    New to WHF, need advice.

From an outside perspective of one who has never played a serious miniatures game, let alone something as vast as WHF I need a bit of help as far as where to begin as far as purchases go. I don't really want to just start buying random pieces, and from what I hear the most of the Battalions aren't that great as is.

As far as armies, I'm leaning towards Warriors of Chaos, Vampire Counts, Ogres, Bretonnians, High Elves or maybe Daemons of Chaos.

I would need to buy the books for two of the aforementioned armies, plus the units to go alongside said armies. Leaning towards 1000pt armies for the time being, as it seems like a good place to start. I would also need to buy terrain of some sort.

Any suggestions for what to buy? I could probably look through each army and find pieces that look interesting to me, but I like most of the pieces each of the armies I listed has to offer. I don't really want to set a limit to cost, as I know it is rather expensive. But money isn't necessarily falling from the sky. So, for ease of purchase, try and make recommendations in $100USD blocks.

Edit: I did some research into the armies. I think, for one, I want High Elves for certain, something shooty, if possible. For the other, I'm torn between VC, Ogres and WoC, all for different reasons. Ogres would probably be the easiest for me to build/paint and be the cheapest to acquire. WoC would probably be the most straight forward. Fluff wise, VC would be my favorite, but they also seem the least new player friendly.

rule 1 for building a new army is generally to buy the codex and make some army lists with it. Test them out with proxies if you want, or just have people go over them with you on the forum here. Once you have a list you like and you think is generally solid, buy what is on the list. Once that's done you have your functional army. After that, you can just buy whatever you want for it.

TBH...if you buy new stuff...you'll be hard pressed to come in at 100 bucks. WHFB is a bit different than 40k and the point limits tend to be higher. 1000 is a good place to start, but once you buy an army book your looking at about 70 bucks left...which is 2 box sets. Meaning about 10-20 guys...or less if one of these boxes is a leader.

I'd look at which models you like best and focus on that army. For instance...Ogres require fewer models...because each model is a more beastly fighter than your average soldier. So you could get by with less. But you're still looking at $30-35 per box. You can get the battalion...which is a decent starting place with roughly 16 models to fill out a core of your army....but with no leader...and with no army book.

I think you're looking at at least 150 starting (if you go new). You can of course get about 10-20% off at online retailers such as wayland (follow the banners up top on the forum). Or you can use ebay and look for groups of models

I know $100USD won't get me very far, as far as building an army. But, I figure I can buy the pieces in $100USD increments and by doing so I have time to build and paint models while I wait for more, etc., etc

So, let's say... Core Rulebook + HE Army Book, that would be 100, let's go ahead and throw in the Ogre book as they seem fun.

Are the HE/Ogre Battalion boxes worth the money? If so, each one would be a separate 100. That should keep me occupied for a while.

The ogre box is probably one of the best boxes available.

I see what you mean...yeah that will work

After some more looking into Ogres, I've decided I don't care much for them. I also looked into VC, and decided against them. Really don't care for their core units. I don't like Lizardmen, Orcs and Goblins or Skaven at all. Bretts could be interesting, although I'd only want to run them if Pegasus mounts are some what viable. If not, it's looking like WoC... maybe DoC.

WoC can be a fairly small army. Super elite soldiers...no shooting, 1 piece of artillery. Some pretty interesting options for troops and leaders
