View Full Version : Santa's Workshop (Mini Tradeoff): The Great White Waagh!

SonsOfStalingrad
20th September 2008, 23:56
Event closed, aftermath

Santaaagh needs some help to spread joy this christmas, to all the boys, girls and various spawns or gender non-specific aliens out there from his loveable Gretchin-Elves, and bring a Waagh right through the cold, white snow. This is the very first Great White Waagh!
Post in the thread here to become a Gretchin-Elf.
Those that show incredible christmas spirit in their work will become Gretchin-Nobz.

Next, PM myself and say what army (including any specifics in colours) you want for christmas, as well as what armies you either have models for or are willing to buy to send to someone else, as well as an address for your gift to be mailed to.

I will match up people's wants and haves as best I can, and fill in one or two myself if there's holes.
You can JUST give if you want, but you can't just receive. You can also give multiple times, though you might not receive as many, depending on number. I will try my best though.

What you do:
You'll be painting ONE model for someone else, for christmas, based on their army. So long as it's the right army, right system, right colour scheme, it can be ANYTHING. From box, converted, scratch built, sculpted, whatever.
Don't be too naughty or you'll be labelled a gnasher squig!

What you get:
The gift of painting a model, and if you ask, a model in return for your own army. If not, a sense of happiness.

What you ask for:
Make it like a christmas list. Mail me similarly to:
Dear Santaaagh, for christmas, I would like -
Undead (Vampire Counts, Warhammer Fantasy)
Orks (Goffs, Warhammer 40,000)
I will be making -
Space Marines, Warhammer 40,000
Orks, Warhammer 40,000

This is a really cool idea, I have to decide whether I have time in between now and Christmas to do some painting, I would hate to put myself on the list and find I don't have the time...

I will have a think about whether or not I want to be part of this.

I would love to but I seriously doubt I'll have time once I begin my recruiting duties. Great idea though SoS and the best of luck to the rest of you though.

On topic. Will we have a choice or price limit to this? Like, will there be a list we can choose off of in case cost is an issue for us? Or are our gifts randomly selected? Again, I am interested, but what I don't want is to find that I somehow end up needing to buy someone a model that becomes out of my price range at that time. Not that I want to be cheap or anything, it is just that I usually live from paycheck to paycheck, and while one week things can be great, the next I have to decide between eating and paying some bill.

Gman13
21st September 2008, 05:48
SoS: How about you post the models people want and we can PM you which one we will take on?

SonsOfStalingrad
21st September 2008, 06:14
Gnomes: There are no limits, it's better to give after all :P
Just don't go doing a freakin' DREADNOUGHT or something unless you really can afford it. x.X In most cases, a simgle blister packed model will suffice, or a single spare model someone can donate.

Ricky: It's open to anyone!

Gman: Santa works in secrecy.

well, there are a lot of GW minis i want to paint, but i really don't want to start a new collection. so in some cases such as V1 challange i be very happy to paint other people's minis only if
1. you don't mind to have a mini with my paint job on it
2. i don't have to pay for that mini, of course i don't mind to pay for the mailing fee
so, if EB consider my paint job as a X'mas present, i be very please to do so.

This sounds sort of fun, I guess if we're accepting Americans, I'll volunteer. What's the worst that could happen? I lose a model? OH GOD! $1.50! SOMEONE GET ME A SHORT LENGTH OF ROPE TO HANG MYSELF!

I don't know if I'm comfortable playing with a model someone else painted for me though, I like the scheme of my army to be coherent. I wouldn't mind having a pretty display model though.

i don't know if this may against the rules of The Great White Waagh! since i am not buying any minis. so, we should better consult the Mr. Santa SOS if this is a proper way to participate / get involved into his workshop.

:prayer: Mr. Santa SOS, can i paint a mini for EB which he mailed to me instead of buying him a new one as a present?

Santaagh! says, If you want to paint something for Edmund that he mails you, that's fine. =) Your gift is your fantastical art skills.

Cap Was Right and Donanton have joined the Waagh!

What you do with your gift once you get it is up to you. Display it with pride, let it follow or lead your forces in battle, whatever! This is simply a christmas celebration of the one thing we all love, with the result being hopefully a few people learn a little more about each other!

I'm definetly intersted in this. Probably only giving, not receiving. And it would be easier if someone could send me a model, but I could buy one that's not a big deal. SO let me think about this I'm not sure if I can yet.

Edit: If anyone's ineterested in Eldar I've got some Eldar models that I would have no problem painting and giving to somebody. If you're interested just post here and I'll see if I have them. I'm willing to paint more than one model e.g. if you want a squad of Dark Reapers I'll paint you up anywhere from 1-5 (if I have time).

I'll be working 12+ hours a day at least 6 days a week, sometimes a few hours on Sundays too, but I'm sure I canfind a few hours in the next 2-1/2 months to paint something up. I'll be buying mine tomorrow, I looked up on the GW site to find a good model. I could just buy the right one but I think it would be more fun to convert them from something else. I got my squigs today, I know you only said one but they came three in a blister, so it's two bomb squigs and a santa squig, that's gonna be fun to make. I figure make him green with a santa hat and toy bag, then send a note saying something like, this is what happens when you feed the elves after 8pm.

On a side note, if you were to model duct tape on a model, what would you use? Green stuff?

Lemartes
7th October 2008, 00:55
Maybe even use little strips of actual duct tape? and just glue it down, then paint over it, it'd give the most realistic texture.

Here is a pic of a very early Brother Talos, who is destined to become part of the ****** ****** chapter (Did I ruin the surprise? )

Anyway he is the rocket launcher marine taking a bath in some simple green to get rid of his awful old paint job. Soon he'll be stripped and ready for a fresh coat.

Got my first order from armorcast in the other day as well, I picked up some of the new cinematic effects pieces, including the "firing rocket" in the picture. I plan on adding one to him to make him stand out a little.

Anyway, more to come in the next few days....this is fun! Christmas for the win.

Vent
13th October 2008, 09:11
Alrighty I've been searching and searching for the right model for my elfly duties... I was given... Vague instructions regarding the space marine I was to paint. So in the end I went for a Veteran Marine. I like the model. Lots of rivets and more plated than normal. I had thought to try and add some chainmail flowing off him, but I've come to the realization that I have a lot of trouble with conversions. Thus, it shall be unconverted less I shank the model...

Undercoating takes place tomorrow. Painting begins the day after. I shall keep the mighty Santa Ork updated... HAIL SANTA!

Ok, so here's the first REAL update on my project, as I have had to put the rocket launcher marine on the back burner for the moment. There were some "difficulties" in the scrubbing of old paint, and I feel like a standard marine was just meh, so I'm going for a more characterful model. Here he is, basecoated, the new Brother Talos. He'll be sporting a banner, and I'm thinking of doing a little detail with some modeling chain as well. Also I have some of the plasma blasts from Armorcast on the way as well so I'm not totally giving up the "firing" idea. Painting is beginning right now, more to come.

I've always loved Gold/bronze on black. Looks really nice. Looking forward to seeing more Don!

Anyway, here is my update. I was asked to paint a Space Marine in Chainmail theme. Now as I've already stated my Green Stuff skills are lacking so I've just gone ahead and painted a mini with no conversions. I still have work to do with him. I think each of the rivets is going to be done in either gold or bronze, opinions would be appreciated, but which every I don't use will be chains color, so I'm leaning towards gold for the bolts and bronze for the chains as I've already got his terminator honors painted gold. Power mace has more coats to come, that's just one coat of foundation blue. But if anyone has any advice please lay it on me! I still have no idea who this is actually going to...

Hmmm, looks good to me Ricky. Only problem with the Grey Knights is that they have such detailed armor that finding a place for freehand is going to be tough... I suggest the book pages, but even that might be better suited to text freehand... What about on the blade itself? Do you think you could do some freehand on that?

Haha! I finally have pics. The melta/chainsword/bolter combi weapon is puzzling me on the red to brass coloring since they are the 2 genersl colors. I'm only using the colors sugested for a berzerker on the GW usa page.

I know there's black sticking out and the left arm isn't started. I'm gonna use the pointy ground bit base that came on the sprues.

The back of the termie lord will be covered by the cape bit so it dosen't need to be perfect.

I also still need to do the trophy racks for the lord's back.

After all the scab red and brazen brass basecoats are done, i'll do the washes and inks and make it look better fast.

Just finished the banner for my Great White Waagh!! marine, I know you haven't chosen a chapter symbol yet for your army Vent, so I wanted to try something somewhat neutral that won't offset anything you do in the future, hence the pretty standard "sword" motif with "S"S" for your army name, and some text to show your army creed. The Aquila is a piece from the etched brass sheet that comes with the citadel basing kit attached with some jeweler's chain. This was my first attempt at a freehand banner, so thanks for the practice! One more piece to add then he's in the mail!

Oh, also, I'm not sure if it has been sent, but if anyone had an address in California, let me know. It is either me, or Sir Arbarac (my best friend) I have a feeling he asked for something chaos. I just did basic Ultramarines.

What kind of marine would you like? Just something with your paint scheme?

Yeah, that'd be fine. Grab a link from my sig if you need pics of my scheme.

Are your guys 'The Sons of Artemis' then? Do they have a chapter symbol?

*runs off to kit-bash something fun*

I have a space marine finished and waiting to be sent off to MI... I have the address, just not the time/money to get to a post office and ship the thing.

Laid some foundation paints last night. I really understand now why it takes so long when your main color isn't the same as your basecoat... The marine I'm working on is mostly green, with a black undercoat. It took forever to lay the green foundation paint everywhere!

Yeah, apologies for my awayness, folks. Anyone who's sent or recieved a mini should report here, bonus points for photos.
And anyone who hasn't got one, say what you were expecting. I'm gonna see if I can chase up the odds and ends.
