How Many 40K Armies Are There?
I ask this all the time, but I'm still not really sure. I want to know how many separate army lists there are! For example.
Space Marines
-Black Templar
-Space Wolves
-Blood Angels
That's four! Salamanders used to have their own army list. Is it still valid?
Dark Eldar
-Wych Cult
That's 2 more!
Eldar
Eldar used to have different Craftworlds that gave you different lists to play do they still? I've heard they don't exist anymore and are no longer valid lists. Is there just a list somewhere of every valid Army List?
So based on the specific army forums.
Chaos Daemons
Chaos Space Marines
-Nurgle
-Slanesh
-Tzeentch
-Khorne
Daemonhunters
-Grey Knights
-Radical Daemon Hunters
Dark Eldar
-Wych Cults
Eldar
Imperial Guard
Necrons
Orks
Space Marines
-Black Templar
-Space Wolves
--13th Company of Space Wolves
-Blood Angels
-Dark Angels
Tau
Tyranids
Witch Hunters
-Sisters of Battle
My initial guess would be that at some point Codex armies were deemed the only allowable and everything that was in something like "Armageddon" was said no-no to. I might have even read that somewhere...
Am I missing anything off my list?

Dark Angels.
Including Wych Cults as a separate list is a bit of a stretch IMO.

Re: How Many 40K Armies Are There?
Added! Is that the last one?
Also, I sort of agree but it made my point look better if I had something other than SM! I dunno, a couple things move around warriors become elites or something. It sort of matters.
There were Speed Kults of Orks or something too a while back. I don't remember how divergent they were.

Re: How Many 40K Armies Are There?
There used to be an Ork list for snake bites but it is no longer legal. As for races that have been completely phased out (I like to refer to them as "The Forgotten") there are the Lost and the Damned and the Zoats. Also, I didn't know that the Salamanders had a separate list- what edition was it?
I'm Irish and proud of it.
I play Marines and Orks. No I'm not a newb. I just got very lucky when AoBR came out.

Re: How Many 40K Armies Are There?
It was a very minor change, I think only a couple entries were changed. It was during...3rd? It was in a little codex type book called "armageddon" and that's where Black Templar rules were first found too.

Yeah, this is the sort of thing I'm talking about. Are those two still legal or have they been phased out?Originally Posted by bigfishboy

Re: How Many 40K Armies Are There?
since we seem to only be counting legal and playable armies, do to Chaos armies count. Technically, they're all Black Legion now unless you play one of the 4 cults.Originally Posted by Locke Carnelia

Also, under the Inquisition tab:
Sisters of Battle
Witchhunters
Daemonhunters
Grey Knights
Grey Knights: 6/4/10 Alpha Legion (3rd Ed rules): 5/1/4

Don't forget Radical Daemonhunters too. They can be classed as different, as they work totally differently to any other Inquisition army.

Having never been tempted to play Chaos, I don't even know. Do the four cults play differently and have different lists? I remember plague marines having 5 toughness...(I think) and some sorcerer type marines having two wounds but I don't remember how that came about at all.Originally Posted by Gkjester
Yes, I mean legal playable armies.

Re: How Many 40K Armies Are There?
Yes, Chaos is divided up into:
Black Legion (face it guys, you know it's true) and then the pure versions of the 4 cult armies.
Nurgle
Slanesh
Tzeentch
Khorne
Grey Knights: 6/4/10 Alpha Legion (3rd Ed rules): 5/1/4

And these all have separate lists or at least different Marine statlines?Originally Posted by Gkjester

Different marine and terminator statlines and unit restrictions if you go pure.

Re: How Many 40K Armies Are There?
Not exactly what I meant when I posed the question but for now good enough. Later I may weed out things that are basically "Just like the regular but you can't field unit X".Originally Posted by Gkjester

Black Legion - field any unit in the codex with no restrictions
Or one of the 4 pure cult legions.

I answered your question.
Each of the Cult armies has unique core marines with specific stats and special rules.
Grey Knights: 6/4/10 Alpha Legion (3rd Ed rules): 5/1/4

Re: How Many 40K Armies Are There?
But they use exactly the same codex and rules, so I wouldn't class them as distinct armies. Now they only exist for those who remember the old background and want to create a themed army. I reckon Wych Cults have more of a right to be in the list as at least they have unique choices and move units around the force org. chart (although, by that logic, so would every Ork and SM character who does the same).Originally Posted by Gkjester

So, basically, only stand-alone codeci count then? That is basically what you all are saying.Originally Posted by CrazyTriangle

all fall under the same codex with restrictions, "if you have this, then you can't have this".
