It'll be alright on the Knight XIII - Page 15

Soo, yeah. I painted a Grey Knight Terminator as I had a major itch to do so. So I thought "why not give it the full beans?" So I did, and really worked on the metallics and the details. Some of the gold didn't come out 100%, and I think there's parts of the hammer which isn't as I'd envisaged, but the dude overall is, I think, the best Grey Knight I've ever painted (even if I say so myself).

Now, there's two sets of photos as I took one set without flash and one with. Can't decide which one shows it off best, so I'll post up both wherever I can.

    Front:

    Left side:

    Right side:

    Rear:

    Details:

    And just because:

He took a goodly number of hours to do, and to be honest I wouldn't like to add them all up. Still, I think he was worth it. Haven't sprayed him yet, and to be honest I've very hesitant to do so as I don't want him to lose his sheen and go all cloudy.

So, aside from the minor niggles that I mentioned before, any thoughts etc on this dude?

Very well done! Deserving of an email to GW, they will show it off in a Whats New update

I dig the detail work, freehand stuff. Even up close in the pictures everything looks clean and specific... not like some of the haphazard scribbles you often see.

Come to think of it, everything still looks good in a close up pic... usually that is where you loose the illusion of detail and see just how bad the paint job was. Not in this case.

Now I want to get a box of Paladin even more than before...

    Thanks chaps!

The detail work is something I really tried to pay attention to. I think it's what can make or break a miniature, as well as how all the pieces come together.

I doubt they'd feature it though - this is one of the 2nd generation (and best in my view) metal GKTs from their previous Codex release.

Really nice! I love the basing especially, how is that done? Resin base or plain ol' painted slate? It looks great either way, adds a perfect finishing touch to what is an awesome paintjob.

    Thanks Andy!

It's slate, as are all my GKs. It's a "free sample" from a garden centre. I drilled pins into all their feet and then drilled holes through the slate and often into the plastic base underneath. Glued it on with super glue and dry brushed it twice with skull white. The snow is the GW snow flock mixed with PVA glue into a thick paste and applied to where I wanted it before having a dusting of more flock over the top. Let it dry and tap off the excess, tidy it up and paint Midnight Blue onto the rim before giving it a blast of Purity Seal to nail the flock down.

    Looking very good Mr B!

What did you use for the snow - kind of looks like the army painter's snow to me.

If you want to redo the gold and liked how I did it my my first dread then just a few light layers of devlin mud over gold is all it takes.

Thanks MC. The only gold area that's really bugging me is the skull central in his chest. The rest is OK, but I reckon some delicate dry brushing could resolve that easily enough. And this hasn't seen any devlan mud at all, it's all blended coats and thinned ink washes.

(and yes, your gold is very nice too MC, don't mean to sound critical of it)

Shows how much of a smoker I am that, upon first glance, I thought he had a packet of Marlboros in his shirt pocket. Then I realised Grey Knights don't have shirts, or pockets...just shields and heraldry.

Morning derpiness aside, very nice. I love how the different metals came out

Like this? One (and that's him). Otherwise, I've 26 to a good Table Top standard, another 11/12 (can't remember) to a so-so standard and some waiting for attention.

Thanks Noisy Nightmare ( ), I'm chuffed with how they came out too. That's a lot of layering and blending and washing and analysing and head scratching involved there. And now it leaves me with an even bigger headache.
