Old models. Yay or nay?
You've probably already guessed what this post is refering to, but there are actually ways I'd see older models to not be allowed, wheras others would make me think "why not?". I was planning on buying gretchin in bulk due to their cheap eBay price compared to a new box from GW. Also the fact I genuinely prefer the older gretchin models with their armoured look. Here's some thoughts.
If they have the right equipment, then what's wrong? They are the unit. They have the equipment. It's the same thing in a different pose.
Granted some stuff is differently scaled, like the old ork trukk... which can be considered cheese if you use a model that is tactically superior. But these gretchin are jut little grots.
What do you guys think? Are old models legal to use in any circumstances?

So long as its a GW model and WYSIWYG then I cant believe anyone would have a promblem with old models. I mean for me go back 17/18 years when I did fantasy, the Beastman Champion and Shamen I had are still available !
I am the Inquisition until my wife says stop being silly and mow the lawn ! Inquisition : 2000pts Current Focus (see my log - just need to paint it)
THANK YOU GW...... Thank you for the great game that is 40k you have built over years of hard work (honestly, no sarcasm, I AM A GW FANBOY - KEEP IT UP!) =D>

Hell, my entire GK army is metal infantry and now they're in plastic. I'd do nasty things with the gaming table and my opponent's earhole(s) if they said I couldn't play because they're the old type. Bases can be troublesome at times, because some models came on different bases to their current incarnations. But for little gretchin, it'll be fine.

It'll be alright on the Knight - a slow refreshing of my original Grey Knight army.

A white metal model inserted in someones orifice does Sooooo much more damage than the plastic equivalent, lol
Some really old models do look a bit rubbish (e.g. original terminators), but there is no rule against using them so long as they are on the correct base sizes - so old terminators need rebasing for instance. It really comes down to the size of your budget, and the amount of pride you take in your army.
When I play my son in Fantasy, we still use some of the very first plastic model set released by Citadel (and some even older white metal models)! With a decent paint job they dont look too bad, but I wouldnt want to take them to a tournament. A reasonably painted old model always looks a million times better than a black spray-undercoated model, and it is not uncommon for people to field those.

I don't see anything wrong with the older models either. Some of them are quite cute! True, some of the older models are kind of out of date like the tiny ork trukks. I haven't been playing 40K all that long but I borrow some of the old trukks from time to time from a friend, and what I've done is to put them on cardboard bases that give them the same footprint as the new trukk and I tell my opponent that for purposes of cover, LOS, etc. consider them the same as a newer trukk, of which I own one and always field so the comparison can be made. So far no one has had a problem with it. I don't play that list very often, just something different to do. Mostly I find that keeping my army WYSIWYG is an aspect of the game that gives me pleasure, though I don't care if my opponent does the same so long as I know what stuff is and they are being reasonble, i.e. not fielding Matchbox cars and calling them trukks.
The fun is the thing after all.
As for grots, I can't imagine why anyone would have a problem with the older ones. I think if you are going to use a lot of grots mixing in the older ones is a great idea instead of using all new ones. Not only are they cheaper but you would get more variety in looks and poses too for a large group.

I'm building a Nid army out of nothing but classic models and some polystryrene eggs. Looks better and keeps the costs down.
Someone complains, and I take off my sock, slide my carnifex into it and start spinning...

I own tons of those old grots. Scale is barely any different. No one will moan, especially about grots.

most old models are crap, but some are good. I love the classic tzeentch flamers for herald converstions. Classic nids actually looked like bugs. I find the classic orks to look like total crap compared to todays orks as to the SM. Most old models lack detail.

Sounds like a good plan.
Iv just come back to the hobby from a ten year hiatus and am using some old IG models to start a new army which includes an original Yarrick with the lobster looking claw instead of the new one. I dont mind it and iv repainted it now, just hope no one tries to tell me i cant use it. otherwise yarricks claw wmight get stuck up their nose..
