Guide for Members by Members!!!

__________________________________________________ ________________________________________________
FAQ collaboration
First of all, Subzero's (slightly edited) warning to newcomers:
Should you, the newcomer, choose freely to follow the examples given in the Wastes, its is under the express understanding that absolutely nobody will take the responsibility for your behavior, or lack thereof, in the General 40k forum, or in any other forum, whether in existence or yet to be devised, and that the consequence of your behavior, or lack thereof, may be a warning, or banning, issued to you by the administrator, Andy, or a moderator(s), Rachel, Mozric, Liam, Baragash or Enigmacookie is entirely, and fully, your own causing, and that no blame, may, or can, be placed upon any member that acts inappropriately regarding the rules, in the Chaos Wastes
The evolution of a forum member
Q: Hey! I'm new to the site! What should I do first?
A: Welcome! If you're completely new to the site, you should do 2 things first:- Read the rules. Seriously, do read them: [Forum Rules] [/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
- Introduce yourself to the members, in the [Introduce yourself] forum[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
Q: I want to make a post about something completely random!
A: Sure, sure. Just contain your randomness within the [Chaos Wastes]
The Chaos Wastes is NOT a free for all, though. There are rules.- No Flaming[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
- No Trolling[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
- No Racism[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
- No pornography[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
Q: I want to reply to a post with a picture in it.
A: Generally, it is better to leave the picture out when you quote, if the picture is on the same page of the thread. People will often understand which picture you're referring to. If the picture is on another page of the thread, and/or you're uncertain whether people will understand that you're referring to that picture, feel free to include the picture in your quote.
As a general rule, it is better to leave the picture out of your quote, though, as including it clutters up the thread.
Q: I have noticed that some members write stuff in different colours. Can I do that as well?
A: There are currently no regulations regarding the colour of your text, which means that you can use whatever colour you like. Pay in mind that some colours are difficult to read on a black background, though.
Examples of good colour choices would be:- this[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
- this[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
- and this[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
- this [/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
- this [/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
- and this[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
Pay in mind that some members will be aggravated nonetheless by the use of other colours than white.
Q: I'm not sure whether I'm allowed to post this or not....
A: If you're in doubt, you probably shouldn't post it. Ask an older member for advice, or better yet, ask a mod.
Q: I want to post some pictures! How do I do that?
A: There are 3 common alternatives when it comes to posting pictures:- Use an image hosting site, such as {Image Shack} or {Photobucket} [/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
- Use the inbuilt attachement uploader. You will find this beneath the "message body" box that appears when you start a thread, or replies to a thread. Just click 'Browse' to find the image which you wish to upload. Remember that this image must be a .jpg image to be directly displayed in your post. You're limited to 3 such attachments.[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
- Use the 40kforums file uploader. [File Uploader] With this you can upload several images. Pay in mind that this uploader only should be used for images displayed on this forum.[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
Q: My pictures are quite big....
A: No member likes having to scroll horizontally to view your images. If your image is too big to view normally on a normal screen (around 15"), you can:- Link to the image instead of directly displaying it. Use [url] around your image address instead of [img] [/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
- Resize the image, either using the built in image-resizer in your image hosting site, or by using a graphics program on your computer (such as MSPaint or {GIMP}[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
- Use the attachment engine below your post instead of the file uploader. If the image is too huge, the attachment engine will resize it, whereas the file uploader won't.[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
Q: Necroing, what is it and when should I do it?
A: To necro means to reply to an old thread. This will make it appear under "active topics" and should, mostly, be avoided. Necroing a topic just serves to confuse members, and will often aggravate some. You should under most circumstances avoid necroing, especially if you have nothing constructive to add to the thread. Some times it is better to necro than to start a new thread, though. Examples of this might be the threads: "Show yourself" , "What does the avatar above you say?" and the like. When contemplating whether to necro or to make a new thread, ask yourself:- Will this contribute to the thread?[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
- Will the opening poster, or any of the successive posters, have any interest in this reply?[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
- Is it better to post this reply here, than to make a new thread?[/*:m:3jzv7ji4]
Q: Someone just called me an (insert inflammatory word here). What should I do?
A: If you take offense by a post made by one of the members, you can 'Report' that member to the moderators.
You will find that each post has a small exclamation button (!). Click this to report the post.
Q: I saw a guy with a banner in his signature, I want one too!
A: Your signature is limited to 7 lines and 2 smileys. You can have an image in your signature so long as it follows [These Guidelines]
Q
o you have some sort of chat?
A: The forum has an unofficial IRC chat, which you can find here: {chat}
Q: I have a question regarding the general use of a forum....
A: Check out the [General Forum FAQ]
Q: I want to make links appear like this instead of this: http://40kforums.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=56215 How do I do that?
A: You need to read up on [BBCode]
Basically BBCode is a special implementation of HTML, that allow you to edit the style of your post to certain degrees. Such as writing in bold, italics or underlined.
General Warhammer Questions
Q: Hay! I'm new to this, what army should I choose?
A: I suggest you take a look at this splendid thread: [Choosing an Army]
Q: I do not have the codex, but I was wondering about the stats of....
A: Please get yourself the codex. It is not allowed to post any content copyrighted by Games Workshop on this forum.
Q: I have decided upon an army, and I want to make an army list!
A: Great! You can post your army list in the appropriate army list forum: [40k Army lists] [WHFB Army Lists]
Just make sure that you read the additional rules, regarding army lists, or your list will get deleted. Read them here: [Army List rules]
Q: Can I paint my Black Templars blue?
A: The general consent is: "Your army, your decision". But if you want to keep up with the established background, also known as fluff, you should try to follow the colours that are suggested in your codex. However, feel free to make up your own army and colour scheme.
Q: I have made my own chapter background...
A: Please consider current GW canon story background before posting to avoid potential inflammatory posts. Do not deliberately avoid the established consensus, eg. female Space Marines, unless you have a valid, reasonable argument. You should still be prepared for criticism, though. Remember: Most of the time, someone will know the fluff better than you. Don't argue unless you can back up your points with valid arguments and references - not just hearsay and hope
Q. I want to write my own Space Marine Chapter Fluff, what do you think of this draft?
A. Try reading this [most excellent guide] over at Bolter&Chainsword.
Q: I don't understand all the difficult words and abbreviations you're using!
A: You can find a list of abbreviations and their meanings here: [Definition of abbreviations and acronyms]
Q: I have some rules questions.....
A: Feel free to ask in the [General 40 forum]
However, do take a look at the official FAQ's first. {Games Workshop - Errata and FAQ}
Q: I have a minor question regarding some painting techniques. What should I do?
A: We have a thread dedicated to such questions, where some of our better painters gladly will give tips and tricks.
You can find it here: [Painting Q & A]
Q: I've written a story, and I want to get it published. What should I do?
A: First of all, you need to realise the harsh truth: Your story is probably not so good that it should/would get published. Either the basic storyline is way off the established story, or you simply don't write well enough. The second thing you need to keep in mind, is that Warhammer and Warhammer 40k is Games Workshops intellectual property. That means that if you write something about Space Marines, it belongs to them. So if you want to get anything published, it would have to be through The Black Library. Feel free to post your homemade story in the forums, though. Some people appreciate that.
Q: I have a question about the warhammer lore...
A: Search for it on [Lexicanum], before you make a thread about it. In most cases, people will only direct you there anyways.
Q: I want to ask a question related to a GW novel
A: Knock yourself out in the [40k Background] section, but please mark spoilers with the spoiler command.
[spoiler:3jzv7ji4][/spoiler:3jzv7ji4]Originally Posted by Baragash
Q: Inquisitor? I've heard something about that game, but I'm still unsure what it is...
A: A member wrote a brilliant FAQ for Inquisitor, which you can find here: [Inquisitor FAQ]

Re: FAQ collaboration
Add a note to the bit posting pictures about resizing them to avoid the Horizontal Scroll Bar of Doom?
I know that unless the thread is super-interesting, I leave as soon as I have to start mucking about to scroll left and right to read the text.
EDIT:
Good idea btw
Maybe something like:
I have a rules question....
Please also check the FAQs [40k link] [Fantasy link] to see if GW has resolved this.
When asking or answering rules questions, it is very helpful if page numbers can be included.
And something about necroing (ie don't do it unless raising a new point/adding to a discussion).
If a topic is in the wrong place or has been Necro'd use the report button, don't spam the topic.

Something about:
I have made my own chapter fluff
Please consider current GW canon fluff before posting to avoid potential inflammatory posts. Do not deliberately avoid the fluff, eg female Space Marines, unless you have a valid, reasonable argument - and still be prepared for crticism.

Proposing all instances of the word "fluff" and "fluffy" be replaced with STORY or BACKGROUND. I think lingo should be avoided.
Good luck with this undertaking though.
