    Shoota boyz. When's it time?

Hi! Basically, I'm building the last of the boyz i'm gunna need for a while, and i was toying with the idea of making some shoota boyz. Here's a quick run down.

(Playing friendly games) My army is currently:

    Boss (Pole, claw)
nobz (2 claw, rest choppa +1 waaagh banner)
    Painboy
3 koptas (TL rokkits) each in their own squad
    3 kanz, all grotzookaz.
    Dread (4 CC weapons)
Looted wagon (boomgun and 2 BS)
    20 boyz + PK/BP nob
    20 boyz + PK/BP nob
2 trukks (not in use any more)

I have 3 more boxes of boyz to build, and was about to make a mob of 30 slugga boyz, until I had an idea.

I could make 10 sluggaz, 5 for each of my 20 mobz, and then make 2 mobs of 11 shoota boyz and put them in my trukks.

Does this sound like a good idea? I was looking forward to a massive green tide of 70 choppas running at the enemy, and was eventually planning on possibly fielding lootas, but this actually makes sense. The only thing stopping me s that I've only HEARD sootas are good, and only when you have so many choppaz to stand back them up.

    Any suggestions?

Shootas are great, but I'm a fan of larger mobz.

You get to roll 2 dice per guy when you shoot... so 11 boyz = 22 dice. You hit with 7 or 8 of them.

    30 boyz = 60 dice... or roughly 20 hits.

Open topped trukks are fine, but if were you I'd stick with larger units of footsloggers. I like choppa boyz for the most part, but always take at least one mob of shootas. They are awesome at holding objectives.

So, you're saying just make myself the original Idea of another mob of sluggas? Putting me to 70? (2x20 and a mob of 30)

I love the idea of how scary it must be to fight off 70 orks with 4 attacks each (potentially 280 a turn if i'm correct?) along side a 4 armed dread and nob mob with painboy and boss. I should surely be able to take point the good old fashioned way, of simply swarming enemies with everything until they can't hold any

You seem to speak highly of shoota boyz in large mobs by the "Always take at least one mob of shootas", i saw they are good in 30's if you plan them in an objective and just shoot at everything. Would you recommend investing in another 3 boyboxes for shootas or go straight for lootas in a squad of about 8-10? I love modelling boyz and seeing them in mobz, so creative freedom is no problem, just wondering as lootas were amongst one of the next on my list to buy

I would make up a big mob of shootas, 20 - 30... then use the rest to fill in your slugga boyz.

And YES... get some Lootas. Run mobz of 8-10 each... nothing rains down death for orks better

Thanks a lot! Think I've worked it out. Counting the nob leaders, I have 2 mobs of 21 sluggas, and 33 orks to still build (11 to a box).
Make 8 into sluggas, and spread them into my 2 mobs, putting me at 25 and 25... then I have 25 left over to gun down with shootas!

I was thinking of taking the full 2 big shootas I'm allowed in this mob, but 10 points for 2 weapons that are only margianly better than the originals seems a bit iffy. Since I've never experienced shoota boyz, would you be able to offer me confirmation or a slap in the face at taking both of them? Seems like the double range would be a bit wasted next to the rest of teh mob, but it's tougher ammo seems like it would help the mob deal with enemies coming at them in a transport or simply stronger units trying to take their point.

I wouldn't bother with the big shootas... or rokkits...

Several reasons... first is points. You get slightly better range, strength and one extra shot for 5 points. But you're likely to not use the range... if they all can't reach you will want to run instead.

Also, chances are you will only have 3 turns of shooting with them... figure running on the first turn, then a couple turns of walking and shooting, followed by some assault turns. So the five points really don't do much when you have a 1/3 chance of hitting anything in the first place.

Save those points for something more useful... like bosspoles and red paint jobs

Makes perfect sense ^^ one final question if you don't mind. I obviously want a nob with them for a pole, but can he take a shoota? I see why a claw would still be nice, but I don't like the idea of buying a nob and not having him shoot half the game.

Nope, he has no shoota option... not like in the Nobz mob.

Basically he is a must... not much in the shooting phase, but he gives them a L bonus when needed, bosspole access and that power klaw. Ohhhh, the power klaw... hands down the most important weapon in the ork arsenal.

S9 on the charge, 4 attacks if I remember correctly? So he is your best bet for busting transports and armor, walkers, MC's etc
