    Melee army

hey, so i'm making a chaos melee army and i was just wondering if there are any suggestions as to what's most important. i have a Demon Prince, 18 Khorne Berserkers, 5 Possessed, and Kharne the betraye. also i have 10 chaos space marines, and a predator. Anything I desperately need to make my army better?

I'm no Chaos player, but maybe more Khorne Berzerkers

I prefer to purchase marines second hand, they have more experience that way

unless you're going melee horde, some rhinos and maybe a landraider would help.
transports help get your fighters down the field faster.
so if you're using squads of 10 of less transports are good, but if you're doing 11 or more they don't need transports since they can't fit in them

    Army (W/L/D)
    CSM 0/0/0 (70% painted)
    Tyranid 0/0/0 (updating)
    Eldar 1/1/5

You need rhino's to protect your troops, berzerkers work best with a landraider, get another daemonprince, maybe even a summoned greater daemon, get lesser daemons, more troops....

    CSM armylist suggestion:

    2 DP, wings & warptime: 310p

    optionnal: Summoned greater daemon 100p

3x 10csm icon of khorne 2 melta asp champion and a rhino :750p ( this is squad with a naked champion without upgrades, fist or sword to your liking, just remember if you field a greater daemon you have to sacrifice one)

    1x, 2x, 3x,... summoned lesser daemon units ( 7-8 isn't a bad amount for a unit)

Depending on your points left, you can fill up the rest of the army with heavy support (oblits for example) a random funny/sneaky/ outflanking/deepstriking chaos unit to your liking and so on...

so is the possessed squad that i have kind of out of place in this army? they seem almost pointless to have because the berzerkers seem more efficient for point value, and the possessed are a tad bit unreliable due to their demonkin ability, i never know what i'm dealing with until the game actually starts.

Personally, I think Possessed are too expensive and unreliable for their points, especially with berzerkers in the list. Possessed are 5pts per model more for -1WS, +1S and a 5+ invulnerable save. Two of the 6 items on their daemonkin table the berzerkers come with as standard (Feel No Pain and Furious Charge), so that +1S is only applicable if they roll for Furious Charge on their daemonkin list. I love the idea of possessed and I do hope the next update fixes them, but for now they're just too expensive for what they do next to KBs. 'zerkers all the way.

You are correct, it's the Plague Marines that do.

And I think dreadnoughts will be fun addition to your army because they go crazy sometimes

Whoops, my mistake. Still, they're nice and choppy.

Dreadnoughts can work. Take 3 if possible, with two close combat arms and run them across the table, hoping they don't roll too many Fire Frenzy's. That's 300pts and even if none of them reach the enemy lines they'll have focussed a lot of fire on the dreads instead of the other 1200pts. Not a foolproof idea, but a fun one.

okay awesome...so i've been reading that the possessed are basically the poop of the chaos. so should i just sell them and get them out of my hair? also, are raptors worth considering?

I wouldnt worry, you havent got very many of them, and its always good to have a few extra forces around you can draft in to make larger armies (eg someone wants to play 2000 points for a change?) or just switch units around for variety. Its not as if you have a shedload of them, after all.

I'd take a peek at the other army lists already posted in the CSM forum - there has been some good discussions on assaulty forces, usually built around Khorne or CSM with maxed melta (like Vikin above) and one or two daemon princes.

Get some ideas together, work our your likely best list and post it for critique.

Provided they're not too outlandish (you can still see what the weapons are etc.), possessed can make good aspiring champions for your squads.

I've had moderate succes with them. 2 units of 5 raptors, 2 with a melta and one naked aspiring champion. Small enough to hide or give a coversave, still a threath due to the 2 melta and the naked asp champion is for the greater daemon, they can be halfway or even further across the board in round 2 and if you're lucky with the daemon he's stuck in assault in your round2. I've managed to do that now and then and it's nasty.

another problem i've had is that my friend plays orcs, and obviously he's a melee army too, and so far i've just gotten dominated. is this expected in a chaos vs orc melee?

You probably just got outnumbered... 3 to 1? And your friend probably got burnas and power klaws. Or did he make you fight his dreads in melee?

Orcs are horde melee specialists with a lot of hidden high-strength weapons in their mobs. Make sure the dreadnoughts and kans don't get into combat, try to ensure you get the charge and concentrate on crippling one unit as fats as possible before moving on to the next one. Use your berzerkers to eat through their mobs on the charge and keep your princes away from power klaws.

I would suggest Defilers for your mad melee rush. 5 attacks on the charge (with 2 claws) and fleet. Or soften them up with a battle cannon to the face (lots of orks = lots of targets!) Armor 12 means that most Boyz wont be penning you either, with only power fist equivalent.

as stated above, use your possessed as champions, or just mix them into your units if you are playing friendly games (assuming your friends/opponents dont mind). ive used possessed with kharne as if he goes nuts, they have a chance to save his gorechild swings.

I beat my friend today! one thing that worked very well for me was using my havoc launchers effectively. i must have killed at least 30 orcs with the two combined (one on predator, one on rhino). it was a close-ish match, but another big factor was that i was the one who assaulted at least 75% of the time. it feels good to finally win!!!
