The Weeping Rose: Second Dominion Squad and Rimmolator

Having seen the trend for painting/modelling blogs on here, I thought I might jump on the proverbial band wagon. As a small introduction I initially started playing 40k with my brother as a kid in Weymouth, in the early 90's, with the 2nd Edition boxed set, which we shared the painting of, badly. I had various dabbles with Orks, Eldar and Space Marines before 3rd Edition happened, which put me off for some reason, so I switched to WFB. A few years of Snakebite leather base coat/bleached bone drybrush/skull white highlight ensued, before puberty really kicked in and toy soldiers were left well and truly behind for chasing skirt. Until September '11, when my wife was in Afghanistan and my ship (we're both Royal Navy) was in home port for a month, so I had a flat all to myself, and not much to do. So instead of going down the "beer and hookers" route, I stopped into the local GW store, and thought to myself, "What looks cool?" And so the 3rd CDR was born:

And having worked out photo bucket on the iPad we can continue! Lol

Well, with a CCS, Chimera and Manticore, the next step was to produce Alpha Platoon, using a Cadian platoon boxed set and two Chimeras:

And then on with Bravo Platoon, done in the same way, but with different colour squad markings, and no transports, as they're intended for Vendettas:

(and as you can see on that phot, I'd also painted up the Sentinels fro the two Platoon bowed sets.)

Then I finished off the Sentinals and had a dabble with Dreadfleet over the Christmas and New Year period:

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/2a5aa8d7.jpg

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/96008fae.jpg

Unfortunately can't find a picture of the 3rd one, but it has a rather snazzy base where it's standing on an Eldar Jetbike, while a Sergeant Guardsman cuts the riders arm off with a chainsword.

    And one from Dreadfleet:

At this point the 3rd CDR had reached 1750 points so a couple of games ensued:

Woah, easy tiger. Edit posts into one instead of double, triple, quad etc posting. Makes the mods cranky.

A nice looking force you've got there. One thing I would suggest is consistent basing over all the models - it'll make them all look more like a unified force which helps them no end.

    Now for that Baneblade ...

Then the jump from 1750 to 2000 points was quite straight forward with the addition of Nork Deaddog and a pair of converted Hydra Flak Tanks, made from the bed plate of a Manticore and the turret from the Aegis Defence Line kit.

A slight change in colour scheme happened to. Instead of flat Snakebite Leather and Dessert Yellow with a line of Bleached Bone between, I started basing with Scorched Brown, giving a drybrush of Snakebite Leather for the darker sections and then a base of Khemri Brown with a drybrush of Dessert Yellow. I think this gave a much darker, "grim dark", model. Also, I finally got flesh right on Nork, the last (at that point) infantry,an in the army! Lol:

I also started having a think about some Dark Eldar, buying the Codex and having a read, as well as doing a not too shabby job of a Venom with some Bloodbrides on the wing positions:

Oops, sorry!! It's all the flicking back and forth from the photo app for the pic links-you can do everything with an iPad you can on a PC, but sometimes it's a pain in the back end, I'll finish in a oner, and hopefully you'll see that the bases have improved a touch recently! Lol

Well, that was the 2000pt list done, so I started thinking about Apocalypse, and what better place to start than the bits box and some green stuff?! Having converted my Hydras from Manticores and Aegis Lines I had some nice parts lying around for some static artillery:

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/d14409d2.jpg

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/d178cbae.jpg

Then some more gaming fun was had with my first Apocalypse game:

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/2c8b777c.jpg

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/2b4c6a16.jpg

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/6adf346f.jpg

As you can see from the final photo, I got owned! But Guard don't do well when the children in charge of the SM allies get bored in turn two and wander off, taking those nice 2+ saves on your flanks with them. But I did manage to single handedly shoot one of the turbo lasers off the Titan, which I was happy with!!! Lol

Having finally played a game of Apocalypse, I realised I need more infantry as well as armour, so I started putting together a Catachan Ambush Patrol formation, which consists of three Catachan Veteran Squads:

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/6ce55508.jpg

Which as you can see, don't look half bad in dessert colours! Also I've used some static grass on the bases, and by this point the new paints were out, so I got the rest of the army out, went over the bases again, and tried out some weathering techniques on the tanks while I waited for the first FW kit to arrive:

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/613edc7f.jpg

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/02994d4c.jpg

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/4ac39bb4.jpg

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/72ec4c39.jpg

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/b6744b6f.jpg

And then the first FW kit did arrive, a Valdor Tank Hunter. As soon as I saw the Malcadors on FW I fell in love with them. That combination of WW1 style tank, "historic grim dark" and model size just works, properly! Lol. I also bought some plasticard, some Milliput and some weathering powder to try and make this a special centre piece for the army.

    Before mud:

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/82c0d5e6.jpg

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/80decaba.jpg

    And with mud:

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/4591d3db.jpg

And that's the "blog" up to date. Some of my earlier models are looking a bit ropey, and might get a revisiting at a later date, but I think I've got the various colour blocks (flesh/Camo/metal/rust/dust/mud) all squared away, so while I've got the nack, I wanna get the super heavies squared away. Next up: Malcador Infernus, and the second Catachan Veterans squad, but with some MaxMini head swaps.

An awesome day for the Regiment today, in a bloodbath of a Jubilee Apocalypse game. Approx 7000 a side, Imperium Vs Chaos + Nids.

It was awesome to see the models on the table again, it really gave perspective to the overall state of the figures: more weathering powder required to bring the armour up to scratch.

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/236bf39c.jpg

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/04959ec7.jpg

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/afb63f60.jpg

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/45cf5122.jpg

The Valdor proved its worth in turn one. It poked its nose out from behind a building, obliterated one Chaos Dreadnaught with the Neutron Laser Projector, wrecked another with the Lascannon then made a dent in a Nid swarm with the Heavy Stubber, not bad shooting for Guard!

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/4043fe0d.jpg

Then over the course of four turns, pretty much everything died. It was deemed a narrow victory for the Imperium but kill points couldn't be totalled due to inconsiderate kids packing up before the last turn had finished. But it was carnage!

Thats it for the 3rd Cadian Desserts for a while as I'm away with work for a few weeks, but the next update should include a WIP on the next FW model and the second Catachan squad.

It never rains but it pours! Looks like both of my next projects have arrived!

Here are the Catachan with ANZAC hats:

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/33984714.jpg

Some of them are a little small I think for the scale, but they'll look good enough on the table top I think. The plasma gun is from a Cadian set, just with the arm snipped off to go onto the Catachan one.

Also, the Malcador Infurnus has arrived!! But, being a full resin kit, I best start the arduous, flash cutting, filing, cleaning and green stuffing it takes to get the kit up to the standard a kit should be out of the box!

    Nah, maxmini:

    http://www.maxmini.eu/store/index.php

They arrived in les than a week. The casting is good, but the scale is a little off, but as I'm painting them that's getting les and les of an issue. I think it's only off though, for these catachans, for cadians I think it would fit better as they're "skinnier" models if you know what I mean.

I've seen the commando beret heads on the table and they look pretty good, I've also bought the tommy helmet with gas mask ones for my next squad.

And they're done! The second veterans squad for the ambush patrol (I really should get around to naming all these squads and getting a bit "fluffy" with them).

I really like the way they've come out. The head swaps looked a little off to start with, because the necks were so skinny, and the Catachan models are so buff, it didn't really seem right, but once everything was painted, they seemed to go nicely.

I think the skin/camo cream has come out well again, as well as the scorch marks on the weapons (I wasn't to sure about it as I was doing it, but once it dried it looks quite good).

And on the down side: I'm so damn lazy!!! I really should get round to taking the mould lines off before I paint!

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/96ede7e5.jpg

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/225ae1a9.jpg

Does anyone know how to paint good blood splatter? I'd love to put smears of it on my sergeants blades etc. Hopefully, with that and the scorched effects, and the better skin tones, once I've finished all the Apocalypse formations I want to do, I can go back thorough the rest of the regiment and bring it all into line.

Finally back from sea and my next two projects are waiting for me: the infurnus and a truck load of Ogryns for an apocalypse formation.

I have 13 Ogryns from eBay, one of which is a very nice Rogue Trader era model, and two were brand new out of the box up to date models

But, I have 5 of these:

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/b70f5bef.jpg

Are they bone 'ead models? If so, how can I mod them into regulars? I was thinking of filing them down and green stuffing eye patches, caps, pirate hats (lol) over them at jaunty angles.

Or failing that, seeing as I've got one of the modern bone heads, buy another and have two squads of 7, just using those two modern ones as bone heads.

Looking forward to painting these, Ogryns always look good on the field!

    GGGRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!

I'm officially not happy with the GW paint conversion chart: Balor Brown is officially not Snakebite Leather, it's more like Dessert Yellow. Meaning the lighter areas of my camo scheme aren't hardly any lighter than the dark bit:

WIP (one with flash, one without):
    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/7da0bb59.jpg

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/eea92984.jpg

Overall it's not too bad, but it could be a lot better.

Also I can't find the damn wheels for the trailer anywhere so I'm gonna have to create something special from plasticard, green stuff and all the spare track links I've got lying around!

But it is a damn sexy looking tank, and I can't wait to see a Nid players face at the sight of that HUGE ass flamer! Lol

If you've not gotten your wheels, did they come in the package? Because if they didn't, contact Forgeworld and they'll help you out.

Looks OK so far, a few more layers to smooth out the paint and it'll look grand. Might want to think about an air-brush though, or check out some Army Painter coloured sprays.

This might sound weird, but, how do you mean, "smooth out"?

I'm being totally benign here, but I'll give you a heads up where my thinking is with this paint scheme:

I like to think of this army as more of a PDF, with the Vets squads as detachments of proper "trained strength" Guard.

The fluff for the Malcadors (my favourite GW/FW models) properly supports that. So what I've tried to do is make the model as dirty, dusty and "dragged out of a warehouse somewhere" as possible. I've done a base coat of Scorched Brown, with a dry brush of Snakebite Leather (ish, damn conversion chart!!!), then the lighter sections are a base coat of Kemhri Brown, with a dry brush of Dessert Yellow. I think this gives the model a nice battered feel. Do you think it needs a second dry brush?

I don't wanna carry on now, and miss a trick! Lol

What can I do with the sprays?

And yeah, the wheels did come but I've lost them somewhere, and as much I hate GW, I really like FW so don't want to be cheeky! I have got a nice triangular track pod in mind if I don't find them though.

EDIT: I've just given the darker area another dry brush, and looks much better, still "old", but much better coverage. The two different colours are basically the same now though, so that's a shame, buts looking good with the base coat of the bare metal on.

And tonight's WIP, once again with and without flash (I definitely find photographing models as hard, if not harder, than painting them!):

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/4f1d04ed.jpg

    http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...b/52969656.jpg

While the base scheme looks better than yesterday, the two tones seem to have swapped between light and dark, and I'm really not sure about them.

The metallics are coming along nicely, just some black wash and a highlight, before adding scorched effects and a few other details round the model before its weathering time!
