Army List Construction - How do you?

So, here I am writing lists at 1AM in the morning, trying to work out how to spend points. I know how I'd spend those points in a none compositional environment, but I haven't got a clue how I really want to spend them in this current list without going down the standard route, in this case, just spending my last 210 points on Chaff, clearly the best option.

    So, I'm trying to play a flying circus style army. I've been doing it with my Bretts and it works, fairly well, so in effect, I don't see any real reason not to do it with the Vampires, but they seem to be able to do it better. So, this is where I am at the moment;

Strigoi Lord on a Terrorgheist. Red Fury, Aura of Dark Majesty, Dragonbane Gem, Potion of Strength (585)
    Necromancer, Lv2, Scroll (125)
    Necromanser, Lv2, Channeling Staff (115)

    40 Ghouls, Ghast (410)
    25 Zombies, Mus, Standard (85)
    25 Zombies, Mus, Standard (85)
    5 Wolves (40)
    5 Wolves (40)

    5 Vargheists, Vorgoyle (240)
    5 Vargheists, Vorgoyle (240)

    Terrorgheist (225)

    Army Total = 2190

Now, due to lack of flaming attacks I'm really thinking that the Rod of Flaming Death might be better on a Necromancer instead of the Staff, but that's only 25 points difference. Either way, this leaves me around 200 points left. Now, in a none comp environment for the theme of the list I'd have some units of double fell bats or bat swarms to keep with the flying (or hovering) theme, however the bigger events in the UK always seem to limit flying units. Now, I live in Notts, near Maelstrom Games so I have to take their events into account, so that means usually, it's SCGT Comp. This means, under Version 2.0, I'm only allowed 4 flying units.

So, that means no Fell Bats. I can take Bat Swarms but they're slow, and lets face it, the Spirit Hosts do the same job, even better. But I always find it hard how to spend these last points, no matter the list or the army!

So, how do you lot go about army list construction. I've picked the units I want, then added in the units I feel I need to help make it slightly more competitive. So, that's the Flying things and Ghouls are what I want, but the extra magic provided by the Necro's are needed, plus the split of the two Necro's into 2 bunkers means I can't be spelled off in one go (from the front with suns etc, or dwellers) and means they to really force the crumbles they have to come to me. The 2nd Terro stays within the Generals March Bubble (making sure he's within 12" of the foot troops at the start of T2 so they can march before he flys away) so they can double scream at -Ld off his aura. The Vargheists can operate outside of the bubble due to being vamps so it lets me really push both flanks. Well, that's the idea's anyway, so the rest of the points are chaff to help.

I know I'm starting to ramble, but you can see where it's going so I'll leave you too it.

How about adding in something completly differnt? Like cavalry...sure it's not what your'd call a circus theme, but if your happy with your list so far why not have a stand-a-lone unit?

Remember people, Basilisk'''s are my friends

    But sadly, not yours

hexwraiths. ethereal cavalry that don't have to charge to harm the enemy.
    Solves your problem entirely.

When writing lists, I have the opposite problem - I want all the things and lack the points to do so.
