I was looking over GW's site for various models and sets to build up my army...and I was looking at the strike force for comparison...it lists a Space Marine Commander (he looks to be equipped with claws and maybe a pistol)...but as far as I can find...their is no "Commander"....is this supposed to be the same as a Captain, or am I just looking in the wrong spot?

Yeah that'll be the Captain model, comes with tons of weapons! Some of wich you can use for tactical squads and other characters. So a good kit to have.

this is correct...
in the older SM codex (and still in the current stand alones) chapter masters and captains were part of the same unit entry, labelled Commander... this model can be used for even a chapter master or captain, or even a veteran marine

Ok cool, that's awesome if I could use it as a master (until I decide to get Marneus or something)...other than that it's a pretty good looking set....but I'm not sure I want to commit to that many vehicles, especially if the Landraider doesn't come with redeemer/crusader options. Also I'm not sure I want a whirlwind too soon in the future. A rhino and vinidicator would be nice though.
I suppose that the battle force would be a better option and allow me to use the extra money to get which LR I want, and the command squad form the strike force.
I guess I'm posing the question of whether people think it's worth it to get something like the strike force. Or if the battle force with some augmentations, or just a kit by kit build up is best?

You will spend less in the long run if you go with the Strike Force. You can find plenty of good uses for the standard Land Raider and the whirlwind will come in handy for the times when you are outnumbered by a horde army (which is most of the time) unless you play against MEQ's exclusively. You could also find willing buyers for the models you dont want to use and get your money back to buy the kits you do actually want. It's really up to you, I dont think anybody can tell you what to buy because nobody is going to play the same way you will.

You are a wise one. It's just hard to justify the extra money for vehicles I'm not certain about. I suppose I could get it and maybe get converter bits for LR and Rhinos/Razorbacks...Should I get Strike Force and just pick up a regular scout squad and the assault squads of my choosing (to make up the difference between battle force and strike squad, seeing as how I'd like more scouts and some assaulters)?
Also as mentioned I could use the Strike Force's Captain as a Chapter Master or some other HQ/Elite...so I could then use my AoBR Captain as a Captain.
It'll set me back on getting a start on some nids, but I suppose it's looking better. Then Again...I should probably finish the Art Institute I'm designing before I worry about free time.
Lee Harvey, as always thanks. I'll really sit down and think about the strike force.

I'm thinking about getting the strike force after I get the AOBR box and I too would prefer a Landraider Redeemer or crusader over the standard land raider. So I was wondering, can you get a land raider redeemer/crusader upgrade sprue? I have only seen a Terminus Ultra upgrade sprue.

there is no lrc/lrr upgrade sprue. You'll have to just put up with the standard LR I'm afraid.

I bought the Strike force, as I've said in other posts. I'm going to use the savings and my hobby store coupons to buy the another LR sometime later, but I'll get the crusader/redeemer kit, that way using my magnets, I can use any two of the three interchangeably

Exactly what my plan is too. Although I might try my hand at making one of these (http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1180096_Space_Marines_Datasheet_-_Land_Raider_Ares.pdf)
