looking elf you are smacked across the back of the head and fall into unconsciousness....
you wake up in a creaking cart, all tied up with a dwarfs foot sticking in your face. There are four other bundles in the cart, two orcs grumbling driving it and a group of trolls behind. your magical sword is stuck in a barrel near the orcs and begins to vibrate and try to get towards you. do you.
want to escape now or
wait and prepare yourself?

the Cart eventually comes to a stop in front of a river of lava, there are two rows of three square blocks raised above the lava - the Bile Trolls begin to take up places chanting from deep ingrained memory: "Black on the right, one across left, one diagonal left." you are carried across and into a village and dumped into a small room where slops is thrown on the floor for you to eat. The orks return and take away most of the other prisoners clamping iron collars onto their necks, leaving just you and a woman of dark looks whom asks who you are.
do you tell her or
keep silent?
Baragash
4th February 2011, 13:57
do you tell her
*unimportant text filler*
Pox
4th February 2011, 14:05
you confide in the woman your quest to retrieve the missing firewall and return Pox back to his swamp as you do so she starts to smile and long fangs sprout from her mouth dripping venom and she swipes at your with a clawed hand as you realise she is indeed one of Pox's champions! even unarmed she is quite dangerous but Bara is a man of might and power and smashes her head in with a rock from the floor even though his own cuts start to bleed (you lose 4 stamina in that fight and have slain Churka) you run out of the hut and which way do you flee?
left
right
straight on
(damn you Bara that is 1 champion down already!)
Baragash
4th February 2011, 14:13
Damn, I almost talked myself into expecting that :(

you run left and nearly stumble into a horde of ork crossbowment that take aim even as you change direction and luckily none of the bolts manage to hit you (1 luck point used up.) and you find back outside the hut where moments ago you killed Churka - where now Bara man?
go straight on or
turn left.
Baragash
4th February 2011, 14:23
I'm confused by left still being an option, or is it a "mirror" cos I'm coming back from the original left?

I'm confused by left still being an option, or is it a "mirror" cos I'm coming back from the original left?
yeah it is now a new left as you are approaching it from a different way - but to avoid further confusion going to use the original facing.
right or straight on.

you find yourself in another stone hut full of weapons spying your sword you make a dash for it even as an ork throws a spear in your direction that misses by a hairs breadth (deduct 1 luck) grabbing your sword you leg it out the hut to find a bile troll blocking your way!
do you try to fight it or
run away?
Baragash
4th February 2011, 14:49
do you try to fight it
*attempts to look fearsome*
Pox
4th February 2011, 14:54
Bara gaining his sword back is a blur of death cutting the Trolls head off in one fell swoop, then legs it for the lava river which is in fact a moat and tries to recall the song the trolls sang in an effort to get out safely.
left stone?
right stone?
or centre stone?

damn you Bara and your sticky note of power!
you make it across the lava moat successfully but a horde of orks are after you and shooting black barbed arrows in your exhaustion you run until you are exhausted (deduct 2 stamina) you stumble across a hole in the ground do you:
try to hide in the hole or
carry on running?
Baragash
4th February 2011, 15:15
My thinking is this: if the hole does something, it's the right option.... if it's just a hole then the Orcs get to play the hokey-cokey with me.......
carry on running?
Pox
4th February 2011, 15:20
Bara keeps running his legs turning to lead weights until he comes face to face with a dead end turning he spies the orcs behind him and amongst their number is something that stands head and shoulders above them, weilding a mighty siege crossbow the mighty champion of Pox takes aim and impales the moderator to the cavern wall whilst he sends in his minions to finish him off.
Ok 1 down - 6 people left, whose next to try their luck?

Well with a challenger ready to go, lets see if pyro can burn all my plans to the ground.
"A huge earthquake rips through the forum and a mighty chasm appears filled with a rather noxious smell, something devious is underfoot *pun intended* and Pyro is called by Andy to discover that the mystical firewall that kept Pox in place has been stolen and he has moved from his swamp to the mighty chasm where he is working to bring down the entire forum. 1. the left path
See if I have better luck going in a different direction :P
Pox
4th February 2011, 21:35
The left tunnel has tracks set into the stone and seems to have been used for hand carts and is well worn, eventually you break into a larger cavern do you want to go:
left or
right?
PyroSikTh
4th February 2011, 21:36
Right please :D
Pox
4th February 2011, 21:38
you walk along the tunnel for a long time then kick something with your feet that makes a metallic sound, using the light of your magic sword given to ye by Andeh you find a metal collar with strange runes inscribed on it. It is hinged and open do you...
try it on or
inspect it further?
PyroSikTh
4th February 2011, 21:40
I'm not stupid, I'll inspect it a bit more
...yeah, inspect it....
Pox
4th February 2011, 21:52
as you inspect the collar three plaguebearers come down the tunnel towards you, luckily you are in a defensive niche so they can only attack you one at a time, they are tough opponents and you slay two of them eventually whilst the third grabs the collar out of your hands and runs off with it. (you lose 10 health in the fight) you decide to eat 1 of your provisions and heal 4 stamina before carrying on your way. You come across a weird claw in the dirt and as you examine it another appears and a evil looking creature jumps at you! you beat back at it but the fast critter claws at your face, eyes, and throat and though you run it through with your sword you are beaten and bruised (down to 5 health) you stagger down the corridor in a haze and come across the fabled Pox Bar! as you do a large figure in a black cloak stumbles out and falls flat on his face.
do you help him out
or prefer to keep a low profile?
PyroSikTh
4th February 2011, 21:55
I'll keep a low profile. If I can go undetected, I can find an easier way to manage it without losing much health. If I help the guy out, it might backfire and he could finish me off :(
Pox
4th February 2011, 21:58
you loiter behind a rock and just then a bile troll comes out and the inn to pick the other figure up that is obviously another bile troll whom slashes wildly at his friend with a wicked blade whom promptly punches him in the face and carries him off. You decide to enter the fabled Pox Bar but find youself in a little alcove, a small chaos dwarf comes out of one room gnawing on a bone, seeing you he spits on the floor and then goes through a different door. you catch a glimspe of a roaring fire as he closes the door behind him - do you...
follow him or
go into the room he just left?
PyroSikTh
4th February 2011, 22:02
I'll go into the room he just left...I think >.>
Pox
4th February 2011, 22:06
you hide your sword and take a seat in a room and get used to the dim light, you notice several orcs with distinctive leather jerkins that have the rotten fist symbol on them, and they swear loudly and shout for more beer. Do you want to
stay in this room and see what happens or
leave and explore the other room.
PyroSikTh
4th February 2011, 22:09
Heh, they sound like they could start on me any minute. I think I'll go and explore the other room.
Pox
4th February 2011, 22:14
you enter a large room with a roaring fire, there are dark cubicals all around and loads of drunk orks, trolls and pretty much everything the wastes has to offer having fun and starting fights. Everyone looks at you funny and a serving wench comes over to you with a flagon on her tray " why have you come here, this is great danger!" do you...
confide in her or
decide to leave at once.
PyroSikTh
4th February 2011, 22:16
I'll confide, see if she can be of any use.
Pox
4th February 2011, 22:23
you confide in her your holy quest given to you by Andy and she takes you upstairs to meet her grandfather whom gives you some real food (heal 2 health) and explains that Pox's power is ever increasing and that you will need slave help if you are to defeat him and his champions, so look for the Old Man in the Iron Cave and sets you on your way. As you travel a large staligmite crashes to the ground beside you (lose 1 luck) making you jump to the side, Suddenly a scream for help reaches your ears to the left.
do you ignore the scream and carry on or
go down the left hand passage?
PyroSikTh
4th February 2011, 22:25
I'll ignore the scream. I have pressing matters at hand!
Pox
4th February 2011, 22:27
you draw up to the iron cave but strangely their is two doors which one do you take?
the left one or
the right one.
PyroSikTh
4th February 2011, 22:29
LadyM says the Right Door, so that's what I'll go for :)
Pox
4th February 2011, 22:33
the door opens easily and then shuts behind you. you are in a square space in front of another door as you grip the handle of the second door, a large iron slab falls down and crushes you. Pancake pyro.

I'm unlikely to eat a bug I find in poxs swamp.....thats akin to stabbing yourself with a knife you find....
I see the logic...
leaving the maggot alone you keep going for what seems an age and can't help your tummy rumble with hunger (deduct 1 point of health) you eventually come across a section where the tunnel slopes downwards with platforms hewn into the rock, ahead of you in the darkness a shape falls to ground and then you hear 2 burly orcs holding torches come down a corridor towards the tunnel. In a brief reflection of their torches you see that the shape that collapsed is a wounded dwarf brandishing a metal collar in his hand. Do you...
help the dwarf or
wait in the shadows to see what happens?
sneggy
11th February 2011, 04:37
always help a dwarf in need.
also dont I have rations I can eat if im hungry?
Pox
11th February 2011, 08:07
you step forward to help the dwarf and one of the orcs tries to stand up to you but you hack and slash away till he is little more then a bleeding mess on the floor - the other orc simply grabs the collar out of the dwarfs hand and legs it back the way he came. Examing the dwarf you notice a wicked barbed arrow in his side, and his eyes are already in a poisoned fever, he mumbles out some gratitude and for you kindness but it is too late as the poison is far in his system, he simply mutters "look to the slaves....look to Pox's Bar." giving a prayer for the dead dwarf you carry on your way and come across you stagger down the corridor in a haze and come across the fabled Pox Bar! as you do a large figure in a black cloak stumbles out and falls flat on his face.
do you help him out
or prefer to keep a low profile?
sneggy
11th February 2011, 14:06
First things first. anything i can loot from that dwarf? they are known for having kickass armour/shields and such? They also have a habit of having ranged weapons...that could be handy to pick up.
Secondly Helping people out seems to be my thing. So hell save the dude in black....if hes a monster I am gunna be soooooo mad about it.

1 - he is a dwarf slave he wears dirty rags he has never known money and has no possessions or items of value.

The humans there are arrayed in full plate and all seem injured and blind. The captain quickly tells about how these slaves rebelled against Pox's tyrannical rule and sought to defeat him but didn't realise how many minions he had under his control, the captain then calls out "Saliac use the Crystal, use it now!" a tall warrior tells of the dangers but a fresh round of crosssbow bolts makes him change his mind. The group form a circle and start to chant, even so one of their number is hit by a bolt and simply dissapears, you take their place and the man standing next to you is also pierced by a vicious bolt but the chant ends. Suddenly their is darkness like you have never known before and a soft voice speaks into your ear "come lets leave, Pox's minions still rely on sight to track and fight but us blind slaves have always lived this way so let us flee for now." you take their hand and start to leave when a hissing voice reaches your ear "you think you can escape me with your puny spells! i can see you..." you realise one of Pox's champions must be in that orc horde and decide to....(Skill 8/8 health 16/19 luck 6/7)

Negatory, this is a VERY linear game. There is only the three options listed above. (if it makes you feel better all the beasts of nurgle remain silent as you ask them the question and regard you with a stoney glare.) As they squeeze down the corridor to assualt you, all that can be done is to prepare yourself and trust in your sense fighting abilities. The first beast lunges on you and you strike and lob off a tentacle only for it to regenerate back again, getting desperate you continue to defend yourself plunging the sword deep into the beasts head, and it falls to the side deflating with a noxious stink. You try to pull your sword free but it won't budge from the shrinking corpse as the other beast grabs hold of you with it's tentacles and draws your face towards its serrated mouth - in a moment all struggle is gone as a sickening CRUNCH fills the room and your head is crushed by the powerfull jaws of the beast, which then proceeds to eat the rest of your now very dead body. your adventure ends here.

as you carefully crawl under the Plaguebearers gaze the ground gives way as it was a cleverly concealed pit as you fall in you hear the sound of Nurglings laughing as the plaguebearer statues emit a noxious gas from their mouth which, causing your vision to blur and you crash to the ground...
awakening you find youself tied to a post whilst some goblins discuss your fate... "Stupid champions of Pox always late, never on time - well we gotta let this one go, Pox demands entertainment and his Toad Dragon is getting hungry." with toothless grins they smile up at you "You betta run fast, Mr Toady is quite hungry see and Pox likes to feed him at 2pm sharp." With that they undo your bonds even as you start to feel the whole cavern tremble they press your sword back into your hands and leap behind some rocks to watch - not wanting to waste time killing some petty goblins you make a dash for it! Soon though the ledge divides into two, do you go...
left or
right?
(Skill 6/7 health 16/20 luck 8/10, provisions 3.)
I think this game is rigged... Pox is invincible... XD
ssshhh - though saying that Doohickey is doing REALLY well especially considering his piss poor fighting abilities!

Oh :censored:
As the song goes: pass the dutchie to the left hand side
left please
you run down the left hand path whilst the ground shakes behind you and the sounds of orcs screaming reaches your ears, you hold you sword in hand but there is little space to wield it here and the path divides again..do you...
steep track to the left or
gentle slope to the right?
Doohicky
8th March 2011, 23:29
Steep track. Getting aboove this thing is probably my only hope
you work your way up and you start to see lava dribbling down over the cliff edge, an Orc appears behind you but gets showered and falls off screaming in agony. Eventually you reach another ledge sloping to the right do you...
take the ledge going to the right or
jump down to the ledge below?
Doohicky
9th March 2011, 08:44
Lava may have been a warning, but I shall not heed it.
Take ledge to the right
you can still hear the thundering of the toad dragon behind you but you seem to have gained some ground on it, rounding a corner you notice a rather large gap missing and plucking up all your courage you leap across it, skidding slightly at the other end. Gripping your sword you carry on, though their is hardly any room to use it effectively you need to get out of this deadly chase! Do you want too
carry on this way taking a gentle slope right or
drop down to a lower and slightly wider ledge?
Doohicky
10th March 2011, 21:58
keep on going
Pox
11th March 2011, 09:28
you run forward and three orcs rush you but the ledge is so small that one slips and falls whilst you luckily hold you own against the others who then plummet to their doom. Walking forward a little more you come across three ropes dangling down to the bottom of the cavern and the probable end of this race, do you...
take the left rope
the middle rope or
the right rope?
(just to add some perspective, one of these paths is safe, one of these paths will hurt you and one of these paths will kill you outright - have fun picking.)

The duchie gets passed to the Left hand side
Pox
12th March 2011, 06:23
you sheathe your sword and start to climb down, you cannot see anything below you and after some progress you see an orc head appear above you weilding a nasty looking knife. He cuts away at the rope and you fall down, and fall badly, lucky not to be dead! (lose 5 stamina gain 3 luck) Doubly lucky in fact for just as the orc cut your rope a big tongue shot down and sucked the fella away presumably to the maw of the toad dragon itself!
you carry on your way and the cavarn seems endless, how did Pox amass such a huge realm unnoticed? in the dim red glow you hear a cart approaching and to your left a small stone hut do you?
run inside the stone hut or
leap inside a ditch at the side of the road?
(Skill 6/7 health 11/20 luck 10/10, provisions 3.)

Take a provision and into the ditch please
Pox
16th March 2011, 18:54
Sorry for long delay been at head office for a good couple of days away from computer...
You scramble down into the ditch, it is deep and dark and the cart approaches and you hear some shouting aimed at the hut "GUARD!!! have you seen that scum of a forumer Doohickey he seems to have escaped the toad dragon! but if i get hold of him i'm gonna throw em into the ditch and let the nurglings devour im." You stare around and see a horde of slavering nurglings clutching an assortment of crude clubs and spikey impliments. Your Quest ends here.

unfortunatly the PM from Andy lets you go from 0 health back up to 4 this was an instant death trap (like the one that killed pyro with falling blocks of masonry rather then a monster itself.) you did get exceptionally far though even if you chose to go the toad dragon death race route which is incredibly dangerous in and off itself! There is always the next one and you certainly got a lot further then most (looks at Drakon)
looks like CJB might be up next so maybe he can follow from your lead.

Right Beeva to get ye started, if their is any particular route you would wish to "shadow" from a former challenger just let me know (ie Pox just do what X player did until this point...) will speed the game up a little.
"A huge earthquake rips through the forum and a mighty chasm appears filled with a rather noxious smell, something devious is underfoot *pun intended* and Beeva is called by Andy to discover that the mystical firewall that kept Pox in place has been stolen and he has moved from his swamp to the mighty chasm where he is working to bring down the entire forum.
(Beeva's stats - VERY good fighter, but piss poor luck and health - hmmm the opposite of doohickey!)

Huzzah! Me and me trusty sword (named and hereby reffered to as Dammed Awesome) would like to follow Doohicky up to Beth's cave, but this time I'mm try and keep all of my fingers and not catch any Bloodfish!

you follow bravely in the footsteps of Doohicky the far travelled, with your damned awesome sword, your bravado and fighting prowess is a thing of legends and song (and you know it) and proceed to Pox's bar and hear about the plight of the slaves there. As you leave Pox's bar you can't help but sing a song about how you are going to smash Pox into little ickle bits and rescue the forum. Unfortunately for you it does not seem to be your lucky day for where everyone else has happily dodged the rather dangerous falling staligmites it seems you must be infected by "drakonism" for a large staligmite hurtles down and impales you into the ground crushing your bones and leaving you to die in agony reflecting on the unfairness of the universe.
ouch! seems luck is actually an important skill after all.
just CJB left it seems.

lmao so Doohicky seems destined to be the furthest goer....I am rather proud everyone since me has mimicked me. Right up to the point where I went slightly mad and decided to start trying to sword fight in the dark.

Sneggy met a chosen but had to run away from him as it was pitch black and he couldn't see let alone fight. You are the only one to defeat a chosen that is true, and you went first so that says something!
