Storm guardian vs Dire Avenger
I was making my army list for ard boyz when someone told me storm guardian should never be on a list.
I would like some opinion about it ,
So ,
10 storm guardian , 2 flamer , 1 lock , destro , spear , for 130 pts
or
10 DA , exarch , power weapon ,shimering shield , blade and defend for 177 pts
I have the feeling (might be wrong) than those 3 flamers (with one str 5) might hurt more swarm ennemies than my 27 shot of catapult.
I dont plan to have a farseer for doom and guide so he is staying out of the equation. I m sure both unit have their strenght and weakness , but i dont see those guardian as not firring a list for ard boyz.

I think most people dis on the guardians because they don't like the BS3 nor the 5+ armor, and that means compared to avengers they do less and survive less. but most do not factor in that gaurdians are not ment to stand in the same shoes as an avenger.
as well because of the 5+ save, most tend to view storm guardians as a suicide unit, similar to fire dragons.
- with the triple flamer setup storms work pretty much the same as dragons just against the opposite target type
In my experience, opponents tend to underestimate eldar guardians (both defender and storm types)
-cocky opponents tend to brush off the impending threat of guardians because their weak stat line means it takes little effort to kill them, so these opponent focus more on meatier threats like grav tanks
- though you do have to pay attention, some opponents take the opposite approach to target priority, killing off 'easy' targets rather than tackling big things first.
me I've never really liked avengers and when I'm not using jetbikes as troops I prefer guardians since I don't think the cost hike for the avengers extra BS & 6 inches, I usually take a farseer which can guide the guardians to make up for the hit ratio and with a wave serpent getting gaurdians into shooting range isn't a factor either, only real issue is their save but most times the wave serpent solves this by disembarking the squad into area terrain. so I really only chose avergers when I'm looking for the cheapest way to pick up another wave serpent for fire support.

my army has 3 troops choices 10 man dire advenger, jet bikes and rangers.
there is a element of "that would be a cool paint job" over game playing (e.g. the rangers in the largly mech/reserve force).
this choice can depend on the rest of your army. If you have 4/5 troops the storm guardian could make a viable suicide unit as long as they cripple their intended target then they have done their job.
however in this role have you considered yariel. I use him in the same suicide role. against hords charge in the pile in move crouds your victim around him then big eye template. he is alittle more versatile in that his spear can put the hurt on vehicles.
power fists splat him. high invunerables he will struggle with. he either gets instant killed or walks through games unscathed. his doomed rule is not a issue. as long as he has put the hurt on things the rest of my army will struggle with jobs a good un.
If you have less cheap squads of 5 DA I have often seen (often used as a upgrade for a falcon to make it scoring)
DA exarch abilities/war gear defend and shimmer also make them more surviable in the low number of scoring situation.
as ever it's nemisis verses tournie with eldar
nemisis
If you know you know your going against a horde then they are a sound choice,as are scorpions
tournie
you don't know who you are fighting then more flexible choices are better ( but harder to find in our dex, though that is as it should be)

Yriel is an option since he costs about the same, does about the same amount of damage and dies about as easy... well he's harder to kill, but he's Eldar so he's easy overall.
And you like Autarchs and he is one. You may want to look at him seriously. The Yriel bomb can be fun to use on people.
And the model rocks!

Ive only used the SG a couple times, but have been pleased with the triple flamer (2 flamer + warlock with template spell) results, especially against blobs of guardsmen or troops.
I do love me some DA though, and have had some devastating results with a guided unit bladestorming a doomed target.
