View Full Version : Army Of Assassins Project (Ideas?)

Assassins! They are so cool. Quick, agile and skilful.
40k has several skilled assassins but I want to take it to a new level, I want to make an army based on assassins. A convert ops group of mercenaries that sell their skills to the highest bidder why wipe out a commander or general when you can wipe out the whole army. Anyway you get the idea.

My only question is what army could I use for such a project?
Witch-Hunters: They have all of the nasty assassin and Argo-flagellants?
Deamons: ‘Slaanesh’ Appear kill everything then vanish?
Space Marine Scouts: If it weren’t for their lowered skills they’d be a good choice?
Dark Eldar Wych Army: Perfect except Wyches don’t last long in 5th edition, perhaps wait for the new codex to come out next year?
Eldar: They have a few fast units?
Tyranid Genestealer Army: A weird choice I know but think about it... they’re fast, skilled and powerful?
Anyone have any thoughts to kick start my idea?

If the new Dark Eldar codex was coming out soon, I'd say wait for them as they'd probably be the best. But, failing that, Eldar units like Warp Spiders (the whole, appear disappear thing) and Banshees (for the speed and power weapon "instant kills") could work the theme prety well. Also, the look of eldar armour, one all those gem stones are filed away could look pretty assassin like. Well besides the big honkin' helmets.

hehe, those helmets remond me of tikis :D...anyway, DE would be best, but the space circus(Eldar) would work till they come out. Though I think it'd be kinda cool if you combined various units from the different armies.. You'd have the Inquisition for elites, DE/sniper scouts for troops, eldar for fast attck....not sure what would work well for heavy support though..

If you can dig up a copy of Codex: Assassins, it has several scenarios for the use of assassins as a primary force. Not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for, and of course you'll need your opponent to agree to its use, but then I doubt an assassin army would ever be anything other than a scenario force.

Also, said assassin armies consist of like....4 models, one from each main temple, I'd think.

Why is the assassin a coward?
wartyg
17th November 2008, 09:16
because usually assasins are usually just cowardly killing others to protect themselves
or get money they rarely attack when outnumbred only the best stand and fight
but thats what i think anyways

I reckon Eldar Rangers and Pathfinders would be better assassin choices - they're outcasts from the craftworlds, after all.

Doesn't seem very cowardly to me... Seems sensible. Why throw yourself into a fight if you're unsure of the outcome?
Assassins assassinate people, and they wouldn't be able to do that if they make like some anime nutcase and try to face down whole rooms of people. The best assassins would get in, do the job, and get out through the path of least resistance.

Wolf scouts, space wolves
They are not the low level innitiates, but instead some of the sneakiest and deadliest vets of the sm army

Assassins don't fight for themselves by definition! Anyhoo, would you say an Royal Marine Commando Sniper is a coward? He gets paid, he won't expose his position to an advancing enemy and will kill to protect himself!

because usually assasins are usually just cowardly
Furthermore, a coward certainly wouldn't be able to infultrate deep within enemy lines and take out key personell with minimal equipment, no support, surrounded on all sides, and having to survive on wits and guts.

There have been a couple of Assassins codices. First was released in 2nd Edition, and then one for 3rd Edition. The 3rd Edition codex was woeful - bland and terrible.
These Codices gave details for the 4 main temples and some scenarios to play involving assassins.
They will not give you lists for an Assassin army, such things just would not exist anyway.

for the points, that is utterly rediculous. your looking at essentially the same thing as a sm scout, but that sm scout costs 6-7 points more, doesn't wound on 4+ in cc, and can't hit and run. The only upside to scouts is the t4 over 3, but you also have bs 4 over 3, so its a fair trade off, and the 4+ regular save is moot when they have a 3+ cover save. Make them 15pts, that would be more balanced.

Seen as that they have no way to survive close combat or flamers, or have other special weapons, or have average strenght and toughness. Or maybe the fact that Sisters of battle get far more things for maybe one more point. Hmm, no sir, I think they are overpriced as they are.
EDIT
I think the army should have Hit and Run as a special ability
