Dread vs Ven Dread
I have a DA army. Is it worth the points to go from a normal dread to a ven dread? Everything is the same except for the slightly better WS and BS. I know a ven dread can go as deathwing and gets deathwing strike. But besides that is it worth it?

Re: Dread vs Ven Dread
Re-rolling the damage table dice is always handy, I don't currently have my codex on me, but if it was say less than 40 points i'd go for it.

Re: Dread vs Ven Dread
If, for some reason, you have 60 points to kill than go for it. The extra WS and BS is awesome on top of the re-roll to the damage chart.

Re: Dread vs Ven Dread
In my expereince the damage re-roll is worth the 60pts, my ven gave me 3 turns to escape from charge range from Gazkul (sp?) and 5 mega armoured nobs, just because of that re-roll.

Re: Dread vs Ven Dread
The trick is too REMEMBER that you have the re-roll.
I never used to use venerable because of the points. But I started using it in a few games and I kept forgetting he had a re-roll if I chose.
Its really great because if your opponent gets a lucky destroyed result then your dreadnaught gets a chance at a second life!
Also the extra BS is pretty good. Make sure you have at least 1 shooty weapon.

Re: Dread vs Ven Dread
I'm going to have to buck the trend and say I think Venerable Dreads really aren't worth it. Paying 60pts more is far too steep even though the bonuses are good. For example, for the cost of two Venerable Dreads I could instead get three normal Dreads, which are killier and just as resistant to damage.
If you really like the idea of them or only have room for one then they're great, but bang for buck I'd pick numbers any day in this case.

Re: Dread vs Ven Dread
I agree that 60pts is very steep. You should not really intend to make your dread venerable if you get my meaning.

Re: Dread vs Ven Dread
Putting venerable on a dread is something you should do as a last resort. Basically if you are happy with the list and satisfied that there is ntohing else you could take instead of venerable.
Heck, for 60 pts, I'd rather upgrade a Rhino to a razorback and take a MM attack bike.
Good judgement comes from experience, alot of that comes from bad judgement

Re: Dread vs Ven Dread
I really like dreads, I run three whenever I can, but I've never actually used venerable. I don't like anything to bo too expensive, except my assault squads and then it's mostly because I max them out and toss in a chaplain. It just seems to me that 60 points could be used better elsewhere, like almost 4 more marines in something like a dev squad for more ablative wounds or something of the like.
I have a chaplain dreadnought on order that I plan to use as venerable, so I'll put something better together here when I get a chance to use it, but until then I'd rather spend the points on more wounds.

Re: Dread vs Ven Dread
With a master of the forge, you can take 6 Dreads,
Always wanted to use a list like that. It'd piss a lot of people off (Especially since its legal,
) I'd use it for 1,500+ pts, though, seeing as thats 600 or so points wasted on 6 models. Either ways, it'd be fun to play a list with 6 dreads...

Re: Dread vs Ven Dread
60pts is pretty steep. And then 15pts for extra armour....
I like my black templar codex so I can get a venerable dread for only 20pts more. And take tank hunters....
