    The power fist

When in the universe did someone decide "I want to make something that will punch the enemy REALLY REALLY HARD!" and why?

Are you kidding? I'm planning on building one myself with a 9v battery, a taser, and a Nintendo Power Glove. Won't double my strength, but the resultsa should still be ... shocking.

I imagine with all that extra strength it started as a power lifting glove, then it turned to military purposed when someone got mad and punched a building down.

It's for when something has to absolutely, positively be dead as soon as possible. I'd be assured something I crushed into paste wasnt going to get its ugly ass back up.

The origins of the powerfist are known only now in myth, unfortunatly when it was first made and by who is long forgotten .
Many years before the dark age of technology mankind , who was advancing techwise were suddenly assailed (allbeit in small numbers ) by parasitic
entities , who survived by hyppnotising the very young or those of limited intellect and slowly destroyed their brain cells and enslaved them .
Various efforts were made to destroy these repulsive creatures BUT when they had matured and took on physical form they were extremly hard to dispose of.
So in desperation the scientific and military ( whose children had fallen prey) came up with a weapon that would not only reduce these parasites to a mere
greasy smudge on the floor but would also give the user the satisfaction of repeatadly smashing them in the face .
Thus the powerfist was Born .
Trapping two grown specimens ( known as the jedward strain ) in a falsified music charity event , the fist was first used to smash the repulsive pair in the face repeatadly untill all life had been crushed , the weilder of the fist was asked if they should increase the powerfield to make dispatching quicker
his reply was " not really i was enjoyinhg that "
And so the hunt was on and over many years as the horrible affliction was hunted and punched to Death the fist developed untill finally as the last
strain was cornered ( a viscious Bieber strain ) and dispached to its shrill crys of " oh baby baby baby" the weapon was as we would recognise it today.
It was then put in safe storage for a time when hideous nasty things would need to be punched to death in a most glee inspiring manner.

Seriously speaking? A power fist is used for narrow spaces, like a corridor, where power swords and other big power weapons would be a liability. With a power fist, one could simply FALCON PUNCH the shit out of their enemies with minimum swing and space needed.

I hate saying it...but Drakon is right. It's to eliminate the need to draw/swing larger weapons where there may not be room. Rather than stabbing or slashing, you can simply reach out and touch someone....flick them....squeeze them...or potentially giving them the bird...

    makes sense.

the powerfist does indeed increase the strength of the user, but i always thought it would throw them off balance, those things look like they weigh a ton.

also keep in mind what weapons throughout 40 have been developed for boarding work...a powerfist could help troops rip through terrain without encumbering the hand that supports the bolter

Everyone forgets that it seems like only hand weapons can have a power field, whether sword axe or glove. and like above posts with the close combat advantage its huge, even a sword in super close combat is too much. and also the dexterity, your can grab someones arm, and squeeze it off..or their head for that matter. then turn off the field and use it regular.

well, anything and everything can be made into a power weapon, so why not your fists? I mean, you have a sack of power doornails for crying out loud and power feet, can't forget about power feet.

Angry Marines aside, it was only a matter of time when you figured out you could strap a conductive rail and a matter disruption generator on anything and everything that you would get to a glove or armored gauntlet. It is the one weapon all humanity is born and dies with after all, hands.

    A newcomer's theory.

Okay, I admit I'm new here, but I'll weigh in upon this issue with a few sources of fact and my own opinions on the origins of the Power Fist.

Fact states how the power Fist works, bu amplifying the strength of the user through a potent disruptive energy field. Like with other Power weapons, the Power Fist deals an extreme amount of damage to a localized area, and as such it penetrates through protective armour or carapaces with ease. Hence why, as in the 40K rulebook, wounds from a Power Fist have no Armour saves. It's stating the obvious, but best to re-state the obvious facts to explain my theory.

As for their lowering Initiative to 1, it makes sense that the amplification of strength through the disruptor field would take time to charge as the wielder swings, and the impact would be released at a specific point, so the wielder would naturally need to brace for the recoil, as per Newton's 3rd Law of Physics. For every action, there is an equal and opposing reaction. Add in the size and weight of the Power Fist, along with trying to balance yoru body with such a weight, and it's easy to see why using one is such a challenge.

Next up is Terminator Armour, or in its official title, Tactical Dreadnought Armour. This is most likely the most potent armour available to a Space Marine, be they traitor or loyallist. However, the armour's extreme durability, or so the rumors from both the Space Marines and Grey Knights Codexes, state that Terminator Armour can withstand the titanic energies of a plasma generator's core, and that this may be the armour's original purpose. In a similar vein, a Power Fist may have been originally created as a means of handling large and dangerous materials without compromising on personal safety.

Basically, if Terminator Armour was, as theorized in the codexes, originally used as part of maintaining plasma generators, it could eb theoretically possible that Power Fists were able to safely hold containers of plasma or even the control rods of the generator itself without the workers suffering seriosu injury due to plasma's instability and the extreme weight of the components needed to safely handle it or parts of a generator without extreme manpower.

That's just my basic theory. probably stupid, but definitely plausible. After all, several items which have had a domestic or industrial use in the past and even in our present day have been made into weapons as necessary. Why not the Power Fist?
