    Dreadnought

I like Dreadnoughts, or rather I LOVE them! (for painting, building and looks)

But I don't see a army with more then one of these often and I can see why but if I wanted to try that what would be the best mixture of Dreadnought options and backup units?

I'm trying out a wolfwing style army, three units of terminators, a land raider and two dreadnoughts. I'll let you know how it goes.

The answer to your question depends on a few factors, as Dreadnoughts are such a varied group.

First of all, what Dreadnoughts and weapon options do you have available and are you limiting yourself to these model? If so that drastically decreases your options, making easier to pick a few out. If you plan to buy some Dreadnought, disregard this criteria.

Secondly, what codex are you playing? From codex to codex, the Dreadnought options drastically change. Knowing what you have available and where in the FOC it is will help us find a good fit for you.

Thirdly, what roles do you find yourself neediing filled in your lists commonly, or a specific list if you prefer? Dreadnought can fill many different roles, and like all units should have a specific use in mind when they are added to the list. Therefore the role you intend them for will guide your choices.

    Some examples:
A good Dreadnought to fill a role of shock unit and tank killer is an Ironclad Dreadnought in a Drop Pod for C:SM. Due to the Drop Pod, the Ironclad will be delivered close to the enemy, and its melta weapons are useful for killing vehicles early. AV13 extends its killing as well.

An effective light vehicle hunter is a Dreadnought with two Twin-Linked Autocannons. It shreds AV10 and 11 and is cheap. Also because of its range, it can stay in the rear of the army away from shorter ranged ant-tank weapons. This variant makes it into a large amount of Marine lists, and is usally run in pairs or trios.

For a codex specific option, a Furioso or Death Company Dreadnought with Blood Talons puts out a lot of hurt against squads like Marines or Orks. It can be devastating and is an effective choice.

Finally, a cheap and effective all arounder is a basic Dreadnought with Multi-Melta, DCCW, and Heavy Flamer. It can pop tanks, Str 10 makes it great for squishing HQs and the HF makes it a valuable tool against hordes.

There's some stuff to think about. Feel free to ask about specifci types or list help.

    Cheers.

There are several ways to get large dread forces.

    SM
Master of the Forge lets you take 6 dreads 3 elite 3 heavy
    BA - 11 dreads
    3 Elite
    5 Troop
    3 Heavy
    Chaos - 6 dreads
    3 Elite
    3 Heavy (Defilers)
    Orks - 11 Dreads
    2 - Big Meks
    2 - Deff's as troops
    9 - Kanz as heavies

I love dreads too, the only config I don't have as mentioned above is the BA config. You can also take 4 dreads in SQ using Bjorn as an HQ but not a big fan of the 270 point 13 armor model.

Oh Bjorn how I love thee. I have a wolves list with Bjorn and 3 venerable dreads (dccw, heavy flamer, assault cannon). Four venerables walking across the table tends to be a big psychological factor. Which means the rest of your army gets to do what it does almost unmolested. Then there are the games where you make people cry (I had Bjorn make 17 invul saves vs penetrating melta shots in one game, the 18th one got him but still).

The only thing that scares me in that list is the 20 deathcompany with the reclusiarch.

Dreadnoughts are cool, and I regularly go for the TLAutocannon or Plasma Cannon option. The TLAc is the consummate all-rounder for range, but will obviously struggle with any CC and AV13/14. Plasma Cannons are just too cool to not have, full stop.

Well I got one of those Venerable Dreads the other day and had lots of fun with it so I think Ironclad is the next one I should get?

Also I play Templars but I also am switching to Vanilla Marines (or rather I want to make a army with some of those really sweet chapter masters).

I often find myself in need of a tank killer that's what I often want my Dread to do, that and horde killer.

Also, are you open to using Forgeworld models and rules. Get the assault droppod for your space marines and then put an Ironclad in it!

2,750 Codex Marines (Deepstrike themed army)
    2,250 Deathwing
    ~2,000 Black Templar (mech)
    ~1,850 Spacewolves (footslog)
    ~1,650 Tyranid

Sadly my experience is quite the opposite. It is more along the lines of long range first turn missile shot lucks a 6, fail invulnerable, rolls an immobile putting Bjorn squarely out of the game, venerable reroll, look its a 6 now kaboom!
