Re: Painting Q and A
I don't have nearly enough cash for Citadel paints- what sort of off the shelf paints should I look for, and what type? Are these paints acrylic, or something else?

Re: Painting Q and A
Here's an odd one (maybe):
What are some of you painting guru's favorite brush sizes for various tasks? And are there any good tips on painting with the very small brushes? When I'm working with my smallest, for instance, I seem to have trouble with the very finest portions of the point folding over, as it were, rather than depositing paint -- is this a paint thickness issue?

Re: Painting Q and A
i use citadel, it is expensive to start off with but after you get the main paints after that you need a few paints here and there. any other ones will still cost a fair amount.Originally Posted by insomniacpyro

Re: Painting Q and A
personally, for fast painting i use the biggest brush i can get away with but thats for base coating only. for the rest i use a GW standard and GW detail brush. these two are some of the better brush sizes (can't help with other company sizes thoughOriginally Posted by Kaffis
) the standard holds a fair amount of paint and is a nice size for holding in my sausage fingered hand.
as regards to the folding point, that is more thatthe brush itself is a little screwed. if you put water on it (saliva works better) then pull it through a tissue turning it so it reforms a point then it regains the point, if it folds when water is applied then the brush is knackered and not alot can be done about it but it still can be used for other various things.

Re: Painting Q and A
I use those brushes with messed tips mainly to get paint from the pot onto my pallete. Means I can be a bit more liberal when I dip it in with out worry of ruining the brush much. At times, I've found one of my bent tips useful to paint along small edges though this may be a rare case of only me. I've learnt a while back that good care of your brushes go along way to not get them bent and such.

Re: Painting Q and A
To Paint your Biker like a Black Templar is fairly easy. Paint it the same way you paint your normal models.
A simple way is using edging to highlight the Black using a grey. Give them the white shoulder pads. Add some silver to the guns and then add the iconry. For the bike again Silver for the metal areas. Highlight the Armoured sections the same way for the model and add yellow to the light. You can then go for some extra touchs by adding scribbles of white on the armour sections as text to both the bike and the Rider.
Adding some touches of Red wont hurt either. Prehaps the weapons and the Riders eyes.

Re: Painting Q and A
really, there is no specific way to paint black templars or anything, in the end YOU are the one who needs to decide where to put the colours on the model. so it seems fitting that you figure out where to put the highlights and such.Originally Posted by wartyg
basicly, like your normal ones but you need to decide on how to paint the bike.

Re: Painting Q and A
A little hint to paint black armor:
Mix a little bit scorched brown to the black. The black will still dominate and the armor looks old and worn...
The rest is as usual: grey for the edges and so on....
Trust me looks great, 'eavy metal does it the same way.

Other then a steady hand, how would you suggest painting fine details? things like eyes, freehand decals, etc,

Re: Painting Q and A
a fine, well maintained brush, thinned paint and be very patient. i do freehands by trial and error. one freehand may take me many times of correction and adjustment. so be patient while doing eyes and freehands.Originally Posted by Durandal

Re: Painting Q and A
as ricky said, a fine brush and patience is the main key. i also find that splitting the task into smaller sections helps so you don't dishearten yourself with a large task. so for free hand, paint the rough lines for the free hand first, then flesh them out, then correct and major mistakes in shape then highlight and shade as you would normally and finish off by correcting mistakes.

Re: Painting Q and A
Alright; my intial annoance at it was due to GW sending me a fine detail brush with the bristles pre-flayed!! Lucky me! (Note for everyone else: a small dry brush is not a good substitute)

Re: Painting Q and A
how should i keep my bottles of Citadel paints from losing their water content and hardening up?
An Imperial Guard flak armour vest has only a 1/3 chance of stopping a lasgun shot. How pathetic, they can't even stop friendly fire most of the time!
