my laptop died
Not that it was young... or healthy by any means.
Basically I have an old Compaq, AMD Sempron with just a spritz of memory that got to the point it refused to even boot to Windows XP any more. It was my moms old backup laptop. She gave it to me to see if I could fix it.
I nuked the hard drive and loaded Vector Linux on it (a version of Slackware Linux designed for older hardware) and it was perfect. Fast boot, quick response, ran like a champ!
The battery was crap since I got it... so I had to plug it in when I used it. Yesterday I was messing with a GK list spreadsheet (thank you, Alice40k) when it just shut off...
I went to wiggle the power cord, since sometimes it's a bit loose.
The male end of the power plug BROKE OFF in my laptop! I had to grab needle nose pliers to remove it!!
I'm hoping the local genius can just solder it back together and tape it up for me, or heatshrink it or something... just to make it usable again.
I only used it for army lists, surfing the web and occasionally writing (the fiction bug hits me so seldom any more...) but damn if it doesn't suck not having my army list writing machine close at hand.
Now the problem becomes: Do I fork over $300 for a new laptop? Or a new Grey Knights army?

That sucks, computer trouble seems to be going around lately. On the bright side, the female port obviously really liked your male end

indeed... so much it killed her... luckily I backed her up on a regular basis. (that should be good for a few more jokes, no?)
I just found out that my friend has a Toshiba unit that needs a hard drive and OS... I happen to have several of both!
I'm going to play with it and see what I can come up with...

At least a few more =).
I have a friend who now has to use his PS3 to surf the internet because his motherboard basically exploded. My computer locked me out of my profile and I had to make a new one, and now I hear about this.

I spent all of November without my laptop and any internet access.....it was weird. I found out about this thing known as life....didn't much care for it.

In total i have 4 pc's in my house,2 desktops for both the misses (she's a teacher) and me and 2 laptops... if ever i would fall without a pc i'd sell my arm to get a new one. If i ever had to make a choice between a tv or pc i'd throw the tv out of the window without a second of doubt.

I still have my desktop... but my kids tend to use it more often than I'd like.
Wife has her laptop, oldest daughter has hers too... the rest of the kids used to share a unit down here until it went belly up. But I just ordered a lease return business machine from Circuit City for $99 that will replace that one... giving them back a dedicated kid machine and me back my desktop!
I may or may not get another laptop... if that Toshiba works then great, otherwise I'll probably hold off.
New position at work has be ten times busier so I probably won't notice it's gone after a few more days...

PC shops like Radioshack, places like Wal-Mart, etc will only have generic ones that cost minimum of $80-$90. Comp repair shops will likely have to order them and will probably charge you more
Pun always intended.
