View Full Version : The Program [Game Start!] Day 1 [00:00]
SonsOfStalingrad
4th May 2011, 00:31
In the near future, a random class of school children has been kidnapped, marooned on an island, and forced to compete on The Program, a popular reality show that requires its contestants to battle to the death.
So, what is The Program?
The Program is a popular reality show that plays twice a year, made fully legal by the government via something marked as the 'BR Act'. Participation is randomised and viewing is encouraged.
If you want to sign-up, simply post here and i'll send you a PM asking a myriad of questions. From there, your character will be created. That's it. No powergaming here!
Heck, characters AND what you'll start with are BOTH random! It's down to luck, skill and ideas! Last year's winner before last was a girl, however last year's winner was a boy who set a new kill record!

If people keep joining like this, I might have an actual 40kforums class with no mooks in it whatsoever!
We'll be starting whenever i've got everyone at 'ready' status.
Just a note - Tic Tac, Pyro, Drakon and CJB have -all- chosen to play honestly as their actual former selves from school. This will make the game much more interesting and fun. Let's see who else joins this way!

Right then, that's all but one of the current signees up and ready, bar some data on which random weapon they're settling on, as you all know you got a random weapon but could use your luck characteristic to be a little more lucky with that random selection. I've seen some truly interesting choices when people have had the option between two different types of weapon, or a weapon and a non-weapon, or weapons of two different types, not at all what I expected.
So, allow me to explain for those that're ready to play the game. Later on, I will make the opening post. This will be in the form of the traditional schoolroom opening. This will explain where the game is this time around and all the usual data for people not familiar with the source material. Shortly thereafter, you will be sent a private message containing data on what's in all of your bags (useful or no!) as well as what number you left the school in and what you see. From there you'll be able to make up your mind on how you're going to star in this season of The Program.
If all goes well, this may become my signature forum game.

Probably not. It'll simply be 'Kill any and all other kids you see'

Nah, I wouldn't think so. Here's the plot:
We're students, we get some food and drink for several days, and some random items. We each leave the school separately, the earlier guys getting a headstart, etc. The objective is to kill everyone. There are also other twists which I'm sure SoS will tell you about.

It's valentines day. Love is in the air in Hokuyou Academy. That's your school, by the way... Incase you weren't too aware. In traditional custom, this is the day where girls give chocolate to the boys they like, and boys give cards or flowers to girls they like. It's a really chirpy, happy atmosphere, everyone is looking much more happy than usual - if you have a special someone, you can notice them seeming even more pretty than normal because of the increased happiness today. There's red ribbons and decorations all around the school and the afternoon lessons were cancelled to make way for a special valentine's party in the gymnasium, too! Oh, and it's compulsory, so don't you dare think about cutting school because the lessons have ended early. You know who that's about. Trouble-makers.
The gymnasium is alive with music and dancing, eating and drinking!
A few of the popular girls packed their bags lightly or brought an extra bag today so they would wear special dresses, a few of the guys just ignored dress code and put on fancy or expensive looking suits. Your year's bully trio, looming by the corner of the food table look like Yakuza (That's the Japanese mafia, for those uninformed) the way they're watching everyone and talking hushed to each other.
So, corny music and jokes from the teacher-turned-DJ, Mister Takezuchi aside, it's a pretty good party... As the time runs on however, you feel yourself getting tired. It's hard to even keep your eyes open.
Before you collapse to the ground, you see a person trying to get out through the main doors. They're locked - - maybe you also get just enough time to notice the windows don't open anymore either and the fire escape doesn't work before you pass out into blackness.
You awake huddled with your classmates in an unusual looking school room. Not unusual as in it doesn't look like a conventional classroom however, it's as average as it gets. But this isn't your school - Look, the floors are hard wood. And your school had chalkboards, this one clearly has a whiteboard and a projector. Where are you? It's looking kind of dark outside. You must have been out for hours - no way to tell, there's no clock in the room.
"What is this?" one of the children asks.
Your head feels like it's been padded up with cotton.
The door.
One of the girls in the class clumsily reaches for it... but it opens, an adult figure walking in, followed by an armed escort of six combat-ready soldiers. These guys are armed to the teeth - tactical vests, assault rifles, the lot. There's mass screaming from the class as people try to inch further away - as if they could phase through the wall in their terror.
"Sit down." the teacher says casually, as if nothing's wrong. "Sit yourselves down." The soldiers aren't moving or saying anything.
The students, terrified, move to the tables and chairs in the classroom. You too, eventually take your seat.
None of you recognise this teacher.
"All seated? Ready for your lesson? Good." the teacher says, "I am Mister Fukuda. I will be your teacher over the next few days..." he clicks a button on a control, the projector flashes into life.
"The BR Act." these words display on the projector as the teacher says them. "Are any of you familiar... with this piece of law?"
silence. It's not something you know. You either never heard of it or never payed enough attention.
"At the dawn of the Millenium, the nation collapsed. At 15% unemployment, 10 million were out of work, 800,000 students boycotted school. Eventually, we passed the 'Millenium Educational Reform Act'. Also known as the 'BR Act'." he clicks another button and a TV clip plays.
A female reporter with a very short, rough-cut red bob appears on the screen, there's a large bus with military escorts behind her. "..Just outside the location for this year's first installment of The Program! the woman declares, "we can now confirm that this year's lucky contestants are from Hokuyou Academy. The large number of this class is sure to prove a challenge, with the possibility that they will beat least year's record!"
with a click, the tv clip ends.
"The Program." Fukuda says, "Do any of you watch each season and show your support..?"
No one raises their hand. Of course, you've heard of it.. Who hasn't? Most other TV shows stop playing to increase viewer ratings.
"No one? Well, that's okay." Fukuda tells you. "Here, in summary are the rules."
With a click, a map displays on the projector.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/Ophiuchus/BR1label.png
(Please people, save this to your HD. It'll be important. Grey is roads. Yellow is unlisted areas, mostly housing.)
"This..." he says, "Is this year's battlefield. Urban. Modern. Very nice, you're quite lucky - This is top class compared to the ghettos we usually have to use for urban seasons..."
Your eyes scan the map.
"Now. The area has been completely abandoned. Don't worry about holding back, go wild out there. Explosions and destruction of property will sure get more people watching!"
Your neck feels itchy at this point. If you hadn't been very observant before, you and everyone in class has been fitted with a collar around your neck.
"After everyone leaves the school... It becomes a danger zone. Then, at 6 and 12 AM and PM, I will announce home room messages over area-wide PA systems." he pauses, looking over the class.
"Don't be in the danger zone when it's active. It could be... hazardous to your health. You see, those stylish collars you're wearing..."
click. The projector displays a closeup of a collar. "Waterproof, shockproof, stainless. They monitor your pulse and location at all times. If you enter a danger zone, or you don't play by the rules... It'll explode." after a pause he smiles and asks, "would anyone like a practical demonstration?"
Silence. People are barely blinking, let alone asking questions.
"Too bad..." he sighs, "Oh. Before you think of it, no, you can't leave the city. There's armed guards posted at the roads and even if you got past them, your collar will detonate if you leave the battle area.."
he clicks to another screen, showing a picture of a military rucksack, but he facepalms and smikes.
"Oh, silly me. Before I forget, don't fuck with those collars too much. They react the same to being taken off as they do to danger zones, so... try to deal with the itching as best you can, alright?"
"What is this?!" one of the girls pipes up. Not one you know.
The teacher looks over at them. "What do we do when we have a question...." he looks at a piece of paper on his desk, "Girl number 12, Fuomi Nasagawa..?"
Sheepishly, the girl raises her hand.
"Go on." Fukuda says, a smug quality to his voice.
"What is this?" she asks again.
"A game." Fukuda says simply. "If you don't listen to the rules, you're going to lose."
he clicks and the picture of a bag changes to one showing a contents. As he does this, a bag is placed on his desk by one of the soldiers. A trolley containing these bags is brought in.
"In order to play the game, we generously give you this bag. In it, you will each find food and drink, a map of the combat zone, a flashlight and a compass. Don't lose it. You'll also find a random weapon in the bag."
"A weapon, sir?" one of the boys pipes up, nervously.
"Yes. This is the nature of the game in The Program..." Fukuda unzips his bag, lifting out a hefty looking fire axe. "This is a good bag. Some of the weapons are better, some worse. It's all luck.."
"What do we need weapons for?!" the boy asks.
Disgruntled by the lack of respect, the teacher looks up. "Let's cut today's lesson short." he says, "You're all contestants. There can only be one winner. How you choose to go about getting rid of the others is entirely up to you. If you go past 3 full days of time... or no one dies within a 24 hour period, all the collars will detonate simultaneously. No one wins, and the season loses a fuckton of money on potential merchandise sales. So try not to let that happen, right?"
The teacher puts the axe back in the bag and throws it onto the pile of bags. "Oh. In the interest of fairness, seeing as the girls might need things of a personal nature, you're all allowed your schoolbags and whatever you had in them."
A straight-A student you're familiar with raises his hand, using his other hand to push his glasses up.
"Hirono?" The teacher nods.
"If we are contestants... what is the prize?"
The teacher claps. "These are the questions you should be asking, people!" he levels up to the class again. "If you win, you get to go home. Any need you have will be taken care of. You will never want for anything. We will see to that. However..."
He takes a black pen, bites the cap off and writes on the whiteboard. '47'. He then writes a '1' before turning back to the class and spitting the black pen lid out of his mouth.
"Basic maths, class. There are 47 of you. There can only be one winner. How many classmates need to be subtracted from you to make that happen?"
silence.
"Any more questions?"
((Okay. This is it. Before we begin, seriously. Ask, in character, anything you'd like to know.))

How will we know which are the danger zone and how long do we have to exit them after you announce them?
Is everything on camera or are there private areas?
Can two players team up and decide to draw at the end?
If we kill another student are we legally protected so as to not be prosecuted upon re-entering the real world?
Oh and one more thing? Just who the fuck do you think you are?
SonsOfStalingrad

Fukuda smiles. "Such entusiastic questioning!"
How will we know which are the danger zone and how long do we have to exit them after you announce them?
"At 6 and 12 AM and PM, Home room announcements will be made over a battleground-wide PA system. I will announce the locations of Danger Zones based on your map grids. I won't repeat them later, so mark them down. If you're in a danger zone when it is announced, you'd best move within five minutes. The ones that are announced for later... will be immediate."
Is everything on camera or are there private areas?
"Cameras are set up around the city. Some places don't have good visibility, so will you all please promise to save the killing for areas with more than one camera? It makes it much better for the DVD highlights if we get multiple angles."
Can two players team up and decide to draw at the end?
"Only if by 'draw' you mean in the classic western style. Guns at noon!"
If we kill another student are we legally protected so as to not be prosecuted upon re-entering the real world?
"The winner will be protected. They will be elevated to celebrity status. Their actions during the game will not earn them a criminal record."
Oh and one more thing? Just who the fuck do you think you are?
"I am Mister Fukuda. I am your teacher. Unless you want to be the demonstration model for the collar detonation, i'd suggest you watch your fucking language."

He then puts his hand up ready to ask a couple of questions. "Is there anywhere we can get more weaponry? And are Danger Zones off-limits permanently?"
SonsOfStalingrad
5th May 2011, 19:36
Fukuda smiles, "As your teacher, I will be here in the school. Which will be a danger zone. The only way to get to me would be to break the rules. You break the rules, you break the law - as you'd be resisting the BR Act."
Fukuda then turns to pyro. "Yes. Whatever you can make or find, though most of the city has been cleared out - cars will lack fuel, and so on. That or you could always kill someone and take their weapon."

"Are there any specific methods of killing that are not allowed, or is it no holds barred?"
"If you can think of it, I invite you to try it. If you do something innovative, i'm sure we can give you a bonus prize if you win. Of course... what with '99's brutal rape-a-thon, you'll be hard pressed to drum up enough ratings."
"How will it work on immediate exit of the school? I can't imagine your ratings would be too high if we all just beat each other to death in the first half an hour."
"You've got five minutes after you leave before this place becomes a danger zone. I'd suggest you use them wisely."
Scythes raises his hand, "excuse me sir, but I'm a little hazy on the danger zones. Do they just become danger zones randomly and we're screwed if we happen to be in them? Also, once a danger zone is a danger zone is announced will it remain so for the rest of our time here?" He then picks up his pack and starts rummaging through it to see what's inside. "Last time i'm going to say this. I will read out danger zones. For example, the first home room announcement will be in a few hours. I could state A-2 is a danger zone immediately, followed by C-8 from 02:00 and F-4 from 04:00. That's how it'll work."

6th May 2011, 10:06
But is A-2 still a danger zone once another activates? can there only be 1 danger zone at a time or do we gradually just gain more and more as time passes?Danger zones will gradually increase. It's not uncommon for the danger zones to never become safe again, but you never know - If it's good for ratings, it'll happen.
"We won't be charged for any crimes whatsoever? So murder, rape... arson is all fair game?"
Any acts you commit on The Program are all covered within the BR Act. Hell, i'd suggest everyone aim to commit at least two of those three from the list. Be inventive, and please limit it to where the cameras are. Audio-only doesn't get anywhere near as many viewers.
"That's not what I asked, sir. What's stopping us from just beating each other up in the first half an hour as soon as we leave the Danger Zone?"Well, if you fancy going for the record, that would be a good plan - but i'm sure the moment that map was displayed everyone took a good look and decided on a place they're going to try to get to. They won't all be the same, so unless you're one of the lucky ones packing an uzi or something, it's doubtful you can get them all at once!

OOC Question: The 6 and 12 am and pm thing, is that real time or some type of strange in game time?
((It'll be in-game. The game mechanics will be PM'd to you in a bit. =) ))
"O-kay, you're all so eager to get started. That's good, little warriors!" Fukuda stands, nodding to one of the soldiers. "I will be reading your names out. You will be given a bag and then you will leave the school grounds..."
Fukuda takes this time to eye up the students. "For most of you, this is a farewell. For one of you... i'll see you in a few days."
The teacher proceeds to read out your names. One at a time.
((Feel free to post your actions leaving the building. You'll be getting a PM shortly with an explanation of mechanics))
EDIT: All messages sent out. I should have explained better - Don't post your movements up in the thread, keep that to PMs with me, unless you want to broadcast your location to everyone. Not always a good idea. However, it's a good idea to post reactions to the home room announcements and so on. How we're going to work this in time is three movements to each home room. There's four home rooms a day meaning 12 moves for each day. The thread title will change to show what time it is. This will be important for knowing your danger zones.

Just a quick note to all players!
Unfortunately this weekend, the router where SoS stays has been replaced as the last one was dodgy and didn't work well. The new one works perfectly =) For everyone except SoS.. Apparently, its not compatible for Windows 7, and SoS is the only housemate with the newest OS apparently!
He can check the thread from his blackberry, but it will be slow, and laborious at the current time - so just to warn you guys that updates may be a bit slower than anticipated. But please keep posting your moves to him - I think so far (or as far as he's seen, as more may have been posted since) we have TFG, myself and Drakon, and hopefully it'll speed up soon :D

Don't worry, Drak, sensei Fukuda would like to reassure you that the show will go on, even if it's later than scheduled - got to think of the ratings, ey?
I've got pms from most of you, I'll be sorting out what happens at work on lunch break and then hopefully posting back tonight, blackberry permitting.
Don't worry, most of you will be safe... Mostly.
And to whoever asked about home room, as it'd take too lpong to scroll up on this thing... In battle royale, there were regularly scheduled announcements over battlefield wide speaker towers. These announcements include who died in what order, upcoming danger zones and usually insults from the teacher. In the manga, they named these 'home rooms', driving in the fact its all based on schools.
Also, addressing an issue from a PM - I won't be updating that map for you. If you don't have image editing software, I'd suggest a word-based document of them.. Or a physical notepad. Or going the whole hog and printing your map to mark in pen!
The reason I am not updating it is that if a player is at any point unconscious, the danger zones will only be PM'd to those currently in the land of the living. Adds an actual element of danger to the game!

Don't worry about it bud. As SoS said, I don't think I can trust any of you ;)

i'd help, as i say, if i had connection on my pc.. as it is, i can't update the images... so i'll try to be more descriptive on placement...
we'll move forward a single hour once the current actions conclude. expect some filler text post at that time.

Oddly enough I'm loving this game. Keep it up SoS!

Out of the players that have replied, I just need to know if drak is saying yes or no on an issue. After I have that, I'll make a forward turn.. And force-move inactive players out of the danger zone for fairness' sake.

Alright! I can't edit the first post on my blackberry, but I'll see if Sammch would mind editing for me later.
The time is now 23:00, you may all make your moves!
It's fascinating to see how you all behave right now. I'll ask you all to keep silent, but one of you IS playing.

Are you gonna keep track of who kills who or maybe just kill counts and post it up at the end?
SonsOfStalingrad
11th May 2011, 20:08
Edited the title time by the most Awesomest, ever-cool and talented Sammich, who shall be ruler of the universe and all food-stuffs, and you shall all be her subjects.
I declare: Gnomosexual Nipplecakes.
Carry on. *salutes*
SonsOfStalingrad

Honestly, I ask her to change the title and this is what she does...
Anyway, answer is I'm going to 'novelise' certain highlights, keep note of l kills and interesting dialogue and action... And post that at the end as a 'yearbook' for this season's show.

So far, I only have a turn 2 move from drakon and tfg. Come on, guys! Standing around isn't any fun!

I'm kind of waiting to find out if my adversaries have killed me or if I kill them. Cant do much until you tell me that.....
SonsOfStalingrad

@sneggy, you have to run first. as it's down to my poor ability to updare, i'll accept a late move from you for that turn.
MIDNIGHT, 00:00.
you're probably tired and scared right now, so soon into the contest.
wherever you are, you can hear radio static, then a clear message in Fukuda's voice... "Good morning, little warriors! I use that term loosely, few fights so far... although boy 19... 'sneggy'? your antics could be the dvd trailer alone!"
"Here's the list of your friends in the order they died...
boy 02, hatano yukitane and girl 09, nawa tsune... two for one deal!
girl 21, kitagai toshie... evening numbers of girls to boys."
"danger zones! pens at the ready, class? from 02:00, H7. That's H7. 04:00, E3... then, at 06:00, J8..."
"I'd advise you to put on a better show, or i'll add more than three next time."

SonsOfStalingrad

well, that'd certainly explain the lack of reply. I'll re-send the last message.

Damn, this has me interested, wish I could read the actions!
Story of my life though, day late and a dolla short!

25th May 2011, 15:20
You do not want to see my actions.....it would ruin the finished product. As SoS said in his last update, I am the human highlight reel. I threw a wrench at a man with an ak-47 and won that fight!

25th May 2011, 15:35
lawl...
How is the storyline done...cos i'd really like to read it...is it just done through your PMs?
sneggy
25th May 2011, 16:51
I imagine there will be a published version at the end but yeh its all PM based at the moment.
I hope there will be a published version. I am a whirling ball of ridiculous carnage.
SonsOfStalingrad
25th May 2011, 17:52
i'm going to be compiling the PM format messages into a novelised format, filling in gaps, etc, of all the best bits.
I'll then post it at the end for everyone to see what happened... some things, by sheer random chance, have surprised me.

Part of its ingenuity is its secrecy.
