space marines and close combat-ness
I always chose shooty armys (guard, tau, necrons), always been my kind of playstyle, however i decided i need to actually make something close combaty, and i havnt played anything spehss mehreeny since choas in 4th, but i dont want to start chaos again (too irregular imo) so i think space marines might be a good bet.
but which one?
Im sure vanilla marines could make a decent cc army ( i think)
I refuse to play blood angels (everyone seems to play blood angels and i dont like there style))
not even gonna mention dark angels
I am liking both black templar and grey knights both for there knighthood, crusadingness and style, and both can make good CC armys im sure, so of these too what do you guys think will be a good choice to play?
Grey knights are powerful units on there own, having power weapons and combi bolters and such, but very expensive units, and irreplaceable on the table.
BT sound like a good bet, being slightly more numerous and varied perhaps. also supposedely being updated in a month or too so they get nice goodies, plus it was always the army i wanted to play if i played space marines

It all depends on how many models you want, BT will give you more models, GK less. GK are pretty strong right now having just got a new dex recently, but BT will be as well in about a month I think. Up to you really, just figure out what you want, and that'll tell you who to choose.

40k has always been a numbers game IMO so BT sound like a good bet.

I think for more pure CC style, BT would be your best bet. They're getting a new codex soon however, so be weary of what you're buying.
I picked Space Wolves when I started because they reminded me of dwarves (which I played in Chronopia). Loving their versatility.

You'd talked yourself into BTs by your second post in this thread.

This week I am good-naturedly shaking my fist at: Baragash. For being unreasonably reasonable.
Sex, drugs and pointy ears.
Cheaphammer 40p: 2000 points of Marines as cheap as possible.
It'll be alright on the Knight - a slow refreshing of my original Grey Knight army.

Grey Knights don't go to heaven: they go to hell and regroup.

BT armies are more rare, though with the new dex thats probablly going to change
. Seems your learning towards BT, and imo there minis are gorgous, and will no doubt have even nicer ones on the way. Everyone and their dog seems to play GK atm too....

One thing about BT is their most competitive builds are shooty. Sure you can have a lot of termis but you want them to spam strength 8 missiles. If you don't want to play gk,BA, or SW and want cc you should go vanilla and take more cc options, be wise in how you use them because there are plenty of things out there that will kill them in cc.

I would go BT... check some of the major tourneys in the US last year... a couple were BT lists.
GK have strengths, but I don't know that they are as strong in CC as BT. If update rumors are true that only continues in the new book.
Blood angels do well, mainly because they can melta-spam assault troops all day long.
Wolves are really good mid-range army, like GK that way IMO. They have counter-attack which helps them remain mid-range and still deal well with a charge. Plus the GH get boltgun, pistol and CC weapon, so they make for a good multi-use type squad.
GK can still take Termies with swords/halberds and with a banner they're pretty nasty in CC. Paladins with apothecary are insane, but really expensive... plus everybody gets storm bolters which are Assault 2.

The thing with the Blood Angels is that you dont have to do the melta spam, theres the razorback spam like AoB or you can go fluffy or even take a ranged force with a good counter assault force.
I've started leaving out the assault marines in favour of tacticals and terminators
Then you have your furioso dreadnoughts with Av13, Baal predators, fast vehicles and death company which could easily be made using Black Templar models and so on. Blood Angel rules, Black Templar styling?

Of course, you could always create your own chapter and build up armies around multiple codices. Second company might use the vanilla Space Marines codex, while the tenth company keeps a large number of Space Marines to fight alongside their Scouts like Black Templars.

vanilla has cc in assault termies honor guard and command squads. well thats where it is at its best. for 250 points you can get a fully upgraded command squad with storm bolters, storm shields, power weapons, champ and standard. when i run mine it takes out large squads quickly and other power squads avoid them. plus i made them with some grey knight figures so they look bad ass.
on the other hand both troop choices do decent work in cc against most squads plus can take out armor with their standard issue krak grenades and the sgt's melta bomb. though running scouts into cc should be a last resort unless you planned them for slowing and advance.
