View Full Version : Gob Stoppers

It has long been custom for new adventurers to set out from the city and enter the woods. Soon they come across the caverns owned by the evil race of goblins. These goblins pillage the countryside and hoard great treasures. It is your job to quest out and enter their caverns to kill them all and take their treasures...
Well...that's what I'd say, if you weren't a goblin. You are a diminutive creature relegated by the fates to live in the deep caverns and die by any one of a thousand gruesome and potentially hilarious fatal events. Whatever you feel, be it fear or greed, you are to defend your home from those pesky humans who want to steal your shiny things.
This RPG tosses you into a party of goblins who must defend their home from adventurers...while defending themselves from the dangers of the deep caves and other goblins.
Classes
Goblin: Average goblin. Great as sword fodder for the level 1 Adventurer. Goblins are jacks of all trades, most of which lead to a painful and early death.
Strength: 2
Stamina: 2
Weapon Skill: 1
Ranged: 1
Intelligence: 2
Magic:1

Bully: Some goblins are bigger than others. Perhaps they survived the previous winter's raids, or they simply get a lot of exercise while avoiding death in the tunnels. Whatever the reason, Bullies are large and tend to take charge. They can usually find (or requisition) better gear than their smaller friends. Many Bullies fancy themselves great warriors, and their comrades are all too happy to let them charge at a foe, while they pick a new leader.

Trickster: All goblins can be crafty with each other. But some goblins are crafty by the standards of even human children. These goblins tend to find ways of killing their enemies with more subtlety than the average rock-to-brain methodology of most goblins. These tactics range from creating small landslides to kill tribal leaders to shoveling poisonous fungus down the throats of those with shinier objects.

Tinkerer: Some goblins are not just crafty in a murderous way. Some of them are intelligent enough to create odd contraptions and tools. Some of these wondrous items help in seasonal harvest. Some of these items help defend the cave. But the most exciting items have some ability to kill those who intrude in the cave, as well as the poor goblins testing the item

Shaman: Every tribe of goblin has some members with magical abilities. Most of these primitive priests serve as conduits to the god mother who blesses the moss harvest. Some, however, can wield both protective and destructive magic in a way that seems almost planned. Shamans are viewed with the closest thing to respect goblins can muster, fear.

Traits
Artistic: Some Goblins can use the various fungi and minerals to paint. It's rare. It's frowned upon. It's never mentioned, but it happens. (No Bully)
Crazed: Some goblins are truly fanatical. This often shows itself in combat as the goblin become a flailing flurry of blows. Crazed goblins are often greatly honored amongst their tribe; however, they usually don't get to enjoy it for long.
Curiosity: Sometimes you investigate things and discover something special. Remember, curiosity killed the goblin....just like knives, arrows, stones...and anything else that ever encountered a goblin.
Dark Vision: All goblins can see in the dark, but some can see even better in the deepest dark. Of course most end up wishing they couldn't see what was in the caves.
Evasive: Some goblins can easily roll out of the way of harm. this combat maneuver usually ends with the goblin diving into some other danger.
Lucky: Some goblins carry a rabbits foot or clover...some have even strapped entire live bunnies to themselves all in the name of fighting fate. Some goblins are just naturally lucky. If no other evidence existed...they are still alive, a feat impressive for any goblin.
Liar: Sometimes a goblin just has to lie...
Nervous: Some goblins are even more afraid than others. These tend to live long through pure cowardice. Nervous goblins can often detect dangers of which their comrades are completely unaware. (No Bully, Shaman, Tinkerer)
Netter: You have been dragged on the various hunts for creatures in the depths of the cave. Sometimes netters get greedy and get carried away by the massive creatures they attempt to capture. Netters know the best ways to use goblin nets. (No Tinkerer, Bully)
Ranger: At some point a poor goblin found himself lost in the woods. There he viewed an elf ranger lay waste to her enemies with a longbow. He was immediately enamored with this concept and ran back to his cave to share the joys of ranged combat. He soon invented the Goblin shortbow. This unnamed goblin was later found dead on a makeshift archery range. Goblin rangers carry on the long tradition of trying to shoot enemies and then running away. (No Bully, Shaman, Tinkerer)
Sprinter: When you need to run, you need to run fast
Stick 'Em With The Pointy End: Some goblins have clearly trained with a weapon and know which end to hold. These goblins are more skilled at hitting their enemies with melee weapons. (No Tinkerer, Shaman)
Tester: Every now and then an unlucky goblin will be chosen to test a new device or to be the target of a spell. Those goblins that survive the tests become more resilient to magic and sometimes even blowing up. (Goblin Only)
Trap Master: Goblins are tricky bastards. They defend themselves not through might, but rather through devious traps and of course countless replacements. A goblin can make a quick name for itself with a well placed trap...unless it is sprung by a bully, then the trapper wants to remain nameless. (No Bully, Shaman)
Troll Herder: Somehow you got relegated to this job somewhere in your life. Even more miraculous...you survived. You are pretty skilled at fighting various monsters, or rather...not getting eaten.
Weaponized: All goblins use found weapons. Some goblins find pretty big weapons. Most cannot use them well, but some learn eventually. They eventually learn to use it like a great weapon. (No Trickster, Tinkerer, Shaman)
Combo Maneuvers
Get in There! (Bully and 2+ Goblins): A Bully is a scary thing...sometimes scarier than whatever lies ahead. Goblins know that they will be beaten if they don't do what bullies say, so when they get a command they find some way to try...or at least get away from the bully. The goblins fight harder when the bully is watching.
Rally (6+ Goblins): Goblins fight better in groups. They tend to work themselves into a fervor as more get together. While a single goblin is anything but scary, a group of them can bring down even a battle hardened foe.
How Far? (2 Bullies): "I can beat that." Sometimes bullies will throw other goblins...usually to get them into the fight. Often the fight is forgotten in name of the new sport.
Hold him! I'll stab him in the gibbly bits! (3 Goblins and 1+ Tricksters): Goblins can overwhelm foes simply by holding them down. It's then the task of a sneaky goblin to stab the victim in the soft spots.
I'm right behind you! (Trickster and 4+ Allies): Tricksters will use their allies as a distraction to get away from a fight. This tried and true tactic has kept many a trickster alive for up to minutes after their allies are slaughtered.
Here, hold this a minute (Tinkerer and Goblin): Every tinkerer needs a guinea pig. When the tiny rodents can't be found, the scrawnier goblins nearby will do. The poor goblin will be assigned to hold anything from a spring-loaded shield to a fire breathing gun to a bomb. This often ends in almost as many enemies dying as goblins.
Casting Circle (2+ Shaman): When multiple Shaman gather together, strange and amazing things can happen. Having a buddy around expands the Shaman creativity and the will sometimes cast spells meant for Bullies on Tinkerers. This can have wonderful effects or disastrous results, as the more shaman that are casting...the more chance for an accident. One or both Shaman are prone to exploding*
Shaman Spells
Mend: One of the Shaman's main jobs is to cure the wounds of the tribe. Some can go so far as to replace lost limbs. It is for this reason that Shaman are not killed out of fear.
Zap: Shamans have the ability to unleash a bolt of magical energy at their foes. While this is not usually fatal, it is disruptive and surprising
Could be Bigger: Shamans are often at the top of the fear pecking order, but it's nice to have a bully for back up. Shamans like to make their bully allies bigger than normal with their gobbie magic (Bully)
Dark Shroud: The shaman casts forth a small dark cloud to conceal the movements of his fellows. Many shaman find it funny to place the cloud only over their allies heads, so that they only think they are unseen (Trickster)
Power Up: There is a fine line between genius and insanity....for most races. For goblins...there are no lines. So to is there a blur between magic and technology. Tinkerers need power for many of their gadgets, but lack the understanding to build batteries and generators. Instead they rely on a Shaman to pour some power into their devices. As with everything in the life of a goblin...this often ends terribly (Tinkerer)
Channeling: Sometimes a lead Shaman will require that his peons aid his power. A Shaman can channel his own power into another Shaman giving him even greater power. An irritating Zap can become a fatal bolt with such power. Of course it is dangerous for both casters involved, as the magic can backfire killing either Shaman....or both* (Shaman)
Conduit: Shaman can cast their spells through the bodies of nearby goblins. Most of the time this will injure or even kill the conduit*, but it allows the Shaman to cast around corners and from safety of longer range (Goblin)
*Burst: Often conduits explode...much to the delight of goblin spectators. This burst of magical energy does damage to everything around the conduit and can even flare back to the Shaman

Notes on gameplay:
In every ACTION post, you must list the following:
Class:
Trait:
Item Equipped:
If you post without this it will be ignored as you talking to the team
You can stack goblins to get higher, to reach things, and get range or sight.
Goblins can lift any one goblin of any class except a Bully
A Bully can lift any class, including another Bully.
A bully may also choose to lift a goblin, holding another goblin...thus making a three tall stack
Items:
You may only have 1 item equipped at a time because goblins are flighty and have short attention spans. Items are lost when a goblin dies.
Goblin Sack: Every player has an inventory that they may maintain over the course of a goblin's life. Items in the sack disappear if the goblin dies. A goblin that survives a level may keep the sack, even if class is changed.
Goblin Vault: Occasionally you will be given the option to put items into the vault. These items will then not be lost upon death. The vault may be accessed at the beginning of levels and at certain points in the game. The vault is communally shared. Placing items into the vault, or getting items from the vault will be rewards for surviving over time rather that crashing through a life
The next post is the Goblin Vault where you can see the list of items available (you may never take more than one item from the vault at a time)
************************************************** ****
The chief seems extra grumpy today. Even his pet rat is agitated as he sits upon the large mushroom throne in the cavern.
"Boys! Boy!" you and your comrades slowly and suspiciously approach the crazed king. You suspect it has to do with that band of adventurers from last week. They came in and killed a dozen goblins before taking some treasure and returning to the human town.
"Do ya know why we lost yesterday?" several answers and calls resound
"They were bigger"
"We forgot to use da pointy end"
"They killed more of us than we did of them?"...
..."We didn't kill any of them"
..."Oh right...well that seems like a good reason then"
The king silences the crowd with the ceremonial throwing of the large rock, which brains the honored goblin.
"We lost because they have better and shinier stuff...and magic!" There is a small zapping sound followed by a concussive boom..."Real magic. That's why we're gonna raid the town and their wizard's tower."
There was a cacophonous and resounding silence.
"Who wants to go show those humans and their wizard who's boss!?"
More silence
"Ok you lot there, and you over there...and I see you sneaking out...you're going too"
And thus did you and your comrades get picked to go raid the wizard's tower.
Your adventure will begin soon. But first you must choose a team name, colors and banner!
(this will also serve as time to ask any questions, as i do already have the first map set up)

50 goblins total
Class Maximums for the Mission
Bully - 5
Trickster - 5
Tinkerer - 5
Shaman - 3
Any of these classes can be replaced by a normal gob in the totals...they are not on top of the total. After 50 goblins die...the mission is over. No class other than Goblin can have more than 2 active members at any one time.
For every level of the mission that your goblin lives after his first, you may place one item in the vault. For every second level your goblin lives after the first, he may take on a second Trait. In this way you are rewarded for not just dying haphazardly
All goblins will be beginning with their default items:
Goblin- NA
Bully- NA
Trickster- Butter Knife
Tinkerer- Wrench
Shaman- Staff

Level 1, Round 1, 50 Goblins remain
You storm into the town along with the rest of the goblin tribe. There is much havoc as peasants flee, goblins throw rocks, and guards slay goblins. Your group make their way towards the tower, and seeing guards at the front gate, elect to hop into the sewer. The sewer is a dark in dirty place...and soon you find yourselves on the first floor...but you are not alone. Giant rats are running towards you. They seem angry and terrified, and behind them looms several magical oozes. Perhaps the combination of the sewer waters and the magic of the tower. It's time to raid!
*Remember you must post class, trait and equipped item in every thread (along with anything you pick up and put in your sack).
**Don't forget combos and don't forget stacking when needed
***The world is very interactive and about exploring the level, you just need to make it to the other door
****Enjoy

Gob Stoppers Turn 2: 50 goblins
**A note about game notes. I'll do a short write-up for each player and include any traits that come into effect during the write-up. Note that the trait may belong to someone else but be listed after the effect on someone else.
Tone: You and Silas run to the armor and jump upon it wrenching the sword free. The weapon falls upon Silas (lucky) and clocks him on the head. the small goblin yelps and the weapon clatters backwards.
Silas: You see the rats coming and run back squealing (nervous) as you try to get to the sword.
Lexius: You dive behind Drakon
Scythes: You grab the sconce which is quite large and on the floor. You manage to lift it just enough to tip it over upon yourself. Flaming oil splatters everywhere. Sneggy, Silas and Scythes are covered in oil and fire. There is much screaming for a few moments as the goblins die. (-3 goblins).
Beeva: You pick up a small shard of stone and hurl it forward striking one of the rats and causing it to skitter a bit.
Drakon: your bellowing is as usual, quite scary to your fellows. Tone and Beeva will be granted a bonus to any combat. You then pick up Lexius and hurl him forward. This attack seems to hurt both Lexius and the Rat. Both recover and Lexius stands just in time to be swarmed and torn apart by the giant rodents (-1 trickster, -1 goblin)
Nal: Your bellowing just adds to the chorus of Drakon's own commands. You do however spot the spilled sword and pick it up (weaponized). You may use the weapon by listing it as your equipped item. [Decorative Sword] gained
Pyro: You see several suits of armor and torches that could be knocked over (trap master), but you see nothing that could be used to specifically make a trap.
Sneggy: Dead before your action (I decided to just go in first post first action method).
Silas, Sneggy, Scythes, and Lexius: Pick another gob.
Remaining: 46 goblins, 3 Tricksters, 4 Tinkerers, 3 Bullies, 3 Shaman
No more than two of each special class may be used at one time.

Turn 3, 46 goblins remain
Tone: You scramble up the side of the bully...he seems not to notice for the moment.
Silas: You point at the rat and a green bolt of lighting jumps from your finger singing the air and ears of nearby goblins. The wounded rat seizes and flips over dead.
Lexius: You do the same as the other shaman, but the bolt explodes on your finger and sends you to the ground.
SGS: You continue to cower behind the larger goblin bully
Sneggy: You run forward and look as appetizing as possible, and when a rat darts for you, you dive back towards the group. You do trip though and fall flat on your face amongst your comrades
Drakon: You are unable to grab SGS, because there is a goblin on your shoulders
Scythes: You reach out and pull part of the armor down You dive out of the way as the entire suit topples down to the ground upon the nearby rat. You take note that all the armor seems to fit the Bully, but the torso covers from neck to legs and the legs cover from feet to neck.
Nal: You watch as the remaining rat descends upon Beeva, who is trampled and killed quickly. You then step forward quickly and slash out with a heavy swing (weaponized). You split open the rat's head.
Pyro: You plan seems to have worked so masterfully that you were not even involved.
Beeva: Sadly you have been sacrificed as bait to the rats. You must pick another goblin class and trait to continue.
45 goblins remain, 3 Tricksters, 3 Bullies, 4 Tinkerers, 1 Shaman
Bully and Shaman are maxed at the moment.

Turn 4, 45 goblins remain
Silas: You fire what seems to be an incredibly powerful blast without any sort of suicidal recoil. The ooze shudders and flails with spikes ooze flying out before coming back to the center mass
Pyro: You run and fling yourself onto the torch stand (been established it cannot be lifted by you). Your weight knocks the torch down and forward, spilling oil and fire upon the ooze. The thing almost seems to scream as it burns away.
Tone: You get away with the dance, for now
Nal: You bellow and Scythes and Sneggy get a bonus in combat
Sneggy: You run forward to help, and even kick out at the torch to move it a bit. then you cheer at the victory
Beeva: You run forward and dance in victory
Lexius: You channel a powerful force from yourself into Silas, who seems to survive the process...A beam of green energy connect you both.
Drakon: You run forward and fling Tone ahead of yourself. He goes into the ooze, which closes around him. You follow quickly and soon feel the searing of your flesh as you melt. The ooze swells greatly in size as it feeds (-1 Bully, -2 goblins)
Drakon and Tone must choose a new class and trait.

Turn 5, 43 goblins remain
Pyro: There once was a goblin name Gobimedes who had learned from Gobrates. He built a great war machine that could fling boulders across a whole valley. Unfortunately he was squashed by a giant last winter for copyright infringement, you were on your own. You have rigged a small harness onto Beeva. The boots have just enough give to spring forward a bit with the leather strap between them. You have the helmet loaded...all other pieces are in use
Drakon: You cower behind Nal.
Silas: You draw back with both your energy and the energy being generated from Lexius. You send out a huge burst of green energy that immediately explodes back on you, throwing you to the ground.
Tone: You scamper up the bully, and are immediately thrown to the ground
Nal: you pull the small goblin up roughly then retreat back to the shamans
Sneggy: In a show of great goblin heroism you grab a giant rat corpse and move to hurl it into the ooze...only to flip over it and bonk your head in the effort. Your goblin eyes were bigger than your muscles...and the rat is bigger than you.
SGS: Perhaps in response to the rat's unwillingness to be thrown, you stab it in the eyes
Scythes: You put the shin guard on. It's a bit snug, but it works. The breast plate is a bit heavy and you don't throw it very far. Gained Equipped Item: Decorative Shin Guard
Lexius: You fire a bolt of green energy at the ooze (your channeling having been cut short in a spectacular and hilarious way). The bolt causes the Ooze to shudder and shrink back a bit.

Tone and Sneggy: You grab Gloria the rat and run to the ooze which begins to grab out at them.
Silas: You channel your energy into Tone, using him to zap into the ooze....presumably since you did not specify when calling out the spell name as most goblins do. The bolt hits Tone and then carries through to the ooze which shudders and retreats from grabbing the goblins. However, the spell recoil kills Tone with a sharp crack of burning ozone and breaking bones.
Scythes: You drag the breastplate towards the ooze, mewing softly for help from others.
Nal and Drak: You pick of Sneggy and hurl him over the ooze right next to the torch (6). The goblin lands on his head and breaks his neck (1).
Lexius: You presumably cast zap on the ooze, using Drakon as a conduit. The spell goes off perfectly and you shock the ooze more since Silas's attempt. The power of the two spells, significantly shrinks the ooze.
Beeva: You strike a pose

Scythes: (Remember class and trait and equipped item listed please). You bring down the suit of armor and scatter it all over the ground. A swift backhand with your new shield removes one of its fangs (Gained: Rat Shank)
Tone: You run to Nal (the only Bully) and tell him to throw you. The Bully furrows his brow at being ordered around by a scrawny goblin. You receive a blow from the back of his hand
Silas: You throw forth a bolt of energy, but seem to get distracted by something and are off kilter with the shot.
Sneggy: (Teamwork only works when the team plans) You run up to the bully and tug at his arm (1). You wind up on the floor.
Nal: You grab Drakon...and throw him right into the ooze (1). Clearly no goblin was meant to be thrown this turn...that's 3 rolls of a 1 for each. The Ooze grows.
Pyro: This will be tricky since Beeva is the structure of the sling shot...but you manage to snap him enough with the slinger. Beeva yelps and goes through the air to land on the other side of the ooze.
Lexius: You zzap the ooze, reducing it's size a bit.

No miscommunication. I'm just ignoring you. I continue to be confused as to why you did that in the first place as I specifically said I built the contraption first, and then told him to hold the flingy bit. In any case, what's stopping me from building another one for someone else?

I'm not trying to fuck you over, but I'm also not going to allow you do whatever you want just because the character has a wrench and some ability to make things...these aren't warhammer orks/grots

If he isn't, he wants to be thrown over the blob so he can tip the fire bracket on to the blob.
*GENERAL STRATEGY WHICH I THINK WE SHOULD CARRY OUT CAUSE TBH WE'RE TAKING TOO LONG*
Shamans to zzap and use conduit on ooze and goblins respectively.
Goblins, whenever used as a conduit, should charge into an ooze.
Bully must help in this by throwing conduit-goblins into the fray.

Well then, I guess I should stop playing. I'm not being funny or anything, but no matter how far-fetched, I specifically stated that I built it first and then told him to hold the flingy bit. Lexius: Your spell backfires and throws you to the ground
Silas: You zap the ooze through Scythes and the power of the conduit shrinks it greatly (6,6). Too bad no one has a jar.
Drakon: You reappear!
SGS: You remove some gibbly bits and run towards the ooze to throw the innards. It smells the organs and ooze towards you cooing.
Beeva: You knock over the torch, using the contraption on your back to generate enough force to reach the other ooze. The thing screeches as it burns
Sneggy: You Ram your head into the bully. He is not pleased. He reaches out for you and you for some reason allow yourself to be caught. The Bully slams your head into the wall (-1 goblin)

Drakon: You scuttle under the table and tackle the man's ankles. You then uppercut him in the crotch (pictured above). He seems quite phased, but his codpiece nearly shatters your hand (-1 goblin)
Lexius: You conduit through Drakon...well not through him. Into him. He glows brightly as he rockets upwards into the guard's crotch. As soon as he contacts there is a vicious explosion of energy and fire.
Beeva: Yeah...we're not playing this game...someone else must fire it
Scythes and Sneggy: You manage to knock the table on its side...but probably not as planned as the thing falls against the wall.
Tone: You break off one of the table legs and begin gnawing on it...getting nowhere really.
Nal: Having helped the others flip the table...sideways...you scratch your head.
The guards fire another round of arrows. The first two arrows miraculously miss, but the third find Scythes and kills him.
(for the record you guys are not physically strong enough to flip the table over it's end long ways...or throw it for that matter. Scythes IV stays back behind everyone waiting to see what happens to everyone's experiments before trying anything himself. He actually backs up closer to the door they just came through.

Turn 15, 34 goblins remain
Sneggy: You pick up Drakon, who of course is more than willing to be thrown down the hall. The excited goblin disappears through the floor and is replaced with a hole. The squelching sound on from the abyss informs you that there will not be another round for the little fellow (-1 Goblin)
Tone: You run forward and grab a bunch of books, you apparently pull the right ones, because as soon as you get back down...some of the books continue to fall of, and suddenly a viscous blade trap is triggered (Lucky).
Nal: You grab the sword and pull to get it down...it simply swivels out and there is a deep creaking. Suddenly there is a *schwing! and a massive pendulum blade plows through you and the wall (-1 Goblin)
Beeva: Nobody helps you...how sad.
32 goblins remain, 2 Bullies, 4 Tinkerers, 3 Tricksters, 1 Shaman

Drakon VII will aid Pyro in his undertakings..
Pyro
Tinkerer
Trapmaster
Pyro instructs all the Goblins to knock down the bookshelf and break it into pieces. Using the bookshelf and the books, Pyro will build an even bigger catapult on Beeva, the bigger frame also coming with support crutches and wheel so that Beeva doesn't get squashed, and also if he does we'd be able to push it along.
With MechaBeeva built, the party can now simply be expelled out of the level by a great big catapult!

I shall man the catapult to fire the others accross should they be willing.
(if they are unwilling I shall grab somebody random and fire them at the exit to the level.)

See if the blades from that trap can be removed and made into weapons. BUT BE CAREFUL! Don't want to die if it goes back into the ground.

Scythes IV runs up to the swords and jumps over them stopping before the hole. He then pushes the standing torch as hard as he can forward to try to burn the bookshelves in the middle of the room down.

Just an FYI, I'll possibly be without internet for a little while, tho I don't think it'll be too bad. Can auto me or just put me on hold or something, it shouldn't be more than a week tops if at all.
