    Exclamation Novel help!

So I am fairly new to the Warhammer 40K universe. I just found out that they actually had books and so I was hoping if any of you would know which book/s is/are a good starting point. Thank you

Read Horus Rising. the first of the Horus heresy series (find it on wiki), the series has like 17 books on the whole thing, takes place around year 30K or so. read any of the other books printed, those most likely take place in the 40K area.... the order for those is up to you. most of the books that are collected into "omnibus" books are pretty good...which is why they were reprinted...

Eit: read the fluff in the rule book first. best source of overall info.

Read the first four books in the Horus Heresy... then pick and choose the others in the series that interest you. It really sets up the current environment and gives you a ton of back story on where the Empire came from. There are also books detailing the struggle of each Legion (chapter) on both sides of the civil war... so if you have a favorite chapter there is likely good stuff about their background... or coming soon.

Otherwise, what are you into? If you want Space Marine books there are dozens... if you like IG then check out Dan Abnett's Gaunts Ghost series, etc.

It won't take long for you to figure out who and what you like to read.

Personall, I like anything Dan Abnett has written... Adam Debsky-Bowden (sp?) is another favorite of mine.

Thanks you two! I will definitely be picking up the Horus Heresy series as well as any books on Grey Knights and Dark Angels.

There are two great books in the HH series based on Dark Angels... so after you get through the first few of the series, check out Descent of Angels and then Fallen Angels.

Both excellent reads and cool backstory on the I Legion...

I have yet to read a GK novel... so I'm little help in that dept.

I'm new, too, and pretty much just asked this same question, and got the same answers.

I started with the Eisenhorn Omnibus, and DAMN, if it isn't AWESOME!!! Start there!

I recommend the Space Marine battles series. So far all of them have been a fantastic read. The Grey Knights omnibus isn't bad as are the books of the Ultramarines series (though book 4 is a bit odd).

Almost anything by Dan Abnett is worth a read.

    Space Marines (Salamanders). W 23 / L 98 / D 28.

I was looking around for books on Amazon and came across The Horus Heresy: Collected Visions. Is that actually the first four books plus pictures, or is it just supplemental information about the first four books and pictures? I couldn't really tell from the book's description. Thanks.

It's a collection of the four art books, which in turn cover the entire Heresy. Not to be confused with any of the novels, which have a long way to go before they reach the end of the war and the Siege of Terra.

    That is very helpful. Thanks.

Next question then is... Is there a collection of the books available or do I just need to get them individually? Thanks again.

My very first 40k books were the first 4 spacewolf novels from william king (after reading gotrek & felix in the warhammer fantasy setting i was looking for more of this guy) and i still think they are one of the best i've come around. After reading allmost anything availleble from 40k not out of date or very rare i would still recommend them.

There are some eBook bundles on black librarys website... not in print though AFAIK

My local Half Price Books has the first four books on the shelf... wish they had all of them when I was first looking...

Eisenhorn is a classic! Focuses on Inquisitors going about making mischief rather than the massive battles that so many of the other books deal with.

Likewise with the Ravenor trilogy, which continues chronologically from Eisenhorn, and the upcoming Bequin trilogy that will continue from there in the next year or two.

Hey guys, I just got back from a trip to Winnipeg, and while I was there I bought the Hammer of the Emperor omnibus and Brothers of the Snake. Once I got home, I was flipping through Hammer and noticedin the Introduction that it says "Welcome to HAMMER OF THE EMPEROR, the second volumeabout the Imperial Guard" or something to that effect.

Cans someone please tell me what the FIRST volume is called? And do I need to read it before HoTH?
