Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
I was fairly sure I knew which was going to win after looking through them, however when I got more down the list another 2 popped up which were brilliant, 3 of them are a much higher standard than the rest.

There were 5 that stood out for me, although I know now which 3 I'll be voting for.

i liked 8, 9, 18, and 34.
going to vote 18, ultimately the best paintjob. i'm kinda pissed at myself for not getting my conversion painted. i think i would have had a chance had i spent a good amount of time on it.

After much deliberation I finally went with 16, 18, and 22. Two of those really stood out for me, and the other one had a close fought fight with half a dozen others.

This. I really struggled here. I was rushed to finish it, let alone take good pictures. Paint was still drying, literally, when I was setting up to shoot. My entry's depth just completely washed out. Plus I picked a very, very bad model to enter.Originally Posted by WindlordRyu

Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
O.M.G this is so difficult for me...what to choose? I have 13 entries that stood out to me for different reasons. At one side I have the ones that are heavily converted, of which there is no short supply here. Then theres the neat ones. Where as their not eavy metal they are still far above tabletop quality and last is the effects, like the lighting....O.M.G this is so anoying for me!
Im not sure wether to be really biased or not. At one side I love chaos and I love all the convertions. Im hoping that if I pick them I get to see more of them in a blog somewhere. But then...OM.G some of the other are still soooo good! arrrr +Bangs head on computer desk hoping that something usfull will come out of it+

Holy hell #18...nice work there.
I'm very impressed with a lot of these...picking my third choice was incredibly difficult. So congratulations to everyone who submitted.

Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
Yes, 18's obviously taking 1st. Looks a bit like a ringer. Have to say that while 8 is a nice job, and is going to take second place, I'm not taken with it like most seem to be. It looks nice, especially at first glance, but on closer examination, mostly just clean. The flowers, sword, robe, hair, face, halo, etc... are actually all very basic. In fact, the sword even looks kind of sloppy. The model clean and well done to be sure, but not an outlier. I think the photo really helps here: it's farther away than most, taken with a good camera, and the light's great.
For instance, I'm not sure that 8 is painted any better than 33, which has a shit dog picture.
I'm surprised 35 doesn't have a single vote. It's painted far better than either of the above, both of which have votes. This is again I think where perhaps painting contest naivete' comes in to play. This was a very poor choice to enter: boring little human with no oomph or glamor vs. Celestine, Harlequins, Chaos/Astartes fandom etc... Slightly strange, totally massive, base doesn't help I guess. Perhaps people aren't making it all the way to the bottom?
I like 16, 22 and 30. Someone with the photo set up and freehand skills of 18 does not need my help to win!
EDIT: I should make a quick clarification to the above: I'm surprised that #22 was allowed as a valid entry. It's basing seems to significantly stretch the size requirement, and there are two distinct figures included. It's more of a scene than a model. That said, it was obviously allowed, and that being the case, it deserves to place, because it's fucking awesome. It's far better than any non-18 entry.

Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
For me it breaks down to 4, 8, 9, 16, 18, and 22 being 'contenders.' 8 and 9 struggle to be in this category, but the face on 8 is awesome and 9 looks a LOT better in its last picture.
My entries that I feel deserve recognition are 21, 31 (Respect the effort, but so overdone it looks bad.),
33, 35 (Clean but so bland).
So I suppose its really between 4, 16, 18 and 22... And since 18 and 22 are both crazy beautiful, that makes me have to cut 4 or 16... The back of 4 looks a LOT worse than the front, and the back of 16 looks better than the front. So kudos for doing the best source lighting in the competition, entry 4, but I guess you're cut.
Leaving me 16, 18, and 22.
-edit- For the record, I kept a tab open with each entry I thought was good, then flicked between them to compare directly. I think everyone should do this, as it lets you actually see every miniature in the competition before saying to yourself 'wow, this is getting my vote!' Not to mention some look better without comparisons; The blends on say, 8 look a lot worse compared to, say, 22 than they do in a vacuum.

I'm surprised 33 does not have more votes. Brighter pics would have helped, but it looks bloody awesome.

Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
33? 33 looks like the person spend two weeks painting then hit the deadline and slapped some paint on what they hadn't finished. The skulls flat out look BAD and the horns are very iffy. The rest of the mini is awesome, and I am actually loving the hyper contrast on the white cloth but... Its unfinished.
For me, when I'm judging a mini, I judge by looking at the entire thing. Add together the best and worst parts of the mini and how you would rate them on a 10 point scale sort of thing. Drop the ball on one part of your mini and it hurts it overall.

35 was the one that stood out to me. Sure it's only a guardsmen and ork head but it's a damn good guardsmen and ork head.
Also went for 8 and 18 as well and I don't think I need to say why.

Re: Painting Competition: Discussion Topic
I agree with everything here in spades, until the word "awesome". I think this is a nicely painted model, at least as good as 8 which is getting such good press, but it's not great. The strange hyper highlight on the sword and cloth is not doing it for me.Originally Posted by '
I think a vote for 8 is a vote for Citadel, not the painter. I'm not coming down on this model, I just don't think people are really looking at it critically. Celestine just seems to get an auto-pass whenever she doesn't look bad. "Hey look, another Celestine, and this one has angel wings!" Again, this is a nicely painted model, I just don't think it's great.Originally Posted by foamy666

My votes were 18, 21, and 22
!8 and 22 are gorgeous and were easy choices. I voted for 21 sheerly because I thought it was awesome.
Is it bad that I instantly recognized the painter of 33 within 2 seconds of seeing it?
