2000pts Vampire Counts Friendly. Blood Dragon themed.
Years ago in 5th and 6th ed the Von Carsteins shared the book along with the Strigoi, Necrachs, Lahmians and Blood Dragons. Then 7th ed came along and the other 4 were sent to get new jobs.
However the old lines have sort of reappeared again with Lahmians getting the coven throne and the strigoi having his own entry. Still despite this I have decided it is time for the Blood Dragons to return and have come up with the following.
Lords
Vampire Lord with barded nightmare, shield, heavy armour, sword of bloodshed, red fury, quickblood, staff of damnation, lvl 2 upgrade. 444pts
Heroes
Wight king on barded nightmare with battle standard and 130pts
Lvl 2 Necromancer 100pts
Vampire with heavy armour, extra hand weapon, barded nightmare, book or arkan 153pts
Core
20 + Doom Wolf Upgrade Dire Wolves 170pts
20 + Doom Wolf Upgrade Dire Wolves 170pts
30 Skels with spears and standard, flaming banner 160pts
Special
8 Black Knights with barding and hell knight 202pts
9 Black Knights with barding and hell knight and standard 236pts
5 Varghiests 230pts
Total 1995pts
So jist of the list.
The vampire lord and wight king join the 8 main unit and the vampire lord is basically desgined to go into something and tear it apart with 8 possibly 9 attacks with more from red fury he shouldn't have to much trouble doing that. The king is my battle standard and the knights are more a bodyguard then anything if the staff goes off should make them pretty nasty as well.
The other vampire joins the 9 man squad of the knights is also just to splat things but has the book so I have another way to get Vanhels if I don't get from my normal spells.
The necromancer now I can feel a 6th ed Blood Dragon sneaking up on me for taking that as they wern't in Blood Dragons lists however I'm getting around this by saying she is a damsel that was turned to necromancy and as Blood Dragons are in Bretonnia it fits. Non-fluff wise she's lvl 2 wizard who hides in the skels.
The wolves are to fit in with the fast moving part of the army and just charged into something and hold it in place for a few turns and do some damage.
Skels are the necromancers bodyguard and represent the peasants... BLOODY PEASANTS!
The knights represent undead knights of the realm and I'm planning to make them using the new black knights and a couple of KOTR boxes.
Varghiests... I like the models and flying monstrous unit whats not to love. Mainly going to be used to deal with ranged units and artillery.
So this is still a very early version of the list bar the book I have nothing but still open to critique but remember this is themed around Blood Dragons so very CC based, magic is limited to lvl 2 and nothing like ghouls or zombies.

I've got a lot to learn about list synergy, comparing mine to yours. Seems the playstyle has changed a lot from 'make vampire lord toughest M-F on the board' to something more affordable. And, with the change to the general's death rule, I should have considered that... I know it's personal choice, but I was wondering why no bat swarms to slow down enemies who happen to be fighting the vampire in the 9-block?

With the bat swarms I did consider them but upon finding they have hover not fly I decided not to as this prevents them for marching which means they will be advancing at the same speed or even slower then everything bar the skels where I really want them to be able to march 20" into the side and then hit a unit on the flank when another unit charges to ensure maximum damage in terms of combat res.

Hm, I suppose that's a point. Your army would be going pretty quick compared to them.
