Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
Wait, I thought our entries were supposed to have been painted FOR the contest. Why were so many of us busting our asses to get it done on time when all we had to do was submit our best model? (Trust me, it would not have been this one!) In fact, I had read the rules as the work in progress shot was supposed to have the picture with the name on it in order to prove it was done FOR THE CONTEST not the finished product.
RAW vs. RAI?
Actually not sure why we had to have a work in progress shot at all.
Hmm. From the votes I would not have placed anyway, but this is extremely disappointing.
I don't take issue with a post count of 2 winning the contest in the least. Gold Demon winners want to pop in and win our contests whenever we have them, ok, sure, what can I do about that?Just to re-iterate that #18 is very much within our rules for the competition - whether they are a new member, or a member who has been here for years, should not detract from entry either.
By all means we will run further painting competitions after this, and I will take various things into consideration for when that happens - your suggestions are of course welcome - perhaps in a new topic, though?
I think what sucks is that it seemed to at least me, and I'm guessing a lot of people, that we were supposed to paint a model FOR this contest, and I'm guessing almost all of us did. Some of us had to make sacrifices to make that happen. This contest implied from the start that you were painting for it. I'll eat my socks if I'm the only person here who thought that. Had I been able to simply submit my best model, I'd have done that (and garnered a shit load more votes I can tell you that), and spent the two days of trying to knock this thing out as fast I could with my family instead.
EDIT: Also, come to think of it, seems strange if the above was not the intent of the contest why the first five entries were given little prizes. First five people to take a picture of their best work and send it in? Just don't get it.

Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
The first five thing was to get people to get on and get to work. Plus aside from that it doesn't matter much, eh? Should have been fun whether you take the prize or not!
I feel like if there's going to be complaints and such, perhaps they shouldn't be handled here...this is a place of merriment and fun. PMs are for handling problems.

Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
Of course that was the intention of the competition, but I did not write that in the rules. It was discussed in the topic, but not written clearly in the rules themselves. I apologise, but at least it is something to learn from for future competitions.
I have tried very hard to get this competition underway and it is very frustrating to have criticism like that - to get some quite frankly awesome prizes for a competition which is free to enter? Maybe I won't try in future.
I think everyone should be proud of what's been submitted - some of the stuff I was very surprised at how much of a step up some people had made in their quality of painting in order to enter the competition - even if they perhaps won't get in the top 3, at least it gave them something to try damn hard for, and to aim high.
Would be nice to have discussion about some of the entries in here now though. You can of course PM me if you wish.

Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
I don't think anyone is blaming you Andy.
However, please consider why people are upset. As you've said, many of our upper tier of painters doubled their efforts in order to not only show off their stuff, but also go into contention for a prize. Now they are getting trumped by a Golden Demon entry which just uploaded its picture without any of the time constraint of the competition.
Anyway, sorry if this gets you down in the dumps for running a competition, but overall I think it was a very thorough job setting it up - and now we know what to do for the next one!

I think MG has summed it up very well. No doubt there's many people who feel similar, now as to not undermine the efforts that Andy has gone to in order to get this contest underway, shall we, a forum, a collective, move on?

Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
Seriously. Everyone has loved this competition, and I, as one of the low vote count entries, has said so many times. However, this was not a legal contract, when presented with something like #18 (maybe #22? I'll be interested to see where that comes from as well), you could have easily said, "Sorry, this is not the intent of this contest. Please feel free to join our community and submit a model next time."Originally Posted by MGRockwell

EDIT: Honestly, I think Ana should remove herself (and anyone else who submitted entries that were contrary to the intent of the event) from the contest and save Andy the angst. This is on her (him) more than you. Think about it. You're a gold demon winning painter, and you drop in on a homey 40k forum's contest and snag their prize? Skills and talent can not be too highly praised, but, where's the honor in that?

Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
I posted up a quick thread for space for discussion on format, so as not to clog this one up: painting-competition-format-t68662.html.Originally Posted by edmundblack
It would be nice if this thread would revert back to discussion over the qualities of the models in the competition instead of the format of the competition. Sorry if I helped to spam the shit out of this topic.

Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
How about we talk the lower quality entrys, and what we like about them rather than slag them off?
As its very easy to criticise, espcially when the critic didn't enter.

Perhaps since all is said and done, we can actually discuss the contest and not the problems?
Andy you did a wonderful job orchestrating, as usual. And now we know for next time what we want to change, eh? Anyway, I'm happy to see so much good work for our compatriots. As well my pm offer stands for your consideration.

Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
Okay guys, this is the "line", MGR has done the right thing and started a separate topic, so if we could go back to talking about the entries please.
Constructive criticism on those outside the top 6 or so would be particularly useful I think.

Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
I think 1 would look wicked sharp on the table. Up close I think the shading lacks from blending a bit, but I very much appreciate the painter taking the close-ups. All to easy to back the camera back a bit and let distance blur the highlights for you. Paint seems just a tad too goopy and the layers too defined to be a contender for placing. Nice to see a cavalry model represented though, and ambitious in the intended time frame. It's the only one right?Originally Posted by Novasry

Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
OK, one thing which has jumped right out at me - mold lines. When entering anything for a painting competition, make sure they all get removed.
When painting, make sure your colours are clean, crisp and you use clean water and a good brush. Building up layers is the way to go about blending and making colours stronger, especially things like metallics.
Just some minor pointers.

i forgot to take the mold lines off the model i was going to enter (didn't get it finished) so planned on taking pictures from certain angles that would make it invisibleOriginally Posted by edmundblack

Well, you could, but as part of the overall aim to improve, get them all off. It also has the very good benefit of you really getting to know the mini, all it's nuances and how it's been sculpted. Getting to know your mini is a very good idea before painting it.
