    what the waaaagh!

i just noticed that gretchin have a bs of 3 wtf. so that explains why killa kans have a bs of 3. but ill never know why the little scared greenskins are better shooter then orks. so im thinkin of fielding 60 of them instead of shoota boys. ive got a better chance of hiting.

so let me know your thoughts

That's one way of looking at it. But then you need to compare the respective guns of Grots and Shoota Boyz.

Gretchin have BS3 and come with grot blastas, S3 AP- guns with a single shot at 12" range. And when combat happens, they are still Gretchin.

Shoota Boyz are BS2 and come with -- you guessed it -- shootas. These are S4 AP6 guns with two shots at 18". When combat happens, they are still Orks.

OK, so... Quick math, with nice round even numbers for ease of anything.

If you have a range of 12" you'll likely fire once before the enemy can get to you in combat. If you have a range of 18" you can probably fire twice. We'll use that as fact for these numbers.

A squad of 10 Gretchin with BS3 have a 50% chance to hit on each shot. They'll fire 10 shots, of which 5 will hit. Then you have wounds and armor saves. Then they get assaulted and probably die.

A squad of 10 shoot Boyz with BS2 have a 33% chance to hit on each shot. They'll fire 20 shots, of which 6.67 will hit. Then you have wounds - More likely - And armor saves - AP6 isn't THAT much of a difference a lot of times, but hey - It's there. Already we're at a better standing than Gretchin.

Then the Boyz will likely be able to fire AGAIN, for another 6.67 shots that should hit. Then they get assaulted and, well... They're Orks. They're not bad in combat.

I don't have any relevant codex in front of me so I can't pull any other hard numbers, but the primary difference is points. If you have the points, go for the Boyz. You'll get more out of them, and while you can buy more Grots for the same points, Boyz will still outperform in most cases.

    Pun always intended.
