Actually, it's not really a 101, it's more of a cry for help.

I've decided that once I've painted up my Orc and Goblins (which I've now started on) I'm going to collect High Elves, with the aim being to try and keep it fairly cheap for the mainstay, though I don't mind going a little over the budget of around £200 for the army. This means that it's got to be mainly plastic, as a nice unit of Metal Swordmasters, even from an Indi stockist will set me back nearly £50, which I just can't bring myself to spend more than once in the army. This realistically gives me around £150 to build the rest of the army if I were to include those Swordmasters (21 strong).

The Battalion looks a good space to start. For £37 I can pick up 16 Archers, 16 Spearmen, 8 Silver Helms and a Bolt Thrower. The issue being, that looking over the Silver Helm Entry in the army book I couldn't ever see myself using them as they're really only 7 points cheaper than the Dragon Princes (when you factor in the shield). The Dragon Princes are one of the best units in the game and with an extra Ws, A and Ld, as well as the Dragon Armour I can't see why you'd take Silver Helms. To buy the Spears, Bowmen and Eagles Claw Seperate would set me back £36, so all of a sudden the Batalion doesn't seem that great. New plan ...

Setting out the army is always the issue I have, my Orcs and Goblins started life as a whole Savage Orc army which has slowley been infused with Common Goblins, War Machines, "normal" Orcs and even Night Goblins as it's become more rounded. However it's always worked on the basis of having a nice sold infanty core which can take abit as well as give it out, the Magic Phase has mainly been used to remove RIP spells and the shooting one isn't much to crow about. Infact even the movement phase is just walking forward when the army wants to leaving me only really the combat phase to try and do well in.

With the High Elves I'm having issues trying to balance out what I'd like to do though, part of me wants to have 3 Solid Infantry Blocks (2 spearmen, 1 Swordmasters) to hold the line, some archers, bolt throwers etc and sprinkeled in with a little magic, if I were to be looking at something like that then the list would end up being something like below;

Archmage - Lv4 - Silver Wand - Ring of Fury - Scroll - 330
Mage - Lv2 - Jewel of Dusk - Scroll - 170
Noble - BsB - Lance - Dragon Armour - Shield - Barded Elven Steed - Battle Banner - 238

21 Spearmen - Full Command - 214
21 Spearmen - Full Command - 214
10 Archers - Muscian - 115
10 Archers - Muscian - 115

21 Swordmasters - Full Command - Banner of Sorc - 405
6 Shadow Warriors - 96

3 Bolt Throwers - 300
1 Eagle - 50

Army Total - 2247

I like the army, however I'm worried that it is just a little bit too much of a gunline. With up to 18 S4 Eagles Claws Shots as well as 26 S3 Archer/Shadow Warrior Shots (usually Cursed of Arrowed Attractioned on what I want dead) as well as 10/12 Power Dice in the magic phase I'm just worried. However I've never really had a gunline which can actually hold it's own in combat, especially with the Swordmasters. Another minor issue I can see is that I'm not using anything really special, no Dragon, no Dragon Princes, only one of the special units. No Magic Armour or Weapons just you know, it's a fair amount of models, which I kinda like. But, not to keep repeating myself I rather like something like;

Prince - Star Dragon - Star Lance - Armour of Caledor - Talisman of Loec - 595
Mage - Lv2 - Elven Steed - Scroll - Jewel of Dusk - 182
Mage - Lv2 - Elven Steed - Ring of Fury - 40

10 Archers - Muscian - 115
10 Archers - Muscian - 115

6 Reavers - Bows (no spears) - Muscian - 121
6 Reavers - Bows (no spears) - Muscian - 121
6 Reavers - Bows (no spears) - Muscian - 121
6 Dragon Princes - Lances - Shields - 180
6 Dragon Princes - Lances - Shields - 180
6 Dragon Princes - Lances - Shields - 180

3 Eagles - 150

Army Total - 2247

Now I've been doing some maths, the first list will cost around £180 to build so is within budget, however the 2nd is around £220 which is abit more than I wanted to spend, however I know that it's mainly due to the cost of the Dragon Princes with those 3 units setting me back over £100 :(

I know that I could easilly enough combine those lists, but I don't think that mix and matching will always work, so this is where I'm opening it up, wtb help please, all comments welcome :)

I like this list better, but I'm just not a fan of all cavalry/cavalry heavy lists

For the characters, I have no idea what their gear does, but a level 4, and level 2, and a BSB never hurt anyone. Core choices are pretty good, but if you can shave points off of anything, bump the spearmen to units of 25. From what I have seen before, High Elves work best as a multiple small unit (MSU) army, with spearmen blocks as the exception. I would split the swordmasters into two units and hide a mage in each.

Shadow warriors are annoying to play against. A good small unit for marchblocking and could maybe take a rank bonus away before the unit reaches combat. You can't go wrong with bolt throwers, easily the best rare choice for High Elves. Eagles are even more annoying to fight than shadow warriors. Use it to redirect charges, march block, or even charge a flank to help out a spearmen block.

Pretty good list. I would split the swordmasters into two groups, drop the banner of sorcery, and bump the spearmen units up to 25.
