    'Nids or Daemons?

I want to build an army full of big expensive MONSTER units with few models that will make people crap their pants when I put it on the table. When I say monster they don't have to be technically monstrous creatures. They just have to be big and mean and scary. It would help if I can make my opponent say "Something that big shouldn't be able to move that fast."

I think Nids or Daemons would be the best but it's been a while since I actually played. If another army would work better, I'm open to anything but space elves.

Those monster armies don't really exist anymore. Tyranid monsters got way more expensive, making it really hard to make a workable list of only big critters, and Daemons is...well they're Daemons. They're not going to win you many games.

I know you said anything but space elves, but Dark Eldar really can do a mean Monster list. Search the Dark Eldar forum for 'Monster Mash' and you'll find a really good list by Tavitin.

    Necrons
    Dark Eldar
    Death Guard
    Nurgle Daemons
    Traitor Guard

Army full of big expensive monsters? Then nids is the way to go!
You can field nid warriors as troops now. You can have an army with nothing on 25mm base.
Carnifexes can go in broods of 3, so you can have 9 if you want.
Winged warriors can be your fast attack. With boneswords they ignore armour.

I like multiple wound models in a unit, because they don't lose combat effectiveness by losing a wound or two. Just gotta watch out for instant kill weapons...

You can do it with Nids. Just don't expect to be the most competitive army out there. Fun though. Deamons have a fair few to chose from too but they suffer from being a bit outdated. I play against Deamons regularly though and they don't do that badly. Beat me last time I played them!

Blood angels army with the maximum number of dreds would "scare the crap" out of many.I think there is a way to get 14 but i may be wrong.ofcourse you arent gonna take objectives with that army since to do so you need death company squads and death dreds and they are troop but cant hold objectives.
Another choice would be terminator armies which grey knights would be best for that.Dont have that codex so i cant help you there at all.
3rd choice would be pic your favorite army and add a forge world titan for friendly games or to just sit by your side while you play
