Re: A Beginners Painting Blog Update: 3rd Sept, First squad done
Thanks everyone.
Next Dimitri, I have some scouts.
Yup Belzebub, been playing/painting Since August 20th, so not even a month yet.
Ricky, I want to drill out the barrels, but I'm terrified of screwing up... But I guess that's what Green Stuff is for...
As for the highlighting, it's something I want to try, but need to look up how it is done and understand it a little more before I do it

Re: A Beginners Painting Blog Update: 3rd Sept, First squad done
Well the Sergeant looks great the flesh looks fine. That's a great first squad. I haven'ttried to drill out a barrel yet, but I have done other drilling/ pinning and some conversions. Make a little notch first, then stick the bit into your notch to help it from slipping. Juist a quick tip that has seemed to work well for me.
I played Eldar, then got rid of them. I play Chaos. I am working on an Imperial Guard army.

Grab yourself a pin-vice from GW. Nice little pieces of kit, and pretty save and easy to use.
Practice on a bit of sprue first to get the feel for it, then have a go on your guns - don't have to drill in too far to make it look good, don't fret.

Eh, your scouts'll probably look a sight better than mine.
Then again, I didn't put much effort into them, so.. *shrug*

I dunno. When I look at the Marines. They are simple to paint. When I look at the scouts and all their bits I get nervous... I'm going to Undercoat this afternoon and start this weekend I think ^_^Originally Posted by Dimitri

I found most of the marines harder to do, than the scouts..
Then again, I barely put any effort into those little buggers, so, that might have been why...
Hell, if you want to laugh, check out my blog-thingy... My first Marines weren't very... photogenic, let's say.

Re: A Beginners Painting Blog Update: 3rd Sept, First squad done
I just bought an assortment of 2nd hand figures from an Auction sight in NZ. All came at various stages of painting, from undercoated to fully painted. None of the painting is in my theme or even that good, so I'm going to strip the paint off them and start again. I've read that Brake Fluid or Over Cleaner are the way to go. Some of the models are slightly older style, but I think I can use them ^_^
List of what I bought (For a very cheap price):
2x Dreadnoughts
2x Librarians in power armor
1x Inquisitor in Terminator armor
2x Grey Nights in Terminator armor
2x Scouts with Sniper Rifles
1x Standard Bearer (Missing the horizontal pole)
5x Adeptus Arbites (Full squad, not sure if I'm gonna use them, but it was part of the deal ^_^)
All the models are metal. Got it all for $50 NZ Dollars so I'm not complaining about a little bit of prep work.
Scout painting starts tomorrow... (Not the snipers, my other squad.)

Again, very nice indeed, but do something with the bases...they aren't working in a coalmine, aren't they?

Re: A Beginners Painting Blog Update: 3rd Sept, First squad done
These are some great first models, Vent. You've definitely got a natural eye for this stuff, with this being your first squad. I'll definitely be watching your thread to see how the rest of your army comes out!
As far as highlighting goes, I usually just like to add some skull white to whatever base color I was using, and thin it with a little water. Then I drybrush the lighter shade onto the edges of the model. Don't worry if a little bit of the lighter color gets in the areas you want to keep the base color, you can always thin down some of the base color again and touch up later. I've found this works well for me at least, hope it helps!
Haha also I gotta say I'm pretty jealous of the deal you got! Wish I could find a lot of models like that for a good price! Also, you just gotta paint up those Arbites, even if just for the fun and experience of doing it!

Re: A Beginners Painting Blog Update: 3rd Sept, First squad done
Thanks for the tips guys. Scouts are progressing nicely. Totally screwed up my first face though. I think it's because I've used a different undercoating method so the colors aren't the same. I think I'm going to hold off putting in the eyes on these guys, until I get a little bit of practice. And to get this practice I'm in luck. Somebody was selling a copy of Necromunda, plus all their unpainted figures for a cheap price, so I bought them to practice the skin tones and faces of a variety of models.
In addition, today I was purchasing some things I think I need (and others that I know I don't but wanted anyway), and the owner gave me a Games Day Commander for free (Plus a Golden Demon Entry, but HA! to that...). Anyway, I thought this was quite decent of him, so now I have a commander to paint as well. Plus it's a limited figure which looks cool. I'm going to hold off a little while before painting him, but I thought I'd show it...

Re: A Beginners Painting Blog Update: 3rd Sept, First squad done
So I've decided to be creative (HA!) and try and make some masks for my scouts. (I don't like the idea of those poor little guys going out there without face protection) So my first play with green stuff was both bloody fiddly and exceptionally annoying. I've done two masks and one eye socket refit (Nothing worse than eye wounds).
The results? You can see for yourself, I thought it went so-so. I can see where I need to touch up with a little more GS (Especially when the image is blown up), but overall I think it's OK for my first attempt using it. Now yes I know I should play with GS before I paint, but I have some brush on primer, so I'm gonna try it this way. Worst comes to worst I hack off their heads and replace them... Anyway, here are the images two different models. One nearly finished painting wise, the other half way.

DSC03546 (1000 x 562).jpg[/attachment:1lbybb3e]
As you can see the masks are different styles, simply because they are bloody fiddly and I couldn't make them look uniform. I tried to model them around my Paintball mask. Little touch and go. Please be gentle with me...
EDIT: I also bought a drill today, so I will be drilling out the barrels when I get a chance. ^_^

Re: A Beginners Painting Blog Update: 3rd Sept, First squad done
The masks seems a little rough, but for a first attempt with GS I'd say they're good. We'll see once they're painted. And I like the scouts' paint jobs. I'm liking the blue + yellow grenade. Colorful!
I played Eldar, then got rid of them. I play Chaos. I am working on an Imperial Guard army.

Re: A Beginners Painting Blog Update: 3rd Sept, First squad done
Wowzerz. That's fantastic.
On a side note, what Arbites are those? They could be used as Scouts. Arbites are armed with shotguns or bolters, they wear light armour (caraprace armour IIRC). Pretty much what a scout does.
The painting is really really good.
I like the Commander model as well.

Ummm I think they are pretty old. They are in the bath of oven spray being nude'd up. I'll try and find a photo of them online...Originally Posted by Kayback

Squad of five. Champion, 3 shotguns and one grenade launcher. I was thinking they could be made into scouts as well. Infact I was thinking of taking off their heads and sticking them on my scouts, but with the masks that idea has past ^_^

Re: A Beginners Painting Blog Update: 3rd Sept, First squad done
Yeah, those are the ones I was thinking of. The G/L might give you some trouble, but I'm sure you can think of something to justify it or convert it into.
Still think they could be used as Scouts. Especially with your painting skillz.

Re: A Beginners Painting Blog Update: 3rd Sept, First squad done
Well, I've managed to finish my second Squad - The first of two scout squads. When you look at them nice and close they look pretty rough, and I've had a crappy time with the flesh, and haven't painted in eyes this time. I'm thinking of stripping their faces (Those you can see anyway) and starting again at a later date, but for now, with my meager beginning skills I'm (sort-of) OK with them. The bases are not finished yet either.... Obviously... But for a guy who hadn't even heard of Games Workshop a month ago, I'm just happy I have two squads done ^_^
001 (1000 x 562).jpg[/attachment:28v0x9uv]
Looking at the image you can see the masks I've made are still pretty rough. But they came out at a level I was happy with. Only one you cannot see properly is the guy on the right. You can only see the top of his eye plate... It only covers his right eye which is why he has to take such careful aim... Tomorrow I need to decide what to paint next... If you can see a buckle or a button I haven't painted silver let me know... I'm still finding them... ^_^

Re: A Beginners Painting Blog Updated: 12th Sept, Scouts done.
wow! you paint fast and you paint nice. your scouts look good except their pants. they look like half naked in the picture at a quick glance, maybe just because of the lighting. anyway, nice job. the paint job is very clean, tidy and precise. you really should get started to try some highlighting, i truly believe you can do that well.
ps. tell you something, i really want to buy a box set of scout because i love their camo, however, last time i visited the GW shop i bought a Ultramarine Command Squad box set. your well painted scout squad made me feel regreted and i am now struggling with the chapter banner.

Re: A Beginners Painting Blog Updated: 12th Sept, Scouts done.
Thanks Ricky. Now that you mention the pants I guess they are a little skin colored, but when you see them in RL they look OK. But for next time I'm going to go a a light green color for their undergarments. I saw the Command Squad Box as well, plus the Chapter Masters Box, but decided that they were a little beyond my current skill level. As for the Chapter Banner, you have real skills and I have total faith that what you do will look awesome.
The question now is what should I paint? I think a dreadnought might be fun, or the old school Grey knights and Inquisitor. Help me out here people, what should I paint next from my box of mystery (Also known as the Tupperware box that is currently filled with oven cleaner):
Dreadnoughts
Librarians in power armor
Inquisitor in Terminator armor
Grey Nights in Terminator armor
Scouts with Sniper Rifles
Standard Bearer
Adeptus Arbites
Squad of Marines

Wow the scouts look really good. The masks seem a little rough but they look alright. I really don't see much problem with the flesh, it looks fine to me. I'd say paint up the dreanoughts next. It'll give a welcome relief from painting humans, and you can try painting up some vehicles.
I played Eldar, then got rid of them. I play Chaos. I am working on an Imperial Guard army.
