    think i got some virus's

    when i turned on my laptop today i noticed things were moving at a remarkably slow pace and plugins for youtube weren't working.

    so i go to avast anti virus and a message pops up saying i cant access it because some files were out of place or something. so i uninstall it and install adaware as its currently rated number 1 free antivirus software, run a full 1 hour scan and found nothing.

    my question is how would i possibly get rid of pretty advanced virus' that i may not even be able to detect. what programs should i get (free or otherwise) and what are ways i could speed up my computer again.

    mind you im not going to porn sites (they actually blocked on this network >_> ) but that doesnt mean im safe.

    Also you can try trendmicro's online scanner. I've had good luck with it before.

    Err. Ad-aware is NOT Anti-VIRUS. It's Anti-SPYWARE. There's a VAST difference.

    See if you can get Avast reinstalled and run that. Avast is the best, free Anti-Virus I've ever used.

    Reformatting is the last thing you really want to do. Try other options first, since a little time can save you a lot of time reinstalling your OS, all your programs, etc. Plus, if there are files you wish to save from a format, you STILL will need to scan them lest they re-infect the computer when you put them back on.

    Go to housecall.trendmicro.com and follow the instructions for a free scan... nothing can hide from it because it's external. It does a very complete scan of your entire system.

    If that doesn't find it you may have something far more interesting on your hands. Rootkit, zombot, etc... never know what will sneak into a Win box.

    Do you run a firewall?

    On the off chance you don't feel like installing a new os use spybot and malwarebytes. Works for me like a charm if I get virus paranoid.

    Most of them have the "disk" built in.

    I don't know about the newer OS, but in XP you go to Start -> Accessories -> System Tools.

    Edit: (Bleh, caught by a minor necro)

    wow i was actually contemplating it :/ now i feel sorry for those who have been trolled as such.

    also on another i actually managed to pick up a virus, and 2 virus scan programs have managed to obliterate it. so thats good, although now im a little weary of checking online banking info.
