ok so i just got into fantasy and i got the dwarf/orc starter box and have worked on the dwarves first going in 300 on more for that army. so after reading some of the threads here im wondering if i made a wrong choice in a army to start with. i mean i keep seeing bretts vampires, orgre, dark elves. i haven't played a game yet so i cant say for sure but if you have played dwarves and or played against them give me some idea's of how to play them.

Well, vampires, despite popularity arent a goo beginner army. They take some experience to use well. By comparison, Dwarves are a brilliant starter army as they let you learn how melee, ranged and artillery works and they are also somewhat magic-resistant. Dwarves often give my Vampires a good run for their money - they can be pretty tough and hardy, especially with a high level rune priest (i think that's his name?) in there.

dwarves are a funny army, but silly mistakes can be your downfall. You can be easily countered when playing skaven or beastmen they can shut down your artillery like its nobodies business. You NEED an anvil of doom. they are a must have for dwarfs it is the only thing that makes them competitive. But over all they are really fun to play. People tend to underestimate dwarfs as well which is awesome and plays to your advantage all of the time. Ill find my dwarf list form Ard boyz that took me to nationals and you can see an example of a good dwarf list (I think anyhow others may differ)

Anvils are far from the only things which make Dwarfs Work. You have an army of T4, High Ws, High Ld, Great Weapon Troops with Magical War Machines!

However, I'm not going to lie, they do helps.

with out the anvil people can out move you out man you out magic you. with the anvil you can pretty much shut down the magic phase you can slow down up to 3 units a turn while hurting them in the process. when i play a dwarf player with no anvil it is an auto win.

In HIGHLY competitive play, an anvil of doom is very good.

I have not played against skaven or beastmen(although I know abit about beastmen). How do skaven get at the warmachines? Beastmen have ambushers but that is easily counterd by a unit of cheap warriors put to guard the war machines.
And note: if your takeing alot of warmachines then pay the points for a guard unit.

I don't remember the old starter set with dwarf/orc, what models do you get in there? some static pose warriors and thunderers i believe?

Anyway, what you want to do is buy 2 battleforces. You can pretty much convert every unit excpet ironbreakers from the basic warriors and thunderers sets - the other option is to buy the outdated 'metal' mini's that have the exact same pose so they are expensive and don't look that great. The rest of the war machines are all finecast now so you can pick those up when you feel like it but they are pricy so if you can use substitutes then do that.

Dwarves should have a new codex by the end of the year - so that lots of new mini's and options. I suspect this is also the reason they have not released the rest of the infantry units in finecast because they will just get replaced.

Since this is mainly a 40k website I suggest you look up http://www.bugmansbrewery.com/ Its the main dwarf forum. I find it difficult to navigate because they have fancy dwarf names for everything but just keep searching and you'll find what you need.

both skaven and beastmen have special abilities to shut off your artillery on a 4+ and yeah ambushers are not a prob with beastmen, but the have the 4+ ability plus the famine which causes d3 wounds to everything within 36 inches by by war machines.
